The Opel A18XER is a 1.8-liter,
inline-four-cylinder, double overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve,
naturally aspirated gasoline engine. It is a member of GM's global
"Family 1" or "Ecotec" engine series, representing a more powerful and
refined evolution of the 1.6L and 1.4L variants. The "XER" suffix
indicates it is equipped with dual continuous variable valve timing
(Dual CVVT) on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. This engine was
designed to provide a balance of performance, efficiency, and smoothness
for compact and mid-size vehicles in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
It features advanced technologies such as a variable displacement oil
pump, a linerless aluminum block with a rigid aluminum bedplate, and
electronic throttle control. The A18XER is characterized by its linear
power delivery, strong mid-range torque, and high level of refinement,
with low noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). While not a high-revving
sports engine, it offers a confident and responsive driving experience
suitable for a wide range of conditions, from urban commuting to
motorway cruising. It is known for its reliability and compliance with
stringent Euro 5 emission standards.

Valve Arrangement: Double Overhead Camshafts (DOHC), driven by a silent,
maintenance-free timing chain. Four valves per cylinder (16-valve
total).
Valve Technology: Dual Continuous Variable Valve Timing (Dual CVVT).
Hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled phasers on both
camshafts allow for a wide and independent adjustment of intake and
exhaust timing. This optimizes valve overlap for optimal performance,
fuel economy, and emissions across the entire operating range.
Valve Configuration: Pent-roof combustion chamber designed for high
tumble and swirl.
Valve Springs: Single coil springs with damper.
Valve Diameter: Intake: 32.0 mm (1.260 inches). Exhaust: 27.5 mm (1.083
inches).

not feature the Twinport system used on smaller Family 1 engines, as the
dual VVT provides sufficient low-end torque and efficiency.
Type: Full-pressure, force-fed wet-sump system with a focus on
efficiency.
Oil Pump: Two-stage variable displacement vane-type oil pump,
chain-driven from the crankshaft. This advanced pump adjusts its
displacement and pressure based on engine speed and load, minimizing
parasitic drag and improving fuel economy by up to 1-2%.

Imperial quarts). Always check specific vehicle manual. Recommended Oil
Grade: Mandatory: Oil meeting GM specification dexos2 (formerly
GM-LL-A-025). Viscosity: SAE 5W-30 full synthetic is required. This is
critical for the longevity of the dual VVT phasers, the variable oil
pump, and to achieve the long service intervals.
Operating Oil Pressure: The variable pump maintains optimal pressure.
The operating range: 150-350 kPa (1.5-3.5 bar / 22-51 psi) depending on
load and RPM.
