The Volvo B200E is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder,
naturally aspirated gasoline engine, belonging to Volvo's celebrated
"red block" B200 engine family. This engine is a fuel-injected evolution
of the earlier B20 unit, designed to deliver improved performance, fuel
efficiency, and emissions compliance for Volvo's 700-series vehicles in
the 1980s. It employs Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical continuous fuel
injection, a high-compression V-type cylinder head, and a camshaft
profile optimized for torque.
The B200E is characterized by its legendary durability, smooth and
linear power delivery, and straightforward mechanical design. Its
cast-iron construction provides immense strength, contributing to its
reputation for achieving exceptionally high mileage with proper
maintenance. This engine powered Volvo's core rear-wheel-drive models
during its production run, embodying the brand's values of safety,
reliability, and practical performance. Its simplicity and robust nature
have also made it a popular platform for enthusiasts and tuners.

Fuel Requirement: Unleaded gasoline, 91 RON (87 AKI).
Emission Standards Compliance: US Federal and European standards of the
early to mid-1980s.
Material: Cast iron. This material defines the "red block" family,
offering exceptional strength, thermal stability, and wear resistance.
Construction: Deep-skirt design with five main bearing supports. The
block features substantial internal webbing and reinforcement. Main
bearing caps are secured with vertical bolts only.
Crankshaft: Forged steel crankshaft. Main bearing journal diameter: 64.0
mm / 2.520 in. Crankpin journal diameter: 54.0 mm / 2.126 in.
Pistons: Aluminum alloy pistons with a specific crown shape for the
10.3:1 compression ratio. Pistons use two compression rings and one oil
control ring.
Connecting Rods: Forged steel I-beam connecting rods.
Material: Cast iron. The head is a high-swirl V-type (Volvo) design.
Head Construction: Single overhead camshaft (SOHC), 8-valve design (2
valves per cylinder). The camshaft is driven by a duplex roller chain.
Valve Arrangement: Inline valves with a wedge-type combustion chamber.
Valves are actuated directly by the camshaft via solid lifters (tappets)
and rocker arms. Valve clearance is adjusted manually via screws on the
rocker arms. Variable Valve Timing: None.
Valve Diameters: Intake: 42.0 mm / 1.654 in. Exhaust: 36.0 mm / 1.417
in.
Injection Type: Bosch K-Jetronic (CIS) mechanical continuous fuel
injection. This is an analog, fuel-pressure-regulated system.
Fuel Delivery: A large electric fuel pump supplies fuel to the system's
primary pressure regulator and the fuel distributor. Fuel Distributor
and Injectors: A central fuel distributor meters continuous fuel flow to
four mechanical fuel injectors which spray into the intake ports.
Air Flow Sensor: A large, weighted air flow plate (sensor plate) in the
intake tract controls fuel distributor plunger position, regulating fuel
quantity based on air volume.
Auxiliary Air Valve: Provides additional air for cold starts to maintain
idle speed.
Throttle Body: Single-bore, cable-operated throttle body.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a gear-type oil pump.
Oil Pump: Gear-type pump, driven by the crankshaft via a short shaft and
gear.
Oil Filter: Full-flow, spin-on canister type.
Oil Cooler: Not standard equipment on this engine variant.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 3.8 L / 4.0 US qt.
Recommended Oil Grade: High-quality mineral or semi-synthetic engine oil
meeting API SF/CC or later. Viscosity: 15W-40 or 10W-40. Operating Oil
Pressure: 2.0-3.0 bar at hot idle, 3.5-4.5 bar at 2000 rpm. Imperial:
29-44 psi (idle), 51-65 psi (2000 rpm).
Type: Pressurized, single-circuit system.
Water Pump: Centrifugal pump, driven by the accessory V-belt.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, opening temperature 82°C (180°F) or 88°C
(190°F) depending on market.
Coolant Capacity: 8.5 L / 9.0 US qt (entire system).
Coolant Type: Ethylene glycol-based antifreeze.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground.
Ignition System: Bosch breakerless electronic ignition (EZK), featuring
a hall effect distributor and a separate ignition control unit.
Engine Management: No electronic engine control unit. Management is
split between the mechanical K-Jetronic fuel system and the separate EZK
ignition system.
Crankcase Ventilation: An open road-draft tube system (on earlier
models) or a closed Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system (on
later models).
0Overall Length: 620 mm / 24.4 in.
Overall Width: 650 mm / 25.6 in.
Overall Height: 680 mm / 26.8 in.
Dry Weight: 145 kg / 320 lbs.
Engine Oil Change Interval: Every 8,000 km or 6 months. Severe service
intervals are 4,000 km or 3 months. Imperial: 5,000 miles / 2,500 miles.
Oil Filter Change: Every oil change. Fuel Filter Change: Every 30,000 km
(18,600 miles). Critical for K-Jetronic system health. Air Filter
Change: Every 30,000 km or as inspected.
Timing Chain Service: The duplex roller chain is extremely durable.
Inspection for stretch and wear is recommended every 160,000 km (100,000
miles). The chain guides and tensioner may require service at high
mileage. Valve Clearance Adjustment: Required. Check and adjust (via
rocker arm screws) every 20,000 km (12,400 miles). Clearance (hot):

every 15,000 km (9,300 miles). Coolant Replacement: Every 2 years.
K-Jetronic System Service: The fuel distributor and control pressure
regulator may require periodic cleaning and calibration. System pressure
should be verified during major services.
