The Mazda FS-DE is a 2.0-liter,
inline-four-cylinder, dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve gasoline
engine. It is the high-performance, naturally aspirated variant of
Mazda's FS engine family, which was developed in partnership with Ford
(where it is known as the Duratec MA). Produced from the late 1990s
through the 2000s, the FS-DE was engineered to provide a balance of
power, smoothness, and reliability for Mazda's sportier models.
It is most famous for its application in the
first-generation Mazdaspeed Protege, where it was tuned to produce a
class-leading specific output for its time. The engine features Mazda's
Variable Intake Valve Timing (VVT) system on the intake camshaft, a
coil-on-plug ignition system, and a structural aluminum oil pan for
rigidity. While generally robust, some variants (notably the Mazdaspeed
version) are known for susceptibility to pre-ignition under high load if
not properly maintained. Overall, the FS-DE is regarded as a responsive,
free-revving engine that formed the performance heart of many popular
Mazda vehicles.

The Mazda FS-DE engine was used in a wide range of Mazda (and some Ford)
models globally from 1998 to 2006: Mazda Protege / 323 (BJ Series):
Standard engine in higher trim levels (e.g., Protege ES, LX). The
performance flagship was the Mazdaspeed Protege (2003-2003.5), which
featured a turbocharged FS-DET in some markets, but in the US, the
"Mazdaspeed" model used a specially tuned, high-compression naturally
aspirated FS-DE.
Mazda Familia / 323 (BJ Series, Japan): Sold as the "Familia Sport20"
and other high-grade models. Mazda 626 (GF/GW Series): Base engine
option in many markets. Ford Probe (2nd Gen, North America): As the base
2.0L engine. Ford Escort (North America, late 1990s): In ZX2 S/R models.
Ford Cougar (Europe): Base engine option. Mazda MX-6 (2nd Gen): Base
engine option. Ford Focus (1st Gen, North America): Used in the
2000-2004 ZX3, ZX5, and sedan models as the base 2.0L Zetec engine
(Duratec 20). This is a closely related variant.
