The Yamaha F60LB is constructed around a precision-engineered 996 cc
inline four-cylinder powerhead. The cylinder block is made from
high-strength, lightweight aluminum alloy, featuring Yamaha's
proprietary YDC-30 alloy combined with an exclusive Phaze Five
electro-deposited, anti-corrosive paint system that provides a tough,
five-layer barrier against corrosion.
The cylinder bore and stroke are configured at 65.0 mm and 75.0 mm
respectively. The cylinder head features a single overhead camshaft
(SOHC) operating eight valves via rocker arms, with two intake and two
exhaust valves per cylinder. This SOHC design provides a compact,
lightweight, space-saving design while the long stroke configuration
delivers ultra-smooth, usable power with low noise and vibration levels.
The composite intake manifold features long tube intake tracks that are
pulse-tuned to increase airflow, boosting low-end and midrange torque
for a more powerful hole shot and increased acceleration. All air
entering the engine block is routed through a large single throttle
valve, ensuring the precise amount of air necessary for optimum power
and fuel efficiency.
The SOHC valve train in the F60LB requires periodic valve clearance
inspection and adjustment to maintain optimal performance and quiet
operation. The intake valve clearance, measured with the engine cold, is
specified at 0.15-0.25 mm (0.006-0.010 in).
The exhaust valve clearance, which operates under higher thermal loads,
is set to 0.25-0.35 mm (0.010-0.014 in). The camshaft is driven by a
timing chain designed for durability, and the valve train components are
lubricated by pressurized oil from the wet sump system. The engine
incorporates an air silencer box and surge tank to reduce air intake
noise and air turbulence for smooth, quiet operation.
The F60LB employs a sophisticated Multi-Point Electronic Fuel Injection
(EFI) system with a large single throttle valve. This system injects the
right amount of fuel into the combustion chamber at the optimum timing,
taking into account engine speed and load requirements to achieve
maximum engine performance.
The air flow is precisely delivered to all four cylinders based on the
demands of the driver and combustion conditions, with the air
pulse-tuned before it reaches the injectors to promote a clean and
efficient burn for maximum economy and power. The EFI system delivers
the exact amount of fuel needed for optimum performance and efficiency
while optimizing fuel atomization to further enhance fuel economy.
The Prime Start system makes starting as easy as starting a car,
automatically controlling the engine warming up process and eliminating
the need for a conventional choke. The fuel system includes an external
Yamaha 10-Micron Fuel/Water Separating Filter for optimal filtration.
The engine operates on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane
rating of 87.
The Yamaha F60LB utilizes a wet sump lubrication system, where engine
oil is stored in an integrated oil pan at the base of the engine. A
pressurized oil delivery system incorporates a compact and durable oil
pump to keep all moving parts of the SOHC system lubricated and running
smoothly for maximum reliability. The system includes a full-flow oil
filter that removes contaminants from the oil.
The recommended oil is Yamalube 4M or a high-quality 4-stroke motor oil
meeting API SE, SF, SG, SH, SJ, or SL specifications, with SAE 10W-30 or
10W-40 suitable for most operating conditions. The engine oil capacity
is 2.1 liters (2.2 US quarts) with filter replacement, and 1.9 liters
(2.0 US quarts) without filter replacement. The oil drain plug is
torqued to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft), and the oil filter to 18 Nm (13.5 lb-ft).
Regular oil and filter changes are essential for engine longevity.
The cooling system is a raw-water, thermostatically controlled design. A
water pump, driven by the driveshaft, draws water from the body of water
through an inlet in the lower unit and circulates it through water
jackets in the cylinder block and cylinder head. The system is regulated
by a thermostat that maintains optimal operating temperature by
controlling water flow.
The F60LB features a convenient freshwater flushing device that allows
owners to easily connect a garden hose to flush the cooling system with
fresh water without running the engine, significantly reducing corrosion
and extending engine life. The cooling system works with the engine
warning system, which includes overheat protection that automatically
reduces maximum RPM to 2,000 if excessive temperature is detected.
| Mid Section and Lower Unit |
The mid section houses the driveshaft and exhaust passage, connecting
the powerhead to the lower unit. The lower unit contains the reduction
gearing and propulsion components. The gear ratio is 1.85:1, achieved
with a pinion gear and forward gear set of 24/13 teeth. This gear ratio
is standard for all-around performance, providing a balance of
acceleration and top-end speed.
The reduction gears are of the spiral bevel type, selected for their
strength and smooth, quiet operation. The clutch mechanism is a dog
clutch, providing positive engagement for shifting. Gear shift positions
are forward, neutral, and reverse. The propeller shaft is splined to
accept a wide range of propeller options. The lower unit housing
includes a magnetic drain plug that removes metal particles from the
gear oil to prevent gearcase damage.
The gear housing is filled with hypoid gear oil meeting API GL-4 SAE 90
specifications, with a total capacity of 0.43 liters (0.45 US quarts).
Regular inspection and periodic changing of the gear oil are necessary
to detect water ingress or wear particles.
The Yamaha F60LB is equipped with a power trim and tilt system, allowing
effortless adjustment of the engine angle relative to the boat transom
with push-button control. The system uses an electro-hydraulic pump and
dual hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower the engine. The trim angle
range extends from -4° (trimmed fully in, forcing the bow down for
planing) to +16° (trimmed out for optimal running attitude).
The negative trim settings allow for improved acceleration and the
ability to bring the boat onto the plane more quickly. The system also
provides a tilt-up angle of 69° for beaching, launching, trailering, or
shallow water operation. The power trim and tilt system is controlled by
rocker switches on the remote control, making adjustments quick, smooth
and easy across a wide trim range.
Selecting the correct propeller is essential for optimizing the
performance of the Yamaha F60LB. The engine is designed to operate
within its full throttle rpm range of 5,000-6,000 rpm, and the propeller
pitch must be chosen so that, with a normal boat load, the engine
reaches the upper half of this range at full throttle.
Yamaha offers a comprehensive range of genuine propellers for the F60LB.
