The Audi BBJ is a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder,
naturally aspirated gasoline engine, representing the first generation
of Audi's 3.0L 30-valve V6 powerplant. This engine is a member of the
Volkswagen Group's "BBJ/ASN" engine family and was developed as a
refined, torquey, and smooth-performing six-cylinder option for Audi's
mid-range and executive vehicles in the early 2000s.
It features an all-aluminum construction, dual overhead camshafts (DOHC)
per bank, five valves per cylinder, and a variable length intake
manifold. Utilizing multi-point fuel injection and a timing belt drive,
the BBJ prioritizes linear power delivery, mechanical refinement, and
robust durability over the high-revving character or forced induction of
more performance-oriented engines.
While not known for exceptional power output, it provides a substantial
torque reserve and a notably smooth operational character. Its design is
largely free of major systemic flaws, though its timing belt service is
critical and the five-valve head can be complex for major repairs. The
BBJ established a strong foundation for Audi's subsequent V6 engine
developments.

Head Construction: Dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) per bank, 30-valve
design (5 valves per cylinder: 3 intake, 2 exhaust). The camshafts are
driven by a single, central timing belt.
Valve Arrangement: Valves are arranged in a compact pent-roof combustion
chamber. They are actuated via bucket tappets with shims for manual
valve clearance adjustment. This is an interference engine. Variable
Valve Timing: None on the BBJ generation. The intake camshafts are
fixed.
Variable Intake Manifold: A two-stage intake manifold with switchable
flap valves optimizes low-end torque and high-end power. Valve

1.161 in. Exhaust: 30.5 mm / 1.201 in.
Injection Type: Sequential multi-port fuel injection (MPFI).
Engine Management: Bosch Motronic ME7.1 engine control unit.
Fuel Delivery: Dual electric in-tank fuel pumps supply constant pressure
to the fuel rail.
Fuel Rail and Injectors: Six solenoid-operated fuel injectors.
Throttle Body: Electronically controlled (drive-by-wire) throttle body.
Air Intake: Naturally aspirated via an air filter, mass air flow sensor,
and the variable geometry intake manifold.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a gear-type oil pump.
Oil Pump: Gear-type pump, driven by the crankshaft.
Oil Filter: Cartridge-type, mounted on the front lower section of the
engine block.
Oil Cooler: Engine oil cooler (oil-to-coolant) is standard equipment.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 6.5 L / 6.9 US qt.
Recommended Oil Grade: Full synthetic engine oil meeting VW oil standard
502 00. Viscosity: 5W-40 or 0W-40. Operating Oil Pressure: 2.0 bar at
hot idle, 3.0 - 4.0 bar at 2000 rpm. Imperial: 29 psi (idle), 44 - 58
psi (2000 rpm).

Water Pump: Centrifugal pump, driven by the timing belt.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, opening temperature 87°C (189°F).
Coolant Capacity: 9.0 L / 9.5 US qt (entire system).
Coolant Type: VW G12 (pink) or G12++ ethylene glycol-based antifreeze.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground. 120-amp alternator.
Ignition System: Distributorless ignition system (DIS) with three
dual-spark ignition coil packs.
Engine Management: Bosch Motronic ME7.1 as stated. The system uses a
hot-film mass air flow (MAF) sensor and two knock sensors (one per
bank).
Crankcase Ventilation: A closed Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)
system with an internal oil separator.
Overall Length: 550 mm / 21.7 in.
