The Mercury Verado 400R is an extraordinary
outboard that redefines performance expectations. Based on the
inherently smooth and compact 2.6-liter inline-six architecture, it is
transformed by a water-cooled supercharger and a dedicated cold air
induction system that feeds denser, cooler air to the combustion
chambers. The result is explosive, instantaneous torque that delivers
stunning acceleration; a Force Crossover 26 test boat equipped with a
400R accelerated from troll to plane in just eight seconds.
This immense power is delivered with the legendary Verado smoothness, as
the Advanced MidSection (AMS) with perimeter mounts virtually eliminates
vibration transmission to the hull. The 400R is offered with a choice of
gearcases - the heavy-duty 5.44-inch for traditional applications or the
race-proven Sport Master with low water pickups for enhanced performance
on high-speed hulls.
Fully integrated with SmartCraft Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) and
available with Joystick Piloting featuring Skyhook, the 400R provides
not only blistering performance but also precise control and advanced
station-keeping capabilities. For boaters who demand the absolute
pinnacle of four-stroke outboard performance, the Verado 400R is in a
class of its own.
Engine Type: Inline 6-cylinder (L6), four-stroke, supercharged.
Valvetrain: Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) with 24 valves.
Displacement: 2.6 Liters (158.5 Cubic Inches).
Bore and Stroke: 82 mm by 82 mm (3.23 inches by 3.23 inches).
Power Output: 400 Hp at the propeller shaft (298 kW).
Full Throttle Operating Range: 6400-7000 RPM.
Idle RPM (in neutral): 600 RPM.
Air Induction: Supercharged system with a custom cold air intake, charge
air cooling via a water-cooled supercharger, and electronic boost
pressure control.
Fuel Induction System: Sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection
(EFI).
Ignition: SmartCraft Digital Inductive ignition.
Alternator Output: A belt-driven 70-amp alternator produces 882 W.
Recommended Fuel: Unleaded 95 RON minimum for maximum performance.
Electronic knock control allows safe operation on 89 octane (95 RON)
fuel if premium is unavailable.
Recommended Oil: SAE 25W-50 FC-W synthetic blend racing oil.
Engine Oil Capacity: 8.0 Liters (8.5 US Quarts).
Engine Protection: The SmartCraft Engine Guardian system monitors
critical sensors and can automatically reduce power to prevent damage
from adverse operating conditions.
Starting System: Smart Start Electric.
Controls: SmartCraft Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS).
Steering: Electro-hydraulic power steering.
Trim System: Power trim and tilt with SmartCraft programmable tilt.
Emissions Star Rating: CARB 3-star.
The foundation of the 400R is the robust and inherently balanced L6
platform, upgraded to withstand the stresses of 400 Hp.
Cylinder Block: The engine utilizes a proven 2.6-liter inline 6-cylinder
block with structural upgrades to the cylinder block and head to ensure
classic Verado durability at the higher power output. The square
architecture (bore and stroke both 82mm) reduces piston speeds compared
to other designs.
Cylinder Head and Valvetrain: The engine features a sophisticated Dual
Overhead Cam (DOHC) design with 24 valves actuated by roller cam
followers, eliminating the need for clearance checks. The
Cosworth-inspired design incorporates ample material between the four
valves per cylinder and spark plugs for a long service life, and it
allows for oversized pistons and rings should a future rebuild be
required.
0The fuel system is specifically calibrated for the 400R's
high-performance demands. It uses a sequential multi-port electronic
fuel injection (EFI) system for precise fuel metering under all loads.
The engine's computer manages this process, integrating with the
electronic boost control and cold air induction system to deliver a
seamless and explosive power curve.
The engine utilizes an integrated wet sump lubrication system with a
total oil capacity of 8.0 Liters (8.5 US Quarts). It requires SAE 25W-50
FC-W synthetic blend racing oil, a high-performance formulation designed
to withstand the extreme temperatures and shear forces present in this
supercharged application. A radiator-style oil cooler helps manage oil
temperatures.
Cooling is managed by a high-flow water-cooled system with thermostat
and pressure control, critical for maintaining safe operating
temperatures at high power outputs. The system also serves to cool the
supercharger itself, reducing intake temperatures and significantly
increasing air density for greater power.
| Mid Section and Lower Unit |
Advanced MidSection (AMS): Features perimeter mounts that virtually
eliminate vibration in the boat. For Sport Master applications, the AMS
includes stainless steel guide plates with composite wear pads for
enhanced engine stability and improved handling at speed. Gearcase
Options: The Mercury 400R Verado is unique in offering two distinct
gearcase options.
Sport Master Gearcase: A race-proven gearcase with low water pickups for
added performance, enhanced boat handling, speed, and efficiency. Ideal
for high-performance hulls including catamarans and single-engine flats
boats. Joystick Piloting (JPO) models are available exclusively with
cambered Sport Master gearcases.
Heavy-Duty 5.44" Gearcase: The standard Verado HD gearcase for more
traditional applications.
Gearcase Ratio: 1.75:1.
Exhaust System: Through prop.
The Verado 400R is fitted with a heavy-duty power trim and tilt system
with SmartCraft programmable tilt. This allows for precise adjustment of
the engine angle for optimal boat performance, handling, and shallow
water operation.
Maximum Trim Range: 20° (-6° to 14°).
Maximum Tilt Range: 73° (-6° to 67°).
Propeller selection is critical for the 400R and depends heavily on the
gearcase choice and boat application. The correct propeller must allow
the engine to operate within its 6400-7000 RPM full-throttle range.
Sport Master Gearcase: Designed to work with high-performance
propellers. The exact specifications are application-dependent.
5.44" HD Gearcase: Uses a 31.75 mm (1-1/4 in.) diameter propeller shaft.
With the exception of CNC Cleaver propellers, all propellers used on
this shaft require the heavy-duty propeller hub kit. In a sea trial on a
Force Crossover 26, a 19-inch pitch Quicksilver Tempest three-blade
stainless steel propeller was a perfect match.
Shaft Length Options:
20 inches (508 mm).
25 inches (635 mm).
30 inches (762 mm).
Dry Weight (Lightest Model): The lightest configuration of the Verado
400R has a dry weight of 668 lbs (303 kg). With power steering, an XL
model weighs 309 kg.
Every 100 hours:

The Verado 400R is designed for serious performance applications where
power, acceleration, and power-to-weight ratio are paramount.
High-Performance Center Consoles and Catamarans: Ideal for multi-engine
setups on offshore performance boats, delivering exceptional speed and
handling. Rigid Inflatable Hulls (RIBs): Its exceptional power-to-weight
ratio makes it well-suited for these high-performance applications.
Bass and Deck Boats: Provides rocket-like power for quick acceleration
in competitive fishing and recreational running. Offshore Fishing Boats:
Delivers the power to reach distant grounds quickly with the legendary
Verado smoothness and quiet operation. Pontoons and Tritoons: Provides
unparalleled power for luxury performance pontoons. Multi-Engine Setups:
Popular in twin, triple, and quad configurations, benefiting from DTS
