The Saab B207R is a 2.0-liter,
inline-four-cylinder, double overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve,
high-output turbocharged gasoline engine. It is the final and most
advanced evolution of the classic Saab B-engine family, developed
specifically for the second-generation (OG9-3) Saab 9-3 and the
facelifted 9-5 in the early to mid-2000s. The "R" suffix designates the
full-pressure turbo, high-performance variant.
This engine marks a significant modernization over earlier B2x4 engines,
featuring a lightweight aluminum block (replacing the traditional cast
iron), dual-scroll turbo technology for minimized lag, a variable intake
manifold, and the sophisticated Saab Trionic 8 engine management system
with ion-sensing knock control. The B207R delivers a refined yet potent
driving experience characterized by strong, linear torque, excellent
mid-range responsiveness, and a high degree of mechanical smoothness.
While it retains the fundamental design philosophy and turbocharged
character of its predecessors, its updated architecture focused on
reducing weight, improving efficiency, and meeting stricter emissions
standards. It is known as a reliable, tunable, and technologically
sophisticated powerplant that represents the pinnacle of Saab's
four-cylinder turbo lineage.

Construction: Cast aluminum alloy with a bedplate design. This is a
major departure from previous B-engines, significantly reducing weight
while maintaining rigidity. The deep-skirt block uses a separate
aluminum bedplate that houses the main bearing caps, creating a very
strong lower structure.
Cylinder Bores: Linerless aluminum with a proprietary plasma spray
coating. The cylinder walls are coated directly with a wear-resistant
material, eliminating traditional iron liners for further weight savings
and improved heat transfer.
Crankshaft: Forged steel, supported by five main bearings integrated
into the aluminum bedplate.
Main Bearings: Steel-backed, aluminum alloy shell bearings.

jets (squirters) that spray oil onto the underside of the pistons to
manage thermal load from turbocharging.
Connecting Rods: Forged steel, I-beam design.
Oil Pan: Cast aluminum, contributing to the structural rigidity of the
engine's lower end.
Balance Shafts: Not equipped. Vibration control is managed through
refined engine mounts and the inherent balance of the square (86mm x
86mm) bore/stroke design.
Construction: aluminum alloy, cross-flow design.
Valve Arrangement: Double Overhead Camshafts (DOHC), driven by a toothed
timing belt. Four valves per cylinder (16-valve total). Utilizes
hydraulic lash adjusters (HLAs).

adjusters (HLAs) within the followers. No periodic mechanical adjustment
is required.
Camshaft Drive: Toothed rubber timing belt with an automatic hydraulic
tensioner and idler pulleys.
Injection System: Sequential Multi-port Fuel Injection (MPFI) fully
controlled by the Trionic 8 system.
Engine Management: Saab Trionic 8. The final and most advanced iteration
of Saab's proprietary system, featuring a powerful 32-bit ECU. Its
hallmark is the ion-sensing knock detection system (Saab Direct
Ignition-SDI), which uses the spark plugs to monitor combustion in
real-time, allowing for precise, per-cylinder ignition timing adjustment
and optimal performance with a high safety margin.
Fuel Injectors: Electromagnetic, top-feed injectors.

systems.
Intake Manifold: Composite plastic design with a Variable Intake System
(VIS). Butterfly valves inside the manifold switch between long and
short runners to optimize torque across the RPM range.
Turbocharger: Mitsubishi TD04HL-19T dual-scroll turbocharger. The
dual-scroll design separates exhaust pulses from cylinders 1-4 and 2-3,
significantly improving turbo spool-up time and reducing lag. Features a
water-cooled center bearing.
Intercooler: Front-mounted air-to-air intercooler (FMIC).
Boost Control: Electronically controlled by the Trionic 8 ECU via a
solenoid valve, providing adaptive and precise boost management.

block.
Oil Cooler: Standard equipment. An engine oil cooler (oil-to-coolant) is
essential for managing oil temperature under sustained boost.
Turbocharger Lubrication: Dedicated oil feed and drain lines. The
water-cooled center housing reduces the risk of oil coking after
shutdown.
Oil Capacity (including filter and cooler): 5.8 liters (6.1 US quarts /
5.1 Imperial quarts).
Recommended Oil Grade: Mandatory: Full synthetic oil meeting ACEA
A3/B3/B4 specifications. The official Saab recommendation is SAE 0W-30
or 5W-30, meeting GM-LL-A-025 / Saab 6098M specification. Oil quality is
critical for turbo and engine longevity.
Operating Oil Pressure: At normal operating temperature: 300-500 kPa
(3.0-5.0 bar / 44-73 psi) at 2,000 rpm. Idle pressure should be above
100 kPa (1.0 bar / 14.5 psi).

turbocharged SDI engines. Gap: 0.7-0.8 mm (0.028-0.031 inches). Only use
Saab-approved plugs.
Knock Sensing: Trionic 8's ion gap sensing. This system uses the spark
plugs to "listen" to combustion, detecting pre-ignition and detonation
with extreme accuracy for per-cylinder timing adjustment. Emission
Controls: Comprehensive Euro 4 system including dual close-coupled
pre-catalytic converters (one per exhaust manifold runner), a main
underfloor catalytic converter, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), and
evaporative emissions (EVAP) system.
On-Board Diagnostics: Fully OBD-II compliant.
Length (from front of pulley to rear of block): 700 mm (27.6 inches).

inches).
Dry Weight (engine only, complete with turbo): 140-150 kg (309-331 lbs).
Engine Oil and Filter Change Interval: Critical. Every 15,000 km (9,300
miles) or 12 months under long-life servicing, using only specified full
synthetic 0W-30/5W-30 oil. For severe driving (short trips, frequent
boosting, hot climates), 10,000 km (6,200 mile) intervals are strongly
advised. Observe a 1-2 minute idle cooldown after hard driving before
shutdown.
Spark Plugs (SDI): Replace with specified iridium/platinum plugs every
60,000 km (37,000 miles).
Timing Belt and Components: Replace timing belt, hydraulic tensioner,
and all idler pulleys every 80,000 km (50,000 miles) or 5 years. Failure
causes catastrophic engine damage. Accessory Drive Belt (Serpentine):
Inspect every service. Replace every 80,000-100,000 km (50,000-62,000
miles). Coolant Replacement: Every 2 years or 40,000 km (24,850 miles).
Fuel Filter: Replace every 40,000 km (24,850 miles).
Air Filter: Replace every 30,000 km (18,600 miles) or as needed. PCV
System (Crankcase Ventilation): Essential. The updated PCV system (oil
separator, hoses, and valve) must be inspected and cleaned/replaced
every 60,000-80,000 km. Neglect leads to excessive crankcase pressure,
causing oil leaks (rear main seal, turbo seals) and potential engine
damage. Intercooler and Hoses: Inspect for leaks, cracks, or oil
accumulation. Ensure all clamps are tight.
Cylinder Head Bolts (M11): Torque-to-Yield (TTY). Must use new bolts.
Procedure: Step 1: Tighten all bolts in sequence to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
Step 2: Tighten all bolts an additional 90 deg (1/4 turn). Step 3: Wait
5 minutes. Step 4: Loosen all bolts completely. Step 5: Repeat Step 1
(25 Nm). Step 6: Tighten all bolts an additional 90 deg (1/4 turn)
again. Follow exact factory sequence.
Main Bearing Cap (Bedplate) Bolts: 50-55 Nm (37-41 lb-ft) + additional
60-degree turn.
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: 30-35 Nm (22-26 lb-ft) + additional 75-degree
turn. Use new bolts.
Flywheel to Crankshaft Bolts: 60-70 Nm (44-52 lb-ft) + 30-degree turn.

The Saab B207R engine was used in the second-generation Saab 9-3 and the
facelifted Saab 9-5 as the high-performance 2.0T option: Saab 9-3
(Second Generation, OG9-3) (2002-2003): Used in the initial high-output
9-3 2.0t (210 PS) models, typically in Vector or Aero trim levels in
early production years. It served as the top 2.0L engine before being
supplemented and eventually replaced by the 2.3L B235R in the Aero.
Saab 9-5 (Facelift, 2002-2005): Used in the 9-5 2.0t (210 PS) models.
This provided a sportier, more responsive alternative to the
lower-output 2.0t (150 PS) and the torque-focused 2.3t and 3.0t V6
engines. The B207R (210 PS, aluminum block) is distinct from the earlier
B207R (210 PS, iron block) used in some 9-5 models and the lower-output
B207E (185 PS) and B207L (150 PS) variants. Its application was specific
to certain model years and trims, representing the final and most
advanced 2.0L turbo engine fitted to the OG9-3 platform.
