The Audi AEB is a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder,
turbocharged gasoline engine, belonging to the first generation of the
Volkswagen Group's EA113 engine family. This engine represents a pivotal
advancement, being the first mass-production turbocharged direct
injection (TFSI) engine offered by Audi. It introduced the revolutionary
Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) system to the market in 2000, utilizing
a high-pressure fuel pump and direct injectors to spray fuel directly
into the combustion chamber for improved efficiency and power.
The AEB engine is characterized by its robust cast-iron block, aluminum
cylinder head with five valves per cylinder, and a relatively small K03
turbocharger. It delivers smooth power with minimal turbo lag, but its
pioneering direct injection system brought new maintenance challenges,
most notably severe carbon deposit buildup on intake valves due to the
absence of fuel wash over the ports. The AEB is a historically
significant engine that laid the groundwork for all subsequent
Volkswagen Group TFSI and TSI powerplants.

valves per cylinder: 3 intake, 2 exhaust). The camshafts are driven by a
single timing belt.
Valve Arrangement: The valves are arranged in a compact pent-roof
combustion chamber. They are actuated via bucket tappets with shims for
valve clearance adjustment. This is an interference engine.
Variable Valve Timing: The intake camshaft is equipped with a vane-type
adjuster (VVT) for variable valve timing. Valve Diameters: Intake

Exhaust: 30.5 mm / 1.201 in.
Injection Type: Direct fuel injection (Fuel Stratified Injection - FSI).
Fuel is injected at high pressure directly into the combustion chamber.
Engine Management: Bosch Motronic ME7.1. This system integrates control
of direct injection, ignition timing, turbocharger boost, and variable
valve timing.
Fuel Delivery: A camshaft-driven, single-piston high-pressure fuel pump
(HPFP) mounted on the cylinder head generates system pressure up to 120
bar. An in-tank electric lift pump supplies the HPFP. Fuel Rail and
Injectors: Common rail system with solenoid-controlled, side-mounted
direct injectors. Turbocharger: KKK K03 turbocharger with an integral
wastegate.

Oil Pump: Gear-type pump, driven by the crankshaft.
Oil Filter: Cartridge-type, mounted on the front of the engine block.
Oil Cooler: Not installed on this engine variant.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 4.3 L / 4.5 US qt.
Recommended Oil Grade: Full synthetic engine oil meeting VW oil standard
502 00. Viscosity: 5W-40 or 0W-40. Operating Oil Pressure: 2.0 bar at
hot idle, 3.5 - 4.5 bar at 2000 rpm. Imperial: 29 psi (idle), 51 - 65
psi (2000 rpm).
Type: Pressurized, dual-circuit system. A small auxiliary electric
coolant pump operates after engine shutdown to cool the turbocharger and
prevent heat soak.
Water Pump: Centrifugal pump, driven by the timing belt.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, opening temperature 87°C (189°F).
Coolant Capacity: 6.5 L / 6.9 US qt (entire system).
Coolant Type: VW G12 (pink) or G12++ ethylene glycol-based antifreeze.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground. 120-amp alternator.
Ignition System: Coil-on-plug (COP) individual ignition coils.
Engine Management: Bosch Motronic ME7.1 as stated. The system uses a
hot-film mass air flow (MAF) sensor and two knock sensors.
Crankcase Ventilation: A conventional Positive Crankcase Ventilation
(PCV) system.
Overall Length: 520 mm / 20.5 in.
Overall Width: 650 mm / 25.6 in.
Overall Height: 620 mm / 24.4 in.

intervals are 7,500 km or 6 months. Imperial: 9,300 miles / 4,700 miles.
Oil Filter Change: Every oil change. Fuel Filter Change: Integrated with
the in-tank fuel pump assembly; considered a lifetime component but may
require replacement at high mileage (e.g., 120,000 km / 75,000 miles).
Air Filter Change: Every 60,000 km (37,300 miles) or as inspected.
Timing Belt Replacement: This is an interference engine. Replace the

The Audi AEB 1.8T FSI engine was used in a limited number of Audi models
during the early 2000s as the pioneering application of this technology.
Audi A4 (B6, 2001-2005): A4 1.8T FSI (specific model years and markets,
primarily Europe). Audi A3 (8L, 2003-2004): A3 1.8T FSI (specific to
later 8L models before the switch to the EA113 2.0T FSI). The AEB code
is specific to this early 1.8T FSI unit. It was not widely used in North
American market vehicles, which largely received the port-injected 1.8T
(AMB, AWV, etc.) during this period. Production was limited as the
technology was quickly succeeded by the 2.0T FSI (BPY, etc.).
