The Volvo B204FT is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder,
turbocharged and intercooled gasoline engine, representing a significant
technological advancement within Volvo's "red block" engine family. This
engine marks the transition from the traditional single overhead
camshaft (SOHC) 8-valve design to a more modern dual overhead camshaft
(DOHC) 16-valve architecture, while retaining the legendary cast-iron
block for strength.
Developed for the 940 and 960 series in the early 1990s, it combines
forced induction with multi-valve technology for improved airflow and
efficiency. The B204FT utilizes a Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger, a large
air-to-air intercooler, Bosch LH-Jetronic 3.2 electronic fuel injection,
and a low-compression aluminum cylinder head. This configuration
delivers a strong, broad torque curve and higher specific output than
earlier turbo red blocks.
The engine balances increased performance with the inherent durability
of its lineage, though its added complexity with twin camshafts and 16
valves introduces new service considerations compared to its 8-valve
predecessors. It stands as the most advanced and powerful four-cylinder
red block engine Volvo produced for passenger vehicles.
Engine Type: Inline-4 cylinder, longitudinal-mounted, liquid-cooled,
turbocharged and intercooled, gasoline multi-point fuel injection
(MPFI).

Material: Cast iron. The block is from the revised "B204" red block
series, featuring an 89mm bore (vs. 96mm on B230).
Construction: Deep-skirt design with five main bearing supports. The
block maintains the classic red block robustness with reinforced webbing
to handle turbocharging stresses.
Crankshaft: Forged steel crankshaft. Main bearing journal diameter: 64.0
mm / 2.520 in. Crankpin journal diameter: 54.0 mm / 2.126 in.
Pistons: Aluminum alloy pistons with a dished crown designed for the
8.2:1 compression ratio. Pistons are oil-jet cooled. Connecting Rods:
Forged steel I-beam connecting rods.
Material: Aluminum alloy. This is a significant change from the
cast-iron heads used on earlier red blocks. Head Construction: Dual
overhead camshafts (DOHC), 16-valve design (4 valves per cylinder). The
camshafts are driven by a single, reinforced timing belt.
Valve Arrangement: Valves are arranged in a cross-flow, pent-roof
combustion chamber. They are actuated via bucket tappets with shims for
manual valve clearance adjustment. This is an interference engine.
Variable Valve Timing: None.
Valve Diameters: Intake: 31.0 mm / 1.220 in. Exhaust: 27.5 mm / 1.083
in.
Injection Type: Bosch LH-Jetronic 3.2 multipoint fuel injection (MPFI).
This is an electronic, speed-density system using a manifold absolute
pressure (MAP) sensor and an air temperature sensor.
Engine Management: Bosch ECU (EZK 162/163 ignition system integrated
with LH fuel control).
Fuel Delivery: A high-pressure electric in-tank fuel pump supplies the
fuel rail.
Fuel Rail and Injectors: Four electronic fuel injectors.
Turbocharger: Mitsubishi TD04-13C turbocharger with an internal
wastegate. The turbocharger is oil-cooled only. Intercooler: Large,
front-mounted air-to-air intercooler.
Boost Control: A vacuum-operated wastegate actuator regulates maximum
boost pressure to approximately 0.6 bar (8.7 psi). An overboost function
provides a temporary increase.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a gear-type oil pump.
Includes an oil cooler.
Oil Pump: Gear-type pump, driven by the crankshaft.
Oil Filter: Full-flow, spin-on canister type.
Oil Cooler: Engine oil cooler (oil-to-coolant) is standard equipment.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 5.0 L / 5.3 US qt.
Recommended Oil Grade: High-quality semi-synthetic or full synthetic
engine oil meeting API SG/SH or later. Viscosity: 10W-40 or 15W-40.
Operating Oil Pressure: 2.0 bar at hot idle, 4.0 - 5.0 bar at 2000 rpm.
Imperial: 29 psi (idle), 58 - 73 psi (2000 rpm).
Type: Pressurized, single-circuit system with a separate expansion tank.
Water Pump: Centrifugal pump, driven by the timing belt.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, opening temperature 88°C (190°F).
Coolant Capacity: 8.5 L / 9.0 US qt (entire system).
Coolant Type: Ethylene glycol-based antifreeze.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground.
Ignition System: Bosch EZK 162/163 electronic distributor-based
ignition, integrated with the fuel injection ECU. The system uses a
knock sensor for timing retard under detonation.
Engine Management: Combined Bosch LH-Jetronic 3.2 (fuel) and EZK 162/163
(ignition) systems.
Crankcase Ventilation: Closed Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)
system with an oil separator.
Vacuum System: A network of vacuum lines controls the wastegate
actuator, brake booster, and various engine controls.
0Overall Length: 630 mm / 24.8 in.
Overall Width: 660 mm / 26.0 in.
Overall Height: 700 mm / 27.6 in.
Dry Weight: 155 kg / 342 lbs.
