The Volkswagen CFCA is a 2.0-liter,
four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, representing a core member of
the EA288 engine family. Designed as a successor to the EA189 units, it
was engineered to meet stringent Euro 5 and early Euro 6 emission
standards without selective catalytic reduction (SCR/AdBlue) in its
initial configuration. The engine employs advanced technologies
including a dual-loop exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, a
high-pressure common rail fuel system with piezoelectric injectors, and
a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT).
Noted for its strong low-end torque, fuel efficiency, and refinement,
the CFCA was widely deployed across the Volkswagen Group's
transverse-platform vehicles. However, its complex emission control
systems are prone to issues such as EGR valve clogging and diesel
particulate filter (DPF) regeneration problems, particularly under
short-trip, low-speed driving conditions, necessitating proactive and
informed maintenance for long-term reliability.
