The Ford T1DA engine is a turbocharged diesel
engine identified by the internal Ford engine code T1DA. This code is
used by Ford for engine identification in production records, parts
catalogs, and service documentation rather than as a public engine
family name. Based on verified web sources and cross-referenced engine
listings, the T1DA engine corresponds to a 1.6 liter Ford TDCi diesel
power unit belonging to the Duratorq DV engine family. This engine
family was jointly developed by Ford and PSA and is widely used across
European Ford passenger vehicles.
The T1DA engine was designed to deliver strong low-speed torque, good
fuel economy, and compliance with Euro 5 emissions standards while
maintaining reasonable manufacturing cost and durability. The engine
uses common-rail direct diesel injection, turbocharging with
intercooling, and electronically controlled engine management. It is
intended primarily for compact and mid-size passenger cars operating in
mixed urban and highway driving conditions.
The Ford T1DA is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline four-cylinder
diesel engine operating on the Diesel cycle. The inline four-cylinder
configuration provides good balance characteristics and smooth operation
while allowing compact transverse installation in front-wheel-drive
vehicle platforms. The engine is mounted transversely and coupled to
either manual or automatic transmissions depending on vehicle
specification.
The engine architecture emphasizes durability and efficiency. High
compression ratios, robust internal components, and precise electronic
control of fuel injection and boost pressure allow the engine to produce
strong torque at low engine speeds while maintaining low fuel
consumption and controlled exhaust emissions.
Total engine displacement is 1560 cc, equivalent to about 95.2 cubic
inches. The cylinder bore measures 75.0 mm (2.95 inches), while the
piston stroke is 88.3 mm (3.48 inches), resulting in a long-stroke
configuration well suited to diesel combustion and torque production.
The compression ratio is 16.0:1. Maximum power output for the T1DA
engine is around 85 kW (115 Hp or 113 brake Hp) at about 3600
revolutions per minute. Peak torque output is 215 Nm (159 lb-ft) at
around 1750 revolutions per minute. Idle speed is electronically
controlled and set between 750 and 800 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The cylinder block is manufactured from high-strength cast iron to
withstand the high combustion pressures associated with diesel
operation. The block incorporates cast-in coolant jackets surrounding
each cylinder bore and integrated oil galleries for lubrication
distribution. The design prioritizes rigidity and long service life
under sustained load conditions.
The crankshaft is manufactured from forged steel and is supported by
five main bearings. Main bearing caps are secured using high-strength
bolts to maintain crankshaft alignment and stability. Thrust control is
provided by dedicated thrust bearing surfaces integrated into the center
main bearing.
Pistons are manufactured from aluminum alloy with reinforced crowns
designed to withstand high thermal and mechanical loads. Each piston is
fitted with two compression rings and one oil control ring. Piston
cooling oil jets located in the block direct pressurized oil toward the
underside of the piston crowns to reduce operating temperatures.
Connecting rods are forged steel units with fracture-split big ends for
precise bearing alignment.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy to promote
effective heat dissipation. It features a crossflow design with intake
ports on one side and exhaust ports on the opposite side. The head
incorporates two valves per cylinder, resulting in a total of eight
valves, which is for this engine generation and contributes to strong
low-speed airflow characteristics.
Valve actuation is handled by a single overhead camshaft operating the
valves through roller rocker arms. Hydraulic lash adjusters are used to
automatically maintain correct valve clearance, eliminating the need for
routine valve adjustment. The camshaft is driven by a toothed rubber
timing belt located at the front of the engine.
The timing belt also drives the high-pressure fuel pump and coolant
water pump. Correct belt tension is maintained by an automatic
tensioner. Replacement of the timing belt at the specified service
interval is critical to prevent severe engine damage.
The combustion chambers are formed partly in the piston crowns and
partly in the cylinder head, creating a re-entrant bowl design optimized
for common-rail diesel injection. This design promotes efficient air and
fuel mixing, stable combustion, and reduced particulate emissions. Glow
plugs are fitted in each cylinder to assist cold starting.
The Ford T1DA engine uses a high-pressure common-rail direct diesel
injection system. Fuel is supplied from the fuel tank by an electric
low-pressure pump and delivered to a mechanically driven high-pressure
fuel pump mounted on the engine. The high-pressure pump supplies fuel to
a common rail at pressures of up to approximately 1600 bar (about 23,200
psi).
Solenoid-type fuel injectors deliver precisely metered fuel directly
into each combustion chamber. Injection timing, duration, and pressure
are controlled electronically by the engine control module based on
sensor inputs including crankshaft position, camshaft position, boost
pressure, accelerator pedal position, intake air temperature, and
exhaust feedback. Recommended fuel is ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel
meeting European EN 590 specifications.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, wet-sump design. Engine oil
is drawn from the sump through a pickup strainer by a crankshaft-driven
oil pump. Pressurized oil is distributed through the main oil gallery to
the crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
turbocharger bearings, and valvetrain components.
A full-flow oil filter removes contaminants from the oil. An
oil-to-water heat exchanger is used to regulate oil temperature and
improve thermal stability under high load. Total engine oil capacity
with filter replacement is 3.8 liters (4.0 US quarts, 3.3 Imperial
quarts). Recommended engine oil viscosity is SAE 5W-30 meeting Ford
specification WSS-M2C913-D or later. The oil change interval is 20,000
km (12,000 miles) under normal service conditions.
The cooling system is a closed-loop, pressurized liquid cooling system.
A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the
engine block, cylinder head, radiator, heater core, EGR cooler, and
associated hoses. A wax-type thermostat regulates coolant flow and
begins opening at approximately 88C (190F).
Total coolant capacity is 6.2 liters (6.6 US quarts, 5.5 Imperial
quarts). Recommended coolant is a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol
antifreeze and deionized water meeting Ford coolant specifications.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The intake system consists of a panel-type air filter, intake ducting,
turbocharger compressor, intercooler, and an intake manifold designed to
promote efficient airflow. An electronically controlled exhaust gas
recirculation system is used to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The EGR
system includes an EGR cooler integrated into the cooling circuit.
The exhaust system includes an oxidation catalyst and, depending on
vehicle specification, a diesel particulate filter. Differential
pressure and temperature sensors monitor DPF operation. The system is
designed to meet Euro 5 emissions standards.
The engine operates on a 12-volt electrical system. Engine management is
handled by a dedicated electronic control module supplied by Ford or an
OEM partner. The control module processes data from numerous sensors and
controls fuel injection, boost pressure, EGR operation, idle speed, and
emissions-related functions.
Key sensors include crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position
sensor, mass air flow sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, intake
air temperature sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor, exhaust
temperature sensors, and fuel pressure sensors.
Boost pressure is supplied by a single exhaust-driven turbocharger
equipped with a variable geometry turbine. The variable vane mechanism
allows rapid boost response at low engine speeds while controlling boost
pressure at higher speeds. Charge air is cooled by an air-to-air
intercooler mounted at the front of the vehicle.
The turbocharging system is designed to provide a broad, flat torque
curve and improved fuel efficiency while maintaining acceptable exhaust
gas temperatures and component durability.
Approximate external engine dimensions are 650 mm (25.6 inches) in
length, 620 mm (24.4 inches) in width, and 700 mm (27.6 inches) in
height. Dry engine weight is 140 kg (309 lbs).
Routine maintenance includes regular engine oil and filter replacement,
inspection and replacement of the air filter, periodic replacement of
the fuel filter, and coolant replacement at the specified interval. Fuel
filter replacement is required every 40,000 km (25,000 miles). The
timing belt replacement interval is 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or 8
years, depending on market and service schedule.
The tightening torques are as follows. Cylinder head bolts are tightened
in multiple stages to a final torque of approximately 40 Nm (30 lb-ft),
followed by angle tightening as specified by Ford service procedures.
Main bearing cap bolts are tightened to approximately 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
Connecting rod bolts are tightened to approximately 30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
plus an angle. Injector hold-down bolts are tightened to approximately 7
Nm (5 lb-ft). The engine oil drain plug is tightened to approximately 30
Nm (22 lb-ft).
The Ford T1DA engine has been installed in the following vehicle
applications, listed in model and production year format.
Ford Focus Mk3 - 2011 to 2015
