The John Deere 3164D represents a robust
naturally aspirated diesel architecture prioritizing field
serviceability and operational longevity. Its inline three-cylinder
configuration provides smooth operation through an even firing interval,
with the 1-2-3 firing order delivering balanced power pulses. The
replaceable wet cylinder liners allow for in-chassis overhaul, reducing
repair downtime compared to parent-bore designs. The overhead valve
(OHV) valvetrain with mechanical pushrods offers a simple, accessible
layout for valve maintenance.
The mechanical direct injection system, utilizing a Roosa Master or
Bosch distributor-type pump, operates independently of electronic
controls, facilitating field repairs in remote agricultural settings.
The four-main bearing crankshaft design provides adequate support for
the three-cylinder configuration, with the engine naturally aspirated to
maintain mechanical simplicity. The clockwise rotation (viewed from the
front) matches standard power take-off (PTO) implement requirements.
Engine Type: Inline 3-cylinder, 4-cycle, naturally aspirated diesel.

Gross Horsepower: 45-52 hp (34-39 kW) @ 2,500 rpm.
PTO Horsepower: 40-44 hp (30-32 kW) @ 2,500 rpm for tractors.
Maximum Torque: 156 Nm (115 lb-ft) @ 1,300-1,500 rpm.
Rated Speed: 2,500 rpm.
Idle Speed (Low): 650-700 rpm.
Valvetrain: OHV, 6 valves (2 valves per cylinder). Mechanical pushrods
and rocker arms.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron with a deep-skirt
design for enhanced rigidity. The block utilizes replaceable wet
cylinder liners, each liner sealed at the lower flange with rubber
O-rings and at the cylinder head interface with a compression gasket.
The wet liner design allows coolant to contact the outer liner surface
directly, providing superior heat transfer from the combustion zone.
Four main bearings support the crankshaft, with the thrust washer
positioned at the number three main bearing location. The water jacket
surrounds each liner completely, with coolant passages cast into the
block structure. The camshaft is located on the right-hand side of the
block, driven by a gear train from the crankshaft. The fuel injection
pump mounting pad is machined on the left-hand side of the block, driven
by a driven gear from the camshaft.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron, selected for its
thermal stability and resistance to distortion under diesel combustion
pressures. It employs an OHV configuration with the camshaft located
within the cylinder block. The six valves are arranged with two valves
per cylinder, positioned in a vertical orientation. Valve actuation is
achieved via mechanical pushrods and rocker arms, with adjustable
screw-and-locknut valve lash setting.
The combustion chambers are of the direct injection type, with a bowl
machined into the piston crown. The cylinder head incorporates separate
intake and exhaust ports on opposite sides. Valve seats are
induction-hardened or fitted with replaceable inserts, with valve guides
manufactured from cast iron. The precombustion chamber or direct
injection configuration varies by production year, with later variants
utilizing direct injection for improved cold-start performance.
The engine is equipped with a mechanical direct injection fuel system. A
Roosa Master (Stanadyne) or Bosch distributor-type injection pump is
mounted to the side of the cylinder block, driven by a gear from the
camshaft. The injection pump incorporates a mechanical governor,
providing speed control and load response without electronic input. The
governor includes both idle and maximum speed spring sets, with
adjustable droop characteristics for PTO applications.
Injection timing is adjustable via shims between the pump mounting
flange and the block. Each cylinder receives fuel from a nozzle-type
injector, with injector opening pressure calibrated to 150-160 bar
(2,175-2,320 psi). A fuel supply pump, either integral to the injection
pump or mounted separately, draws fuel through a primary filter and
water separator assembly. Excess fuel returns to the tank via a spill
line.
The lubrication system is a pressurized, wet-sump configuration designed
for extended service intervals in dusty agricultural environments. A
gear-type oil pump, driven by the crankshaft, draws oil from the sump
and circulates it through a full-flow disposable filter. The oil filter
is of the spin-on type, mounted to the side of the cylinder block for
convenient service access.
Oil galleries within the block, cylinder head, and rocker shaft supply
pressurized oil to the main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft
bearings, rocker arm assemblies, and valve train components. A pressure
relief valve maintains system pressure within specified limits. The oil
sump is constructed from pressed steel with a large capacity to
accommodate extended operation before oil changes. Total oil capacity,
including the filter, is 5.7 liters (6.0 qt).
The cooling system is a pressurized, water-cooled design engineered for
the thermal loads of agricultural duty cycles. A belt-driven water pump,
mounted to the front of the cylinder block, circulates coolant through
the cylinder block, cylinder head, and radiator. The water pump utilizes
a cast impeller for consistent flow characteristics.
A wax-type thermostat, beginning to open at 82°C (180°F), regulates
coolant flow to maintain optimal operating temperatures. The system
utilizes a cross-flow radiator with a mechanical cooling fan driven by
the water pump pulley. An expansion tank allows for coolant expansion
and air separation. Total coolant capacity ranges from 8.0 to 9.5 liters
(8.5 to 10.0 qt), varying by radiator configuration.
Glow Plug System: The engine is equipped with a glow plug system for
cold-start assistance. Glow plugs are installed in the cylinder head
adjacent to each injector. The system includes a glow controller or
manual push-button switch, depending on the vehicle application, with a
pre-heat duration of 10-20 seconds at 0°C (32°F).
Timing System: The camshaft, injection pump, and accessory drives are
driven by a gear train housed at the front of the engine. The crankshaft
gear drives an idler gear, which in turn drives the camshaft gear and
injection pump gear. This gear-driven arrangement eliminates the need
for timing belt or chain replacement.
Governor System: The mechanical governor integrated into the injection
pump includes both low-idle and high-speed control functions. The
governor maintains engine speed under varying load conditions, with
adjustable droop characteristics for PTO and hydraulic system
requirements.
Emission Control: The engine incorporates a positive crankcase
ventilation (PCV) system to route blow-by gases back to the intake. No
catalytic converter or exhaust gas recirculation system is present,
reflecting the pre-emission era of this engine’s production.
Electrical System: The charging system consists of a 12-volt, 40-50 amp
alternator. The starter motor is a 2.5 kW (3.3 hp) unit with a
solenoid-actuated pinion drive.
