The Deutz BF6M1012E is a 4-cycle inline
6-cylinder turbocharged liquid-cooled diesel engine from Deutz's 1012
family. This power unit serves mobile machinery and generator set
applications, producing a power output of 133 hp (98 kW) at 2500 rpm.
The engine features individual single-plunger injection pumps for each
cylinder integrated directly into the crankcase, a design that
eliminates external high-pressure lines between a central pump and
injectors.
The use of single injection pumps per cylinder simplifies service and
allows precise fuel delivery adjustment per cylinder. A mechanical
centrifugal governor is standard, with an optional electronic engine
governor (EMR) available for applications requiring more precise speed
control. The fuel lift pump is integrated into the V-belt tensioner, a
unique configuration that reduces external components. The
closed-circuit crankcase breather routes blow-by gases back into the
intake system, reducing atmospheric emissions.
The Deutz BF6M1012E is an inline, six-cylinder, four-cycle, water-cooled
diesel engine. Its architecture uses a monobloc construction with a
high-grade grey cast iron crankcase integrating the cylinders and the
support structure for the single injection pumps. The combustion chamber
is of the direct injection type. The turbocharger provides forced
induction, increasing air density for complete combustion. The engine
features one inlet and one exhaust overhead valve per cylinder.
Engine Type: Inline 6-cylinder, 4-cycle, water-cooled turbocharged
diesel.
Family: Deutz 1012.
Displacement: 4.79 L (292.2 cu.in).
Bore x Stroke: 94 mm x 115 mm (3.70 in x 4.52 in).
Compression Ratio: 17.5:1.
Rated Power: 98 kW (133 hp) @ 2500 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 447 Nm (330 lb-ft) @ 1500 rpm.
Aspiration: Turbocharged.
Valvetrain: OHV, 2 valves per cylinder (12 valves total).
Firing Order: 1-5-3-6-2-4.
Power Range (family): 41-125 kW (55-168 hp).
The cylinder block is a monobloc construction manufactured from
high-grade grey cast iron. This design integrates the cylinders,
crankcase, and mounting points for the single injection pumps into a
single casting. The deep-skirt crankcase extends below the crankshaft
centerline, providing rigidity for the forged steel crankshaft which
carries integral counterweights. The block uses replaceable dry-type
cylinder liners finished to a finished bore of 94 mm.
The water jacket surrounds all six cylinders completely, supplied by the
liquid cooling system. Seven main bearings support the crankshaft, as
indicated by the seven main bearing pairs specified in rebuild kits. The
closed-circuit crankcase breather system routes blow-by gases from the
crankcase into the intake system, preventing direct atmospheric
discharge. The oil filter mounting base is cast integrally into the
block.
The cylinder head is a grey cast iron block-type head spanning all six
cylinders. This construction provides high rigidity and uniform clamping
force distribution across the head gasket. The valve arrangement
consists of one inlet and one exhaust overhead valve per cylinder, for a
total of twelve valves across all six cylinders. Valves are made from
heat-resistant steel with hardened tips. Valve seats are pressed-in
inserts.
Valve actuation occurs via a camshaft located in the cylinder block,
using tappets, pushrods, and rocker arms. Valve clearance adjustment is
performed using setscrews and locknuts at the rocker arm tips. The
centrally located fuel injector for each cylinder passes through the
cylinder head, directing fuel directly into the combustion chamber in
the piston crown. A four-valve-per-cylinder configuration is not used on
this model.
The fuel system is a direct injection architecture with an individual
injection pump for each cylinder. Each cylinder has its own
single-plunger injection pump integrated into the crankcase, driven by
the camshaft. This multi-pump design allows independent adjustment of
fuel delivery per cylinder. A mechanical centrifugal governor maintains
engine speed under varying load by controlling the fuel delivery volume
of all six pumps simultaneously. An optional electronic engine governor
(EMR) is available for applications requiring more precise speed control
and additional features.
The fuel lift pump is integrated into the V-belt tensioner, a
space-saving design that also serves the belt tensioning function.
High-pressure injection lines, manufactured from seamless steel tube,
carry fuel from each individual pump to its corresponding injection
nozzle. Each injector uses a five-hole nozzle tip for optimized fuel
atomization within the combustion chamber. The fuel filter is a spin-on
canister type. Excess fuel from the injection pumps and injectors
returns to the tank through a common spill line.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed circulation system with a
gear-type oil pump. The gear pump draws oil from the sump through a
screened pick-up tube and delivers it through a full-flow lubrication
circuit. A spring-loaded pressure relief valve maintains system pressure
within a calibrated range.
The oil filter is a paper-type microfilter housed in a replaceable
cartridge as a full-flow filter. Pressurized oil is distributed through
internal galleries to the seven main bearings, six connecting rod
bearings via drilled crankshaft passages, camshaft bearings, rocker arm
shaft, turbocharger bearing cartridge, and the six individual injection
pumps.
Piston cooling nozzles direct oil to the underside of each piston crown.
A plate-type oil cooler, using engine coolant as the exchange medium,
maintains oil temperature within operational limits. The oil pan is a
fabricated steel component with a drain plug at its lowest point. Oil
capacity information varies by sump configuration.
The cooling system is a pressurized, thermostatically controlled liquid
circulation system. A belt-driven, centrifugal water pump circulates
coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder head, turbocharger center
housing, oil cooler, and the external radiator.
A wax-pellet thermostat maintains operating temperature by controlling
coolant flow to the radiator. The system uses a conventional radiator
with a pressure cap maintaining system pressure of 0.5-1.0 bar above
atmospheric, raising the coolant boiling point. A coolant recovery
reservoir accommodates thermal expansion and provides de-aeration.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Air enters through a dry-type air cleaner, passes through
the turbocharger compressor housing, and then through the intake
manifold. The intake manifold distributes air equally to all six
cylinders. No charge air cooler is present on this engine variant.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is a single-piece cast iron
component. Exhaust gases exit the cylinder head, drive the turbocharger
turbine wheel, and then flow through the exhaust pipe and muffler. No
exhaust aftertreatment devices are present on this engine variant.
Starting System: A 12-volt electric starting system is standard, with a
3.0 kW starter motor. A solenoid-shift mechanism engages the pinion gear
with the ring gear mounted on the flywheel. Glow plugs provide cold
starting assistance in the combustion chamber.
Governor System: A mechanical centrifugal governor is standard
equipment, providing all-speed governing suitable for variable-speed
mobile machinery applications. The optional electronic engine governor
(EMR) uses a solenoid actuator on the injection pump rack for electronic
speed control. The EMR system enables additional features such as droop
control and remote speed adjustment.
