The Suzuki 1.9 DDiS is a modern, four-cylinder,
turbocharged diesel engine designed for light commercial and passenger
vehicle use. It represents a significant step for Suzuki in offering
competitive diesel technology, focusing on a balance of good fuel
economy, acceptable refinement for its class, and reliable performance.
Notably, it is a licensed variant of the widely-used Renault/Nissan F9Q
engine, renowned for its robustness and serviceability.
The engine employs a direct injection fuel system with a
distributor-type injection pump, an intercooler for charge air cooling,
and features a cast-iron block with an aluminum cylinder head. While not
a high-performance unit, it delivers a flat torque curve ideal for urban
driving and light load carrying, making it well-suited for vehicles like
the Suzuki Grand Vitara / Escudo and the Suzuki APV. Its design
prioritizes mechanical simplicity and durability over cutting-edge
efficiency or emission standards of later generations.
Engine Type: Inline-4 cylinder, liquid-cooled, turbocharged with
intercooler (direct injection diesel).
Displacement: 1870 cc. 1.87 liters or 114.1 cubic inches.
Bore x Stroke: 80.0 x 93.0 mm or 3.15 x 3.66 inches.
Compression Ratio: 17.5:1. Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Direction of Rotation: Clockwise (viewed from the front/flywheel end).
Maximum Power Output: 95 kW at 3750 rpm (rpm) or 127 Hp at 3750 rpm.
Maximum Torque Output: 300 Nm at 2000-2500 rpm or 221 lb-ft at 2000-2500
rpm.
Emission Standards Compliance: Originally designed to meet Euro 3 and
Euro 4 standards, depending on application and model year.
Material: Cast iron. Construction: Deep-skirt design for rigidity,
integrating the upper half of the crankcase. Cylinder bores are machined
directly into the iron casting (not sleeved).
Crankshaft: Forged steel, supported by five main bearings. Main bearing
journal diameter: 60.0 mm or 2.362 inches. Crankpin journal diameter:
52.0 mm or 2.047 inches.
Pistons: aluminum alloy with a recessed crown (bowl) to shape the
combustion chamber for optimal swirl. Typically equipped with three
piston rings (two compression, one oil control).
Connecting Rods: Forged steel, fracture-split big end caps for precise
assembly. Big end bearing journal diameter matches crankpin (52.0 mm /
2.047 in).
Material: aluminum alloy with integrated camshaft bearings and coolant
passages.
Head Construction: Overhead camshaft (OHC) design, driven by a timing
belt. Crossflow design with intake and exhaust manifolds on opposite
sides.
Valve Arrangement: 4 valves per cylinder (16 valves total), operated by
the camshaft via followers (tappets) and rocker arms. Valve clearance is
adjusted using shims located on top of the followers.
Valve Diameters: Intake: 29.5 mm or 1.161 inches. Exhaust: 26.0 mm or
1.024 inches.
Camshaft: Driven by a toothed timing belt. Material is chilled cast
iron.
Injection Type: Direct injection (DI) into the combustion chamber.
Injection Pump: Bosch VP44 or similar distributor-type rotary pump with
electronic control. The pump is driven from the engine's timing belt
system. It generates the high pressure required for injection and
distributes fuel to each injector in firing order sequence.
Fuel Injectors: Mechanical injectors with nozzles opening at a specific
pressure. Injection timing and quantity are controlled by the injection
pump's electronic control unit (ECU).
Governor: Electronic governor integrated into the pump ECU, managing
idle speed and maximum rpm.
Turbocharger and Intercooler: Single turbocharger (e.g., Garrett GT15
variant) providing forced induction. An air-to-air intercooler (located
in front of the radiator) cools the compressed intake air, increasing
its density for better combustion efficiency and power.
Glow Plugs: Quick-start ceramic glow plugs for cold starting assistance,
managed by a dedicated glow plug control module/relay.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a gear-type oil pump.
Oil Pump: Driven by a chain from the crankshaft.
Oil Filter: Full-flow, spin-on type cartridge filter.
Oil Cooler: Optional/application-dependent, an oil-to-coolant heat
exchanger.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 5.5 liters or 5.82 US quarts / 4.83
Imperial quarts.
Recommended Oil Grade: High-performance diesel engine oil meeting ACEA
B3/B4 or API CF-4/CG-4 specifications. Viscosity is 5W-30 or 5W-40 for
wide temperature range operation.
Operating Oil Pressure: 3.5-4.5 bar at normal operating temperature and
speed (2000+ rpm) or 51-65 psi.
Type: Pressurized, forced circulation with a centrifugal water pump and
thermostat.
Water Pump: Belt-driven (accessory drive belt) impeller type.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, begins opening at 82 C (180 F), fully open
by about 95 C (203 F).
Radiator: aluminum core with plastic side tanks.
Coolant Capacity: 7.5 liters (entire system) or 7.93 US quarts / 6.60
Imperial quarts.
Coolant Type: Ethylene glycol-based antifreeze mixture (50/50 mix with
deionized water).
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground. Starter motor is 1.4 kW or
2.0 kW depending on application. Alternator output is 80-120 Amps.
Intake System: Includes a panel-type air filter, turbocharger compressor
inlet, intercooler piping, and an intake manifold. Exhaust System:
Cast-iron exhaust manifold feeding the turbocharger turbine. Downstream,
a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and muffler are fitted. Some later
applications may include an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system for
NOx reduction.
Overall Length (without flywheel): 650 mm or 25.6 inches.
Overall Width (across cylinder head): 650 mm or 25.6 inches.
Overall Height (to top of valve cover): 700 mm or 27.6 inches.
Dry Weight: 160-175 kg or 353-386 lbs.
Engine Oil Change Interval: Under normal conditions, every 10,000-15,000
km or 12 months. Severe service: 5,000-7,500 km or 6 months or Normal:
