The Mazda KF-ZE is a 2.0-liter, V6, dual
overhead camshaft (DOHC), 24-valve gasoline engine. It is part of
Mazda's esteemed "K-series" of V6 engines, developed during the 1990s as
a more compact and advanced successor to the older J-series V6. The "ZE"
suffix denotes the high-performance, Japanese domestic market (JDM)
variant, characterized by a higher compression ratio and more aggressive
camshaft profiles compared to the lower-output "DE" versions.
Notable for its smooth, free-revving nature and distinctive V6 exhaust
note, the KF-ZE was designed for longitudinal rear-wheel-drive and
all-wheel-drive applications in Mazda's sport sedans and coupes. It
features Mazda's proprietary Variable Inertia Charging System (VICS) on
the intake manifold for improved mid-range torque and an electronically
controlled throttle body. While not as powerful as the larger 2.5L
KL-ZE, it is revered for its mechanical refinement, linear power
delivery, and engineering sophistication, representing the peak of
Mazda's naturally aspirated V6 development in its era.
Engine Family / Model: Mazda K-series V6, Model KF-ZE.
Engine Type: 60-degree V6, longitudinal-mounted, four-stroke cycle,
water-cooled, naturally aspirated gasoline engine.

valve system inside the intake manifold that alters effective runner
length.
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated.

Fuel Requirement: Premium unleaded gasoline (100 RON in Japan, 95 RON
minimum elsewhere).
Construction: Cast aluminum alloy with sintered metal-impregnated,
cast-in-place iron cylinder liners. The 60-degree V-angle allows for
compact packaging and inherent primary balance.
Cylinder Bores: Permanent mold cast iron liners. Standard bore diameter
is 78.00 mm (3.071 inches).
Crankshaft: Forged steel crankshaft, supported by four main bearings.
Crankshaft pins are offset at 30-degree intervals.
Main Bearings: Steel-backed, aluminum alloy shell bearings.

dome-shaped crown to achieve the high compression ratio. Features three
rings (two compression, one oil control).
Connecting Rods: Forged steel, I-beam design.
Oil Pan: Cast aluminum structural oil pan, which adds significant
rigidity to the lower block assembly.
Construction: aluminum alloy, cross-flow design for each bank.
Valve Arrangement: Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) per bank (total of
four camshafts), driven by two timing belts (one per bank). Four valves
per cylinder (24-valve total).
Valve Configuration: Pent-roof combustion chambers.
Valve Springs: High-tension valve springs to accommodate high-RPM
operation.
Valve Diameter: Intake: 33.0 mm (1.299 inches). Exhaust: 28.5 mm (1.122

adjusted by replacing hardened shims located on top of the valve
buckets. Clearance (Cold): Intake: 0.17-0.23 mm (0.0067-0.0091 inches).
Exhaust: 0.22-0.28 mm (0.0087-0.0110 inches). Requires specialized tools
for adjustment.
Camshaft Drive: Two separate toothed rubber timing belts, each driving
one bank of cylinders. Each belt has an automatic hydraulic tensioner
and an idler pulley. Belt change is critical and labor-intensive.
Injection System: Sequential Multi-port Fuel Injection (MPFI).

Base pressure is 3.5 bar (51 psi) with vacuum line disconnected.
Throttle Body: Single-bore, cable-operated (drive-by-wire on very late
models). Diameter is 60 mm.
Intake Manifold: aluminum, dual-runner design incorporating the VICS
system. Butterflies inside the manifold open at a predetermined RPM
(around 4,500-5,000 rpm) to switch from long, high-velocity runners for
low-end torque to short, high-flow runners for high-RPM power.
Air Flow Meter: Vane-type (AFM) or later Hot-Wire type.
Type: Full-pressure, force-fed wet-sump system. Oil Pump: Internal gear
(trochoid) type, chain-driven from the crankshaft, located in the front
engine cover.

Oil Capacity (including filter): 4.8 liters (5.1 US quarts / 4.2
Imperial quarts).
Recommended Oil Grade: API SG/SH or later. Viscosity: SAE 5W-30 or
10W-30 for normal operation. High-quality synthetic or semi-synthetic
oil is recommended for its high-RPM capability.
Operating Oil Pressure: At operating temperature: 294-441 kPa (3.0-4.5
kgf/cm2 / 43-64 psi) at 3,000 rpm. Minimum idle pressure: 98 kPa (1.0
kgf/cm2 / 14 psi).

(one for each cylinder head coolant passage) for even warm-up and
temperature control.
Water Pump: Centrifugal, belt-driven from the crankshaft via a
serpentine/accessory belt.

The Mazda KF-ZE engine was exclusively used in Japanese Domestic Market
(JDM) vehicles and some limited non-US market models from the early to
mid-1990s: Mazda Cronos (JE Series): Also known as the Mazda 626 in some
markets, the Cronos was offered with the KF-ZE as the top-tier engine
option. Mazda Eunos 500 (Xedos 6): The luxury-oriented Eunos 500/Xedos 6
featured the KF-ZE as its performance engine choice.
Mazda MX-6 (GE Series): The second-generation MX-6, particularly the
Japanese-spec "Type S" or similar high-grade models, was available with
the KF-ZE. Ford Telstar (Japan/Australasia): The badge-engineered
version of the Mazda Cronos/626 in certain markets offered the KF-ZE.
Mazda Lantis (CB Series): The sporty Lantis coupe/hatchback (sold as the
323F/Lyra in Europe) in its highest "Type R" trim could be equipped with
the KF-ZE in some configurations, though the KL-ZE was more common.
