General Technical Data
The Cummins 4BTAA3.9 is a turbocharged, twin-aftercooled, four-cylinder, direct-injection diesel engine designed for demanding industrial, agricultural, construction, and generator-set applications. As a member of the renowned Cummins B Series engine family, the 4BTAA3.9 delivers outstanding durability, compact packaging, superior low-end torque, and excellent fuel efficiency.
Its mechanical simplicity, robust structural
integrity, and adaptability to various equipment platforms make it a
globally recognized workhorse in environments requiring high reliability
and ease of service. The twin-aftercooler configuration enhances
charge-air cooling, enabling improved combustion stability, superior
power density, and better thermal control under continuous heavy-duty
operation.
The 4BTAA3.9 is a four-stroke, inline four-cylinder diesel engine with a
displacement of approximately 3.9 liters (239 cubic inches). Bore
typically measures 102 mm (4.02 inches), and stroke is 120 mm (4.72
inches), forming a long-stroke configuration optimized for torque-rich
performance. Compression ratio ranges from 16.5:1 to 17.5:1 depending on
model calibration. Horsepower ratings vary by generator, industrial, and
vehicle applications but commonly fall between 80 and 120 horsepower
(60–90 kW) at approximately 1500–2800 rpm.
Peak torque normally ranges between 350 and 500
Nm (258–369 lb-ft), often available at around 1300–1600 rpm. Idle speed
is generally set around 800 ± 50 rpm. The firing order is 1–3–4–2.
Turbocharging and twin-aftercooling significantly improve air density,
reduce charge-air temperatures, and increase combustion efficiency.
The cylinder block is cast from heavy-duty iron engineered for long-term
durability and structural rigidity. Deep reinforcement ribs reduce
vibration and maintain dimensional stability under severe thermal and
mechanical load. The forged-steel crankshaft is supported by five main
bearings, ensuring smooth rotation and long service life in demanding
duty cycles.
Machined oil galleries distribute lubrication
to crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod journals, piston cooling
jets, and camshaft bearings. Coolant jackets cast into the block
facilitate even thermal control. Threaded bosses and mounting pads allow
integration into generator frames, off-road machinery, trucks, pumps,
and industrial platforms.
The cast-iron cylinder head features a direct-injection combustion
chamber optimized for turbocharged and aftercooled operation. Each
cylinder includes two intake and two exhaust valves actuated through
pushrods and rocker arms driven by a block-mounted camshaft. The
combustion chamber design enhances swirl for efficient fuel-air mixing,
supporting strong torque output and clean combustion.
Valve lash is manually adjustable and should be checked at scheduled intervals. Hardened valve seats and high-temperature-resistant guides ensure durability under high-load conditions. Integrated coolant passages stabilize head temperature during extended operation.
Fuel System
The engine uses a mechanical direct-injection fuel system. A mechanical lift pump draws diesel through a sediment bowl or water separator, then through a fine-element filter to the high-pressure inline or rotary injection pump. The pump meters fuel delivery and sets injection timing. Injection pressures commonly range from 260 to 320 bar, providing thorough atomization for efficient combustion.
Multi-hole injectors deliver fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Excess fuel circulates back to the tank for cooling. Some variants include an aneroid boost compensator to regulate fuel delivery based on turbocharger boost, ensuring smoke reduction and improved response under load. Mechanical governors maintain rpm stability for generator or industrial applications.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump configuration operated by a gear-driven oil pump. Oil is drawn through a steel-mesh strainer and pushed through a full-flow spin-on filter. Pressurized oil lubricates the crankshaft, connecting rods, camshaft bearings, rocker arms, and turbocharger bearings.
Piston cooling jets provide thermal management under high output. Normal oil pressure ranges from 300 to 450 kPa (44–65 psi). Idle pressure typically falls between 100 and 150 kPa (15–22 psi). Oil capacity ranges from 9 to 10 liters (9.5–10.5 US quarts). High-quality API CF or higher diesel oil are recommended to ensure durability.
Cooling System
The liquid cooling system features a belt-driven centrifugal water pump that circulates coolant through block and head passages. The thermostat begins opening around 82°C (180°F) and reaches full opening near 95°C (203°F). Cooling system pressure typically ranges from 90 to 110 kPa (13–16 psi).
Total coolant capacity generally falls between 10 and 12 liters (10.5–12.7 US quarts). Twin-aftercooled configurations use either air-to-air or air-to-water cooling systems, depending on application. Proper coolant mixture and radiator condition are essential to prevent overheating and cavitation in high-load environments.
Other Systems
Turbocharging forces more air into the cylinders, improving torque and load acceptance. The twin-aftercooler system cools charge air after compression, reducing intake temperature and enhancing combustion. The intake system uses a dry-element paper filter with optional dual-stage filtration for dusty environments. The exhaust manifold is cast iron designed to withstand thermal cycling associated with turbocharged operation.
Electrical systems are available in 12- or 24-volt configurations with alternators rated between 35 and 75 amperes. The starter is a reduction-gear design for reliable cranking. Optional features include PTO drives, hydraulic pump adapters, auxiliary air compressors, and vehicle-specific accessories. Crankcase ventilation components regulate internal pressure and reduce oil vapor.
Dimensions and Weight
The engine dimensions include 850–950 mm (33.5–37.4 inches) in length, 650–750 mm (25.6–29.5 inches) in width, and 900–1000 mm (35.4–39.4 inches) in height. Dry weight typically ranges from 330 to 380 kg (727–838 lbs), depending on turbocharger configuration, aftercooling type, and accessory equipment. The engine’s compact footprint supports installation in confined machinery bays, generator sets, and mobile equipment.
Maintenance Data
Routine maintenance includes oil and filter changes every 250 hours. Fuel filters should be replaced every 250–400 hours, depending on fuel quality. Air filter service intervals range from 100 to 300 hours depending on environmental dust levels. Valve lash requires inspection every 500–600 hours. Coolant replacement is required every two years or 2000 hours.
Injection pump calibration, injector servicing, and spray pattern testing typically occur every 1500–2000 hours. Compression testing at around 3000 hours assists in determining internal condition. Regular inspection of belts, hoses, turbo lubrication lines, aftercooler passages, gaskets, mounting hardware, and crankcase ventilation components supports long-term reliability.
