The Suzuki 1.6 DDiS (Diesel Direct injection
Suzuki) is a modern, 1.6-liter, inline-four-cylinder, dual overhead
camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve, turbocharged common-rail diesel engine. It is
the badge given to the Fiat-sourced 1.6 Multijet engine used in Suzuki
vehicles during the 2010s. This engine represents Suzuki's primary
modern diesel offering for compact passenger cars and SUVs, designed to
meet strict Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards while delivering strong
performance and excellent fuel economy.
Key features include a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT), a
high-pressure common-rail injection system with multiple injections per
cycle, and comprehensive after-treatment including a Diesel Particulate
Filter (DPF). In later Euro 6 iterations, it also incorporates Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR/AdBlue). The 1.6 DDiS is characterized by its
robust low-end and mid-range torque, making it well-suited for urban
driving and motorway cruising in vehicles like the SX4 S-Cross and
Vitara.
While offering good refinement for its class, it requires adherence to
specific maintenance routines, particularly concerning its emission
control systems. It is a competent, efficient, and modern workhorse
engine that served Suzuki's European diesel strategy.

The Suzuki 1.6 DDiS engine was exclusively used in the following Suzuki
models for the European and other diesel-oriented markets: Suzuki SX4
S-Cross (Second Generation, JY) (2013–2018): Offered as the diesel
option across various trim levels, often paired with ALLGRIP all-wheel
drive. Suzuki Vitara (Fourth Generation, LY) (2015–2018): The sole
diesel engine option for the new Vitara, available with manual or
automatic transmission and ALLGRIP.
This engine is a rebadged Fiat 1.6 16v Multijet. Its application in
Suzukis was a result of the strategic partnership between the two
companies. Suzuki did not develop its own modern small diesel, instead
sourcing this proven unit from Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT).
Production for Suzuki applications likely ceased by 2018-2019 as the
model range was updated and market demand for small diesel passenger
cars declined rapidly in Europe. It remains a key powerplant for these
specific model years.
