The powerhead of the Evinrude G2 250 features a 74-degree V6 block cast
from high-strength, corrosion-resistant materials. It is the first
two-stroke block specifically designed for direct fuel injection. The
cylinder bore measures 98 mm, and the piston stroke is 76 mm,
contributing to the engine's 210 cubic inch displacement. The engine
utilizes a loop-charged design with advanced direct fuel injection and
more efficient cylinders that contribute to the 15 percent reduction in
fuel consumption.
As a two-stroke engine, it utilizes a reed valve induction system with
no camshaft timing belts or valve clearance adjustments required,
eliminating components that require adjustment or replacement. The
powerhead is designed with a low-friction architecture that eliminates
submersed pump gears, belts, cams, oil scraping rings, and mechanical
oil pumps found in four-stroke competitors. The firing order is
1-2-3-4-5-6, with inductive discharge ignition controlled by the EMM.
The fuel system is centered around Evinrude's advanced E-TEC direct
injection technology with stratified low RPM combustion mode. The
PurePower Combustion technology provides 15 percent more fuel efficiency
than competitive outboards and delivers faster acceleration and more
stable RPMs. High-pressure fuel injectors, precisely controlled by the
EMM, deliver a finely atomized fuel spray directly into the combustion
chambers.
The system is designed to deliver up to 20 percent better torque than
all other engines in its class. The engine is designed to operate on
standard 87 octane unleaded gasoline (87 AKI in the US and Canada, 90
RON outside the US and Canada). The fuel system includes an inline
filter (P/N 357797) and a water-separating filter (P/N 502906). The
sealed fuel system design enhances safety and reduces evaporative
emissions.
Lubrication is managed by a sophisticated multi-point targeted oiling
system with EMM-controlled variable ratio. An electric oil pump draws
oil from the integral tank and injects it directly onto critical engine
components based on real-time engine speed and load demands. There is no
requirement to mix oil with fuel, as lubrication is a completely
separate system.
An on-engine oil tank with a capacity of 2 gallons (7.5 liters) is
standard , with additional accessory tank sizes available including 1.8
gallon (6.8 L), 3 gallon (11.3 L), and 10 gallon (37.85 L) tanks to suit
extended operation requirements. The recommended lubricant is Evinrude
XD-100 Direct Injection Oil, with Evinrude XD50 2-Stroke Oil also
acceptable. When operating in conditions below 32°F (0°C), Evinrude
XD100 oil must be used. The system eliminates the need for oil changes,
oil filters, and the disposal of used crankcase oil.
The cooling system is a pressure and temperature-controlled water-cooled
design. A high-capacity water pump circulates water through extensive
water jackets in the cylinder block and cylinder heads. The system uses
a two-stage design controlled by thermostats to maintain optimal
operating temperature across all engine speeds. Idle RPM in neutral is
500 ± 50, and idle RPM in gear is 500 ± 50.
Ignition timing is controlled by the outboard's EMM. The raw
water-cooled Engine Management Module ensures stable component
temperatures. The EMM continuously monitors engine temperature and will
activate the S.A.F.E. warning system to reduce RPM and protect the
engine if an overheat condition is detected. Warning signals are
controlled by the outboard's EMM.
| Mid Section and Lower Unit |
The mid-section represents a revolutionary design that integrates the
steering system and gears into the housing, protecting components from
exposure and creating a cleaner transom installation. The mid-section
houses the driveshaft and exhaust tube, connecting the powerhead to the
lower unit.
The lower unit features the sleek SLX gear case designed to accommodate
larger propellers than the previous generation, an effective solution
for larger boats. The gearcase utilizes a 1.85:1 reduction ratio.
Gearcase lubricant capacity for standard rotation models is 37.3 fl oz
(1103 ml) for the gearcase only, and 43 fl oz (1273 ml) including vent
hose and oil bottle.
Counter rotation models have a gearcase capacity of 39 fl oz (1154 ml)
and 44.7 fl oz (1324 ml) including vent hose and oil bottle. The
recommended lubricant is Evinrude HPF Pro Gearcase Lubricant. The
gearcase features a forward-neutral-reverse shifting mechanism.
Stainless steel components and multiple layers of anti-corrosive coating
provide extensive corrosion protection. The exhaust is routed through
the propeller hub.
The Evinrude G2 250 is equipped with Power Trim and Tilt as standard
equipment. The system includes a new automatic trim system (i-Trim®)
that automatically adjusts the trim for optimal performance and fuel
efficiency based on operating conditions. The trim range is -6 deg to
+15 deg, providing precise adjustment of the boat's running attitude.
The tilt range extends to 81 deg for all models, offering ample
clearance for beaching, launching, or trailering. Power trim and tilt
fluid capacity is 24 fl oz (710 ml). The recommended fluid is Power
Trim/Tilt Fluid, P/N 767969. The system includes a manual release valve
for emergency operation. The tilt-limiting system prevents over-tilting
of the motor.
Proper propeller selection is critical to allow the engine to operate
within its 5400-6000 RPM full-throttle range under normal load
conditions. The Evinrude G2 250 utilizes propellers designed for the
15-spline shaft configuration. The SLX gearcase is designed to
accommodate larger propellers than the previous generation, providing
improved performance for larger boats.
Right-hand propellers are considered standard rotation, rotating
clockwise when viewed from the rear to propel the boat forward. In
multiple outboard installations, counter-rotation propellers (left-hand)
are used on one engine to provide balanced steering torque. The specific
propeller selection depends on boat type, intended use, and load
conditions. The propeller nut must be torqued to 70 to 80 lb-ft for
secure installation.
