The Volkswagen CBFA is a North American market
variant of the ubiquitous 2.0-liter TSI engine, distinguished primarily
by its advanced emissions control system. As a member of the
first-generation EA888 family, it shares the core architecture of a
turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder with dual variable valve
timing.
The CBFA code specifically identifies engines equipped with a "Suction
Jet Pump" and secondary air injection, designed to meet stringent U.S.
emissions standards, particularly for Partial Zero Emission Vehicle
(PZEV) certification in certain states.
Delivering 200 Hp, it offers a strong torque curve and respectable
efficiency. However, it shares the characteristic maintenance concerns
of its EA888 siblings, including potential timing chain tensioner
failures, carbon intake valve deposits, and issues with the complex PCV
system, necessitating informed ownership.
Engine Type: Inline-4 cylinder, liquid-cooled, turbocharged and
intercooled, gasoline direct injection (TSI) with secondary air
injection.

93 AKI for optimal performance). Emission Certification: ULEV2 (Ultra
Low Emission Vehicle) and PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) for
specific applications.
Material: Cast aluminum alloy with centrifugally cast gray iron cylinder
liners.
Construction: Open-deck design. A rigid, reinforced aluminum ladder
frame (bedplate) bolts to the bottom of the block, housing the five main
bearing caps to create an exceptionally stiff lower crankcase assembly,
reducing vibration and noise.
Crankshaft: Forged steel, counterweighted, supported by five main
bearings. Main bearing journal diameter: 58.0 mm or 2.283 inches.
Crankpin journal diameter: 48.0 mm or 1.890 inches.
Pistons: aluminum alloy pistons with a dished crown optimized for direct
injection combustion. All pistons are cooled by dedicated oil jet
sprayers mounted in the block, which direct a stream of oil onto the
piston undersides. Connecting Rods: Forged steel, fracture-split big end
caps for precise bearing alignment. Connecting rod length is 154 mm.
Material: aluminum alloy with integrated camshaft bearing supports and
coolant galleries.
Head Construction: Dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve design.
Camshafts are driven by a timing chain located at the transmission end
of the engine.
Valve Arrangement: 4 valves per cylinder, actuated via roller-type
finger followers with integrated hydraulic lash adjusters, ensuring zero
valve clearance maintenance.
Variable Valve Timing: Volkswagen's TwinCam system utilizes vane-type
phasers on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The phasers are
controlled by the engine management system via oil pressure, allowing
continuous adjustment of valve timing for optimal power, efficiency, and
emissions.
Valve Diameters: Intake: 29.5 mm or 1.161 inches. Exhaust: 25.0 mm or
0.984 inches.
| Fuel System and Emissions |
Injection Type: Direct fuel injection (Fuel Stratified Injection-TSI).
Fuel is injected at high pressure directly into the combustion chamber.
Fuel Delivery: A camshaft-driven, single-piston high-pressure mechanical
fuel pump (HPFP) mounted on the cylinder head supplies the common fuel
rail. An in-tank electric lift pump provides feed pressure to the HPFP.
Fuel Rail and Injectors: Common rail system with solenoid-actuated,
side-mounted injectors. System pressure is variably controlled between
40 and 150 bar.
Turbocharger: A water-cooled BorgWarner K03 turbocharger is utilized.
The integrated exhaust manifold is cast into the cylinder head.
Intercooler: Air-to-air intercooler mounted in the front of the vehicle.
Secondary Air Injection (Unique to CBFA/Emissions Spec): An electric air
pump injects fresh air into the exhaust ports immediately after a cold
start. This promotes additional combustion of unburned hydrocarbons in
the exhaust manifold, rapidly heating the primary catalytic converter to
reduce cold-start emissions. Suction Jet Pump: Part of the evaporative
emissions (EVAP) system, it uses intake manifold vacuum to draw fuel
vapors from the charcoal canister.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a two-stage, switchable
volumetric oil pump.
Oil Pump: A vane-type, two-stage oil pump located in the oil pan and
driven by a chain from the crankshaft. It can operate in a low-pressure
mode (1.8 bar) for reduced friction during low-load operation and a
high-pressure mode (3.8 bar) under high engine load.
Oil Filter: Cartridge-type, mounted on the top front of the engine
cylinder head cover for easy service access. Oil Capacity (including
filter): 4.7 liters or 5.0 US quarts.
Recommended Oil Grade: Full synthetic engine oil meeting Volkswagen oil
standard 502 00 or the later 504 00/507 00 specification. Oil type is
5W-40 or 5W-30.
Operating Oil Pressure: 1.5-2.0 bar at hot idle, and 2.5-3.5 bar at 2000
rpm or 22-29 psi (idle), 36-51 psi (2000 rpm).
Type: Dual-circuit, pressurized cooling system. The main circuit cools
the engine. A separate, supplementary circuit with an electric pump
provides after-run cooling for the turbocharger after engine shutdown.
Water Pump: Serpentine belt-driven centrifugal pump.
Thermostat: A map-controlled thermostat, begins opening around 87°C
(189°F) and regulates temperature up to 105°C (221°F) under load for
efficiency.
Coolant Capacity: 6.5 liters or 6.9 US quarts.
Coolant Type: Mandatory use of Volkswagen/Audi G12++ (pink/purple) or
G13 coolant to prevent corrosion and scaling.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground. 140-amp alternator.
Ignition System: Individual coil-on-plug (COP) ignition with long-life
iridium spark plugs.
Engine Management: Bosch MED 9.7 or similar engine control unit.
Crankcase Ventilation: An integrated, multi-stage Positive Crankcase
Ventilation (PCV) system within the valve cover. A common failure point
leading to oil consumption, vacuum leaks, and rough idle.
Length (crankshaft pulley to flywheel): 500 mm or 19.7 inches.
Width (across cylinder head): 700 mm or 27.6 inches.
Height (oil pan to valve cover): 650 mm or 25.6 inches.
Dry Weight: 135-145 kg or 298-320 lbs.
Engine Oil Change Interval: Under standard service: 15,000 km or 12
months. Under flexible service (U.S.): up to 16,000 km (10,000 miles) or
12 months as determined by the vehicle's oil life monitor. Many
technicians recommend shorter 8,000 km (5,000 mile) intervals for
long-term health. Oil Filter Change: Every oil change. Air Filter
Change: Inspect every 30,000 km; replace as needed, every 60,000 km or
37,300 miles.
Fuel Filter: Integrated into the in-tank fuel pump module. Not a regular
service item unless diagnosed. Timing Chain System: The critical
maintenance item. The factory considers it "lifetime," but the
first-generation tensioner is prone to failure. Inspection for chain
stretch and proactive replacement of the tensioner with an updated
design is strongly recommended by 120,000 km (75,000 miles).
Spark Plug Replacement: Every 60,000 km (37,300 miles). Carbon Cleaning:
Due to direct injection, carbon deposits accumulate on intake valves.
Walnut shell blasting of the intake ports is required every
80,000-120,000 km (50,000-75,000 miles) to restore performance, fuel
economy, and idle quality.
Cylinder Head Bolts: Torque-to-yield (TTY), must be replaced. Procedure:
Step 1: 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Step 2: Additional 90-degree turn. Step 3:
Final 90-degree turn.
Main Bearing Bedplate Bolts: TTY. 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) + 90-degree turn.
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: TTY, always replace. 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) +
90-degree turn.
Spark Plugs: 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
Oil Drain Plug: 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
Oil Filter Housing Cap: 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
Camshaft Adjuster Bolt: TTY, one-time use. 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) + 90-degree
turn.
Wheel Bolts: 120 Nm (89 lb-ft).
