The Ford SEBA engine is a naturally aspirated
petrol engine identified by the internal Ford engine code SEBA. This
designation is used by Ford primarily for engine identification within
parts catalogs, service documentation, and vehicle production records,
rather than as a public-facing engine family name. Mechanically, the
SEBA engine belongs to the Ford Duratec HE (High Efficiency) engine
family, also known internally as the MI4 platform. This engine family
was developed for mid-size passenger vehicles with an emphasis on smooth
operation, moderate performance, emissions compliance, and long-term
reliability.
The SEBA engine represents the 2.3-liter displacement variant within the
Duratec HE lineup. It is designed to provide a balance between power
output and everyday usability, offering sufficient torque for
comfortable driving while maintaining acceptable fuel consumption. The
engine uses conventional multi-point fuel injection, variable camshaft
timing on the intake side, and a robust mechanical layout proven across
multiple Ford models and markets. Its naturally aspirated configuration
avoids the added complexity of forced induction systems, contributing to
predictable performance and reduced maintenance requirements.
The Ford SEBA is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline four-cylinder
gasoline engine operating on the Otto cycle. The inline-four layout
provides good inherent balance, smooth running characteristics, and
efficient packaging for transverse installation in front-wheel-drive
vehicles. The engine is mounted transversely and coupled to a manual or
automatic transmission depending on application.
The design philosophy of the SEBA engine prioritizes mechanical
simplicity, durability, and serviceability. Electronic engine management
is employed to precisely control fuel delivery, ignition timing, and
emissions systems, ensuring compliance with applicable emissions
standards while maintaining drivability under a wide range of operating
conditions.
Total engine displacement is 2261 cc, equivalent to about 138.0 cubic
inches. The cylinder bore measures 87.5 mm (3.44 inches), while the
piston stroke is 94.0 mm (3.70 inches), resulting in a slightly
long-stroke configuration. This geometry favors improved mid-range
torque and combustion efficiency.
The compression ratio is 10.5:1. Maximum power output is 118 kW (160 Hp
or 158 brake Hp) at around 6500 revolutions per minute. Peak torque
output is 208 Nm (153 lb-ft) at around 4250 revolutions per minute. Idle
speed is electronically controlled and set between 700 and 750 rpm. The
firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The cylinder block is manufactured from aluminum alloy using a
closed-deck or semi-closed-deck design to provide adequate rigidity
while minimizing engine weight. Cast-in iron cylinder liners are used to
provide durable wear surfaces for the pistons. The block incorporates
internal coolant passages surrounding each cylinder, as well as
integrated oil galleries for lubrication distribution.
The crankshaft is manufactured from forged steel and is supported by
five main bearings. Each main bearing is secured by a bearing cap
fastened with high-strength bolts to maintain crankshaft alignment under
load. Thrust control is provided by dedicated thrust bearing surfaces
located at the center main bearing.
Pistons are manufactured from aluminum alloy and feature a lightweight
design optimized to reduce reciprocating mass. Each piston is fitted
with two compression rings and one oil control ring. The piston skirts
are treated with a low-friction coating to reduce noise and wear.
Connecting rods are forged steel units with fracture-split big ends,
providing precise bearing alignment and improved strength.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy to promote
efficient heat dissipation. It features a crossflow layout with intake
ports on one side of the head and exhaust ports on the opposite side.
The head incorporates four valves per cylinder, resulting in a total of
sixteen valves.
Valve actuation is handled by dual overhead camshafts. The camshafts
operate the valves through direct-acting bucket tappets. Valve clearance
is maintained automatically by hydraulic lash adjusters integrated into
the valvetrain, eliminating the need for periodic manual adjustment
during normal service life.
The intake camshaft is equipped with a variable camshaft timing
mechanism that adjusts valve timing based on engine speed and load. This
system improves low-speed torque, high-speed power, and emissions
performance. The exhaust camshaft is fixed-timing. The camshafts are
driven by a roller timing chain system located at the front of the
engine. Chain tension is maintained by a hydraulically actuated
tensioner, and the system is designed for long service life under normal
operating conditions.
The combustion chambers are pent-roof in design, optimized for efficient
airflow and mixture preparation. Spark plugs are centrally located to
promote uniform flame propagation. The chamber shape, valve arrangement,
and piston crown design work together to ensure stable combustion across
the full operating range while minimizing the risk of knock.
The Ford SEBA engine uses an electronically controlled multi-point fuel
injection system. Fuel is delivered from the fuel tank by an electric
in-tank fuel pump, passes through a replaceable fuel filter, and is
supplied to a fuel rail mounted on the intake side of the engine.
Individual solenoid-type fuel injectors deliver fuel into each intake
port.
Fuel pressure is regulated electronically and maintained at
approximately 3.8 bar (about 55 lbs per square inch). Injection timing
and duration are controlled by the engine control module based on input
from sensors including crankshaft position, camshaft position, throttle
position, intake air temperature, coolant temperature, and oxygen
sensors. The system operates in closed-loop mode during most driving
conditions. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane
rating of 95 RON (approximately 91 AKI).
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, wet-sump design. Engine oil
is drawn from the sump through a pickup strainer by a crankshaft-driven
oil pump. Pressurized oil is distributed through the main oil gallery to
all critical components, including crankshaft main bearings, connecting
rod bearings, camshaft journals, and valvetrain components.
An externally mounted, full-flow spin-on oil filter is used to remove
contaminants from the oil. Some configurations include an oil-to-water
heat exchanger to help regulate oil temperature during high-load or
high-temperature operation.
Total engine oil capacity with filter replacement is 5.5 liters (5.8 US
quarts, 4.8 Imperial quarts). Recommended engine oil viscosity is SAE
5W-30 meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C913-D or later. The oil change
interval is 15,000 km (9,000 miles) or 12 months.
The cooling system is a closed-loop, pressurized liquid cooling system.
A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the
engine block, cylinder head, radiator, heater core, and associated
hoses. A wax-type thermostat regulates coolant flow and begins opening
at 88C (190F), reaching full open position at approximately 102C (216F).
The cooling system is designed to maintain stable operating temperature
under a wide range of ambient conditions and engine loads. Total coolant
capacity is 7.0 liters (7.4 US quarts, 6.2 Imperial quarts). Recommended
coolant is a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and deionized
water meeting Ford coolant specifications.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The intake system consists of a panel-type air filter, intake ducting,
and a composite intake manifold designed to promote efficient airflow
and torque production across the operating range. An electronically
controlled throttle body regulates air intake based on driver demand and
engine management commands.
The exhaust system includes a tubular exhaust manifold, a close-coupled
three-way catalytic converter, and downstream exhaust piping with oxygen
sensors located upstream and downstream of the catalyst. The system is
designed to meet Euro 4 or Euro 5 emissions standards depending on
production year and market.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
The ignition system is fully electronic and uses a coil-on-plug
configuration, with one ignition coil mounted directly on each spark
plug. This arrangement improves ignition reliability and reduces energy
losses. Ignition timing is continuously adjusted by the engine control
module to optimize performance, fuel economy, and emissions. Spark plugs
are long-life platinum or iridium types, with a recommended replacement
interval of approximately 60,000 km (37,000 miles), depending on
specification.
The engine operates on a 12-volt electrical system. Engine management is
handled by a dedicated electronic control module supplied by Ford or an
OEM partner. The module processes data from numerous sensors and
controls fuel injection, ignition timing, idle speed, and
emissions-related functions.
Key sensors include crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position
sensor, mass air flow or manifold absolute pressure sensor, throttle
position sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor, intake air
temperature sensor, and oxygen sensors.
Approximate external engine dimensions are 650 mm (25.6 inches) in
length, 620 mm (24.4 inches) in width, and 700 mm (27.6 inches) in
height. Dry engine weight is 155 kg (342 lbs).
Routine maintenance includes regular engine oil and filter replacement,
inspection and replacement of the air filter, periodic replacement of
spark plugs, and coolant replacement at the specified interval. The
timing chain system is designed for the service life of the engine and
does not require scheduled replacement under normal operating
conditions.
The tightening torques are as follows. Cylinder head bolts are tightened
in multiple stages to a final torque of approximately 40 Nm (30 lb-ft),
followed by additional angle tightening as specified by Ford service
procedures. Main bearing cap bolts are tightened to approximately 70 Nm
(52 lb-ft). Connecting rod bolts are tightened to approximately 30 Nm
(22 lb-ft) plus an angle. Spark plugs are tightened to approximately 15
Nm (11 lb-ft). The engine oil drain plug is tightened to approximately
28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
