The Volvo Penta D3-150 is an in-line
5-cylinder, 2.4-liter diesel engine from the second generation of the D3
family. Produced between 2003 and 2022, this engine was engineered for
high-end leisure vessels where low weight and refined operation are
critical. The design incorporates an aluminum cylinder block and
cylinder head, a combination uncommon in marine diesel engines of this
power class.
A Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) with a charge air cooler delivers
forced induction across the entire engine speed range, while a
common-rail fuel system with piezoelectric injectors enables multiple
injection events per combustion cycle. The engine is fully integrated
with Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) platform, providing
electronic shift and throttle functions, engine diagnostics, and
compatibility with glass cockpit display systems.
The D3-150 meets EU RCD Stage II and US EPA Tier 3 emission standards.
Applications include sailing yachts in the 40 to 50 foot range,
semi-displacement motor cruisers, and repower projects replacing older
cast-iron engines. The engine is available in inboard shaft drive,
saildrive (D3-150 S), and sterndrive configurations.
The Volvo Penta D3-150 is a 4-cycle, turbocharged and aftercooled,
in-line 5-cylinder diesel engine. The 5-cylinder configuration provides
inherent primary and secondary balance advantages over 4-cylinder
designs, reducing the need for external balance shafts. The engine is
rated for pleasure craft applications under ISO 8665 standards.

diesel.

Propeller Shaft Power: 107 kW at 3000 rpm (dependent on transmission
selection).

even firing intervals).

(air-to-seawater aftercooler).
Emission Compliance: EU RCD Stage II, US EPA Tier 3.
Fuel Consumption (at rated power): 217 g/kWh.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast aluminum alloy, a material
choice that reduces engine mass by approximately 30% compared to an
equivalent cast iron block. Cast-in gray iron cylinder liners are
integrated into the aluminum block during casting, providing a
wear-resistant surface for piston ring travel.
The block incorporates an integrated bed plate (ladder frame) structure
that bolts to the lower crankcase region, increasing crankshaft bearing
bore rigidity and reducing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). The
bed plate design eliminates separate main bearing caps. The block
features a front-end transmission housing that integrates the gear train
for the camshafts, injection pump, and auxiliary drives. Six crankshaft
main bearings support the forged steel crankshaft.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast aluminum alloy and features
a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) arrangement. Four valves per cylinder
(two intake, two exhaust) produce a total of 20 valves. The 4-valve
configuration centralizes the fuel injector position for optimum fuel
spray symmetry within the combustion bowl. Hydraulic lash adjusters
(HLAs) maintain zero valve clearance throughout the engine service life,
eliminating manual valve adjustment.
Valve seats are replaceable and pressed into the head. The DOHC design
uses camshafts driven by a timing chain from the crankshaft. The intake
ports are high-swirl designs to promote air-fuel mixing, while exhaust
ports are merged within the head for efficient flow to the turbocharger.
The fuel system is a common-rail direct injection (CRDI) design
operating at an injection pressure of 1800 bar (26,100 psi). A
high-pressure pump, driven by the engine gear train, delivers fuel to a
common rail mounted on the cylinder head. Piezoelectric injectors, one
per cylinder, receive control signals from the Engine Control Unit (ECU)
to deliver up to five injection events per combustion cycle.
The multiple injection strategy includes pilot injections (to reduce
combustion noise), pre-injections, main injection, and post-injections
(for exhaust temperature management). The system includes a primary fuel
filter with an integrated water separator and a water-in-fuel sensor
with an alarm output. A low-pressure return line routes excess fuel and
leakage from the injectors back to the fuel tank.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, forced-feed circuit. A
rotor-type oil pump, driven from the crankshaft nose, draws oil from a
pressed steel or aluminum sump through a strainer. Oil passes through a
spin-on full-flow canister filter before distribution. A seawater-cooled
oil cooler is integrated into the system to maintain oil temperature
under high load conditions. Oil-cooled pistons receive a continuous jet
of oil directed at the underside of each piston crown to manage
combustion temperatures.
Pistons incorporate two compression rings and one oil scraper ring. Oil
Capacity (with filter): 7.0 L (7.4 qt). Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 5W-30
or SAE 10W-40 meeting Volvo Penta VDS-3 or VDS-4 specification
(equivalent to API CI-4 or CJ-4). Oil Pressure (rated speed, warm
engine): 350 to 450 kPa (51 to 65 psi). Oil Pressure (idle, warm
engine): Minimum 100 kPa (15 psi).
The cooling system is a thermostat-controlled, closed-loop freshwater
(heat exchanger) design. A belt-driven centrifugal seawater pump draws
raw water through the hull inlet. Seawater first passes through the
charge air cooler (seawater-cooled aftercooler), then through the oil
cooler, then through the plate-type heat exchanger where it absorbs heat
from the freshwater circuit, and finally exits through the exhaust
elbow.
The freshwater circuit circulates coolant through the cylinder block,
cylinder head, and heat exchanger. A wax-pellet thermostat regulates
freshwater flow to maintain a stable operating temperature. An expansion
tank is integrated into the system.
Freshwater Coolant Capacity (engine only): 6.0 L (6.3 qt).
Seawater Circuit Capacity: Dependent on plumbing configuration (hoses
and strainer).
Thermostat Start Opening Temperature: 82°C (180°F).
Thermostat Fully Open Temperature: 95°C (203°F).
Recommended Coolant: Ethylene glycol antifreeze mixed 50% with distilled
water.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air Intake System: Dry-type paper air cleaner element mounted on the
intake manifold. The Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) adjusts
turbine housing vanes via an electric actuator to optimize boost
pressure from idle to 3000 rpm.
Exhaust System: Seawater-cooled exhaust elbow mixing seawater with
exhaust gases. A flexible exhaust hose connects the elbow to the exhaust
outlet.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground. A 115-amp alternator is
standard equipment. A gear-reduction starter motor is mounted on the
engine block.
Electronic Vessel Control (EVC): The EVC platform is fully integrated
with the engine management system. Functions include electronic shift
and throttle (single-lever operation), engine synchronization for
twin-engine installations, cruise control, low-speed mode for
maneuvering in confined spaces, and diagnostic fault code display. The
EVC system supports up to four helm stations with plug-in installation.
NMEA 2000 connectivity allows engine data display on chart plotters and
multi-function displays.
Engine Control Unit (ECU): Located on the engine, the ECU manages fuel
injection timing and quantity, turbocharger vane position, idle speed,
and engine protection functions (overspeed shutdown, low oil pressure
shutdown, high coolant temperature shutdown).
Engine Mounts: Four vibration-damping rubber mounts, identical to those
used on the larger D4 and D6 engines, are standard equipment.
Timing Drive: A roller-type timing chain drives both camshafts from the
crankshaft. The chain operates in an oil bath with hydraulic tensioners.
No scheduled replacement interval is specified for pleasure craft use.
Dry Weight (bobtail, without transmission): 230 kg (507 lb) for the base
engine. The complete engine with heat exchanger, alternator, starter,
and engine mounts weighs 260 kg (573 lb). Weight with Sterndrive/Tail:
350 kg (772 lb), dependent on drive configuration.
