General Technical Data
The John Deere 4024T is a turbocharged,
four-cylinder diesel engine engineered for agricultural, industrial, and
construction applications. This engine utilizes a mechanically governed
direct injection fuel system, providing robust and reliable power in a
compact design. Its liquid-cooled, cast-iron construction ensures
durability for continuous operation under load.
The integration of a turbocharger enhances torque output and performance
at altitude. Engineered with operator protection in mind, it includes
integrated safety shutdown systems. The 4024T delivers dependable power
for a range of equipment where mechanical simplicity and proven
performance are primary requirements.

automatic shutdown.
Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is a one-piece cast iron construction. It employs a rigid design to contain combustion pressures. Cylinder liners are replaceable, dry-type units manufactured from centrifugally cast iron. The block features five main bearing caps, also constructed from cast iron.
Main bearing caps are secured with two vertical bolts per cap. Internal oil galleries and coolant passages are cast into the block. The block casting includes integral mounting provisions for the turbocharger and other engine accessories.
Cylinder Head and Valves
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast iron component. It is secured to the block with a multi-bolt pattern. The head uses a direct injection configuration. It houses two valves per cylinder: one intake and one exhaust. Valve seats are induction hardened.
Valve guides are replaceable. Valve actuation is via pushrods and rocker arms from a single camshaft located within the cylinder block. The camshaft is gear-driven from the crankshaft. Valve stem seals control oil consumption.
Fuel System
The fuel system is a direct injection, mechanically governed system. A rotary-type injection pump, driven by the engine timing gears, delivers high-pressure fuel to individual injector lines. Unit injectors, one per cylinder, atomize fuel directly into the combustion chamber.
The system’s mechanical governor regulates fuel delivery to maintain the set engine speed under load. The fuel supply circuit includes a primary sediment filter with a water separator and a secondary spin-on fuel filter. A mechanical lift pump provides fuel supply from the tank.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, full-flow filtration design. A gear-type oil pump, driven from the front gear train, draws oil from the sump through a pickup tube and screen. Oil is pumped through a full-flow, replaceable spin-on oil filter. An oil cooler manages lubricant temperature.
Pressurized oil is delivered to the crankshaft main and connecting rod bearings, the camshaft bearings, the rocker arm shaft, and the turbocharger center bearing. A pressure sensor provides input for the low oil pressure shutdown system. Engine oil capacity is 5.7 liters (1.5 U.S. gallons). Oil must meet John Deere Plus-50 II or equivalent API CJ-4 specifications.
Cooling System
The engine uses a pressurized, forced-circulation liquid cooling system. A centrifugal water pump, belt-driven from the crankshaft, circulates coolant. Coolant flows through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and oil cooler. System temperature is regulated by a thermostatic valve. A temperature sensor provides input for the high coolant temperature shutdown system.
The system is designed for use with a radiator and fan. Coolant must be a 50/50 mixture of clean water and ethylene glycol antifreeze with a supplemental coolant additive (SCA). Total coolant capacity is 7.6 liters (2.0 U.S. gallons).
Other Systems
Starting System: A 12-volt electrical system with a solenoid-actuated
starter motor.
Charging System: A 12-volt alternator with an integrated voltage
regulator.
Air Intake System: Includes a dry-type air filter and ducting to the
turbocharger.
Exhaust System: Equipped with a turbocharger; exhaust gases drive the
turbine before exiting.
Engine Management: Mechanical governing with integrated electronic
sensors for safety shutdown protection.

Machinery Applications
The John Deere 4024T is engineered for compact agricultural and industrial machinery. A primary application is as the powerplant for John Deere 4120 and 4320 Compact Utility Tractors. The engine is used in small construction equipment such as compact track loaders, skid-steers, and vibratory rollers.
It serves as a prime mover for generator sets in the 20-30 kVA range and for hydraulic power units driving log splitters, air compressors, and irrigation pumps. Its combination of turbocharged performance, mechanical reliability, and integrated safety features makes it suitable for equipment operated in remote or demanding conditions.
