General Technical Data
The Nissan A14 engine is a member of the long running Nissan A-series family of inline four cylinder gasoline engines, introduced in the early 1970s and used through the 1980s in compact passenger vehicles, light commercial trucks, tractors, and industrial power units. Renowned for its simplicity, reliability, ease of service, and fuel efficiency, the A14 provided dependable operation in global markets where durability and low cost of maintenance were essential.
The A14 was offered in several versions,
including the base A14, the later A14S and A14T high performance
variants, the A14E electronic fuel injected version in certain markets,
and multiple industrial configurations. The A14 remains popular among
classic car enthusiasts and in motorsport due to its strong internal
components, good parts availability, and ease of tuning. Its cast iron
block and aluminum cylinder head construction, simple carbureted fuel
system, and direct rocker arm valvetrain give it a distinctive blend of
durability and simplicity.
The Nissan A14 is a four stroke inline four gasoline engine with
displacement of approximately 1397 cc or 1.4 liters. Bore is 76.0 mm or
2.99 inches. Stroke is 77.0 mm or 3.03 inches. This slightly under
square configuration balances torque production, moderate piston speed,
and efficient combustion. Compression ratio varies by model and market.
Base carbureted versions typically use ratios between 8.5:1 and 9.0:1.
High output versions and later models may reach compression ratios near
9.5:1.
Power output ranges from 65 to 80 horsepower at
approximately 5200 to 5600 rpm depending on year, carburetor
configuration, and emissions controls. Torque output is typically
between 105 and 115 Nm or about 77 to 85 lb-ft at approximately 2800 to
3200 rpm. Firing order is 1-3-4-2. Crankshaft rotation is clockwise when
viewed from the front.
The crankshaft is a forged steel unit supported by five main bearings
for excellent stability and vibration control. Pistons are cast aluminum
alloy with three ring packs, consisting of two compression rings and one
oil control ring. Connecting rods are forged steel units designed for
good fatigue resistance. The engine block is cast iron with deep skirt
construction for rigidity.
The cylinder head is aluminum alloy with wedge type combustion chambers. The valvetrain is an overhead valve (OHV) pushrod design using solid lifters and rocker arms. Valve clearances are manually adjustable. The camshaft is located in the block and gear driven.
A14 Model
Variants
The base A14 is the most common configuration, equipped with a simple
downdraft carburetor, mechanical fuel pump, and basic emissions
equipment. Output is generally 65 to 75 horsepower.
The A14S is a higher output version with improved camshaft profile, more
aggressive ignition timing curve, larger carburetor, and higher
compression. Output ranges from 75 to 80 horsepower.
The A14T is a sport tuned version found in certain performance models.
It features dual carburetors, high lift camshaft, and high compression
pistons. The A14T produces strong mid range torque and improved top end.
The A14E is an electronically fuel injected version used in limited
markets. Multi point fuel injection improves throttle response,
emissions performance, and high altitude operation.
Industrial A14 versions are tuned for continuous operation, stable
cooling, and extended service intervals. Industrial units may use
governors, high capacity air cleaners, heavy flywheels, and oversized
cooling systems.
Fuel System
Fuel delivery on most A14 engines is handled by a downdraft carburetor. Early models use simple one barrel carburetors, while later versions use two barrel carburetors for improved performance. The carburetor includes idle circuits, main metering jets, accelerator pump, choke mechanism, and power enrichment system. A mechanical fuel pump delivers fuel from the tank to the carburetor. Fuel pressure is moderate, typically about 25 to 35 kPa or 3.5 to 5 psi.
Fuel filters are inline replaceable elements. Some later models include feedback carburetors with electronic control for emissions. The A14E uses multi point fuel injection with an electronic control unit. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with octane rating appropriate for compression ratio. Fuel filter replacement interval is typically every 30,000 km or 18,000 miles.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full pressure wet sump design. Oil is drawn from the sump by a gear driven pump and sent through a full flow replaceable spin on filter. Oil is distributed to crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, rocker arms, pushrod tips, and timing components. Oil capacity is approximately 3.5 liters or about 3.7 US quarts depending on oil pan configuration. Normal oil pressure at operating speed is around 300 to 450 kPa or about 43 to 65 psi.
Hot idle oil pressure is around 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi. Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 10W 30 or 10W 40 for general climates. Oil change intervals are typically every 5000 to 8000 km or 3000 to 5000 miles. Industrial versions may require oil changes every 150 to 200 hours depending on duty cycle.
Cooling System
Cooling is provided by a liquid cooling system with a belt driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant circulates through the cast iron block, aluminum head, radiator, and heater core. The thermostat begins to open at approximately 82 C or 180 degrees F and reaches full open at about 95 C or 203 degrees F. Cooling system capacity is approximately 5.0 liters or 5.3 US quarts.
Radiators vary by model, with high performance versions using larger cores. Cooling fans are belt driven fixed units or viscous clutch units depending on year. Proper coolant mixture is 50 percent ethylene glycol and 50 percent water. Coolant replacement is recommended every two years.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
All A14 engines are naturally aspirated. Intake air flows through a dry
paper element air filter. Performance versions use larger air intake
systems. Industrial models may use multi stage filtration or cyclone
precleaners for dusty environments. The intake manifold design varies by
carburetor size and version. Dual carburetor A14T models use tuned
intake runners for improved airflow.
Exhaust manifolds are cast iron. Exhaust routing is simple on base
models. Some versions include catalytic converters. Performance versions
may use tubular exhaust manifolds for improved flow. Industrial engines
may use spark arrestor exhaust systems depending on application.
Electrical and Starting Systems
A 12 volt negative ground electrical system is standard. Alternator output varies from 35 to 55 amperes depending on model year. The starter motor is a 12 volt reduction gear type designed for reliable cranking. Ignition is controlled by an electronic or contact point distributor depending on production year.
Many models use electronic ignition modules to eliminate breaker point wear. Spark plug gap is typically between 0.8 and 1.0 mm or 0.032 to 0.040 inches. Battery maintenance and clean grounds are essential for reliable starting.
Valve Timing and Drive Mechanism
The camshaft is gear driven from the crankshaft. Valve actuation uses solid lifters, pushrods, and rocker arms.
Valve clearance settings are:
Intake: 0.25 mm or 0.010 inches cold
Exhaust: 0.30 mm or 0.012 inches cold
Valve adjustment interval is every 20,000 km or about 12,000 miles.

Length: approximately 620 mm or 24.4 inches
Width: approximately 560 mm or 22.0 inches
Height: approximately 620 mm or 24.4 inches
Dry weight: approximately 115 to 130 kg or 254 to 287 lbs
