General Technical Data
The Tohatsu M60C is a carbureted two-stroke
outboard that delivers 60 horsepower. It is regarded as an excellent
value, particularly for saltwater anglers, due to its robust
construction and deep gear ratio, which is well-suited for pushing
heavier loads like those found on center-console or aluminum fishing
boats. The powerhead is derived from the larger M70C model, and it
shares a substantial gearcase with Tohatsu's 90hp motors, contributing
to its durability.
A standout feature is its 11-amp alternator, which provides ample power
for modern electronics, a significant advantage over some competitors.
The engine utilizes a reliable, if slightly dated, electric choke system
and mechanical timing advance. While cold starts can require precise
coordination of the controls, the engine runs smoothly once warm, with
oil smoke primarily noticeable at low RPMs.

Powerhead
The M60C features a three-cylinder, loop-charged powerhead. Loop-charging is a highly efficient method of scavenging used exhaust gases and introducing a fresh fuel-air mixture without the need for traditional piston ports or reed valves in the cylinder walls.
This design contributes to better fuel economy and lower emissions compared to older cross-flow two-strokes. The combustion chambers utilize Tohatsu's "dual swirl" design, which helps meet EPA emission standards for carbureted engines by promoting more complete combustion. The engine has mechanical timing advance.
Fuel System
The fuel system is carbureted, utilizing three separate carburetors - one for each cylinder - to ensure precise fuel delivery. It is designed to run on unleaded regular gasoline with an anti-knock index (R+M/2) of 87 or higher, or a Research Octane Number (RON) of 91 or higher.
The system incorporates a separate bowl-type fuel filter for easy maintenance. The standard external fuel tank has a capacity of 25 liters (6.6 US gallons). For cold starts, the engine employs an electric choke system rather than a primer.
Lubrication System
This outboard uses an automixing oil injection system, which eliminates
the need for manually pre-mixing fuel in the main tank. Oil is injected
at the fuel pump, ensuring that all carburetor components and throttle
butterflies are lubricated. This system simplifies refueling and helps
maintain the correct fuel-to-oil ratio under varying engine loads.
The separate engine oil tank has a capacity of 2.6 liters. The
recommended oil is a TCW-III certified marine oil. The fuel-to-oil
mixing ratio varies automatically with engine load, operating within a
range of 120:1 to 50:1. During the 10-hour break-in period, it is
recommended to add extra oil to the fuel to achieve a 50:1 pre-mix in
addition to the oil injection system.
Cooling System
Cooling is managed by a forced water cooling system, which draws water in through intakes in the lower unit. A water pump, driven by the driveshaft, circulates water through the engine block to dissipate heat. The system is thermostat-controlled, allowing the engine to reach optimal operating temperature quickly and maintaining it for efficient combustion and reduced wear.
Mid Section and Lower Unit
The mid section houses the driveshaft and exhaust passages. The lower
unit is robust, shared with larger Tohatsu 90hp models, contributing to
the engine's overall weight and strength. It features a
forward-neutral-reverse gearbox with a gear reduction ratio of 2.33:1
(12:28).
The recommended gear oil is a genuine Tohatsu oil or an API GL5 grade,
SAE 80-90. The gear oil capacity is 0.9 liters (30.4 fl oz). The lower
unit is fitted with a trim tab, which also serves as a sacrificial anode
to protect against galvanic corrosion.
Trim and Tilt System
The model is equipped with a power trim and tilt system, operated by
electric hydraulic pumps. This allows the operator to adjust the motor's
angle relative to the transom for optimal boat performance and fuel
efficiency.
The trim function is used during operation to fine-tune the boat's
attitude, while the tilt function is used to raise the motor completely
out of the water for trailering, launching, or beaching. A manual
release valve is provided to lower or raise the motor manually in case
of power failure.
Propeller Information
The M60C uses a propeller suited to its gearcase and power output. The ideal propeller size (diameter and pitch) depends on the specific boat and load combination, with the goal of allowing the engine to operate within its recommended WOT range of 5150-5850 r/min.
A demonstration model on a 4.6-meter catamaran used a 15-inch pitch propeller. A propeller table is available in the owner's manual to help select the correct propeller for various applications.

First 10 Hours / 1 Month: Initial inspection and servicing by a dealer.
Every 50 Hours / 3 Months: Check and clean the fuel filter and fuel
tank. Check spark plug gap (0.9-1.0 mm / 0.035-0.039 in) and condition.
Check and re-tighten bolts and nuts. Apply grease to sliding and
rotating parts and grease nipples. Check the oil injection system for
leaks and filter condition.
Every 100 Hours / 6 Months: Carburetor adjustment (by dealer). Check
ignition timing (by dealer). Change gear oil, inspecting for water
ingress. Check water pump impeller for wear or damage. Inspect the anode
for corrosion. Annually: Replace the water pump impeller. Every 100
