General Technical Data
The Toyota 1GD-FTV is a modern 2.8-liter inline four-cylinder common rail direct injection turbo-diesel engine developed by Toyota Motor Corporation for use in medium-duty SUVs, pickups, and commercial vehicles. Introduced in 2015 as part of Toyota’s GD engine family, it replaced the older KD-series engines such as the 1KD-FTV. The 1GD-FTV was engineered to deliver improved performance, fuel efficiency, durability, and lower emissions while meeting stringent Euro 6 and other emission standards.
It features a variable-geometry turbocharger,
an advanced exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, an intercooler, and
a compact design that enhances both cooling efficiency and reliability.
The engine is widely used in vehicles such as the Toyota Hilux,

Fuel System
The 1GD-FTV uses Toyota’s latest common rail direct injection system operating at a maximum pressure of 250 Mpa (36,259 psi). The system employs an electronically controlled high-pressure pump feeding a common fuel rail that distributes diesel to four piezoelectric injectors. Each injector is capable of multiple injections per combustion cycle to ensure precise fuel delivery and optimal atomization, reducing noise and emissions. The injection sequence includes pilot, main, and post-injection phases to smooth combustion and control exhaust temperature.
The fuel filter includes a water separator and an electric fuel heater for cold-weather reliability. The electronic control unit (ECU) monitors rail pressure, fuel temperature, engine speed, and air mass to modulate injection timing and quantity in real time. A return line carries excess fuel back to the tank through a low-pressure circuit. Fuel lines are high-pressure steel for durability, and rubber hoses are minimized to prevent vapor losses.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet sump design. The oil pump, driven by the crankshaft, draws oil from the sump through a strainer and supplies it to the oil filter, main galleries, crankshaft journals, camshafts, turbocharger bearings, and timing chain components. The oil cooler is water-cooled and located adjacent to the oil filter mount for compactness. The total oil capacity, including filter, is approximately 7.5 liters (7.9 US quarts).
Toyota specifies low-ash synthetic diesel engine oil meeting API CK-4 or ACEA C3 standards with viscosity grade 0W-30 or 5W-30. The lubrication system incorporates a pressure relief valve to prevent overpressure and an oil jet under each piston to cool the crown during high load operation. Oil pressure at idle should be around 150 kPa (21.7 psi) and approximately 400 kPa (58 psi) at 3000 rpm. Recommended oil change intervals are every 10,000 km (6,200 miles) under normal service, or 5,000 km (3,100 miles) under severe conditions.
Cooling System
The 1GD-FTV employs a liquid-cooled system using an aluminum cross-flow radiator and a belt-driven centrifugal water pump. The thermostat begins to open at 80°C (176°F) and is fully open by 95°C (203°F). The coolant circuit includes the engine block, cylinder head, heater core, turbocharger bearing housing, and EGR cooler. The system operates under pressure of approximately 108 kPa (15.7 psi) maintained by the radiator cap.
The total coolant capacity is approximately 9.5 liters (10 US quarts). Toyota recommends ethylene glycol-based long-life coolant with corrosion inhibitors, typically Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (red or pink) with replacement every 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or five years. An electric fan or viscous clutch-driven fan assists airflow depending on vehicle model. The water jacket design ensures even temperature distribution around cylinders to prevent hot spots and thermal distortion.
AIR INTAKE AND TURBOCHARGING SYSTEM
Air enters through a large-capacity air cleaner element before passing through a mass air flow sensor. The variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT) uses a vacuum-actuated vane system controlled by the ECU to provide optimal boost pressure across the rpm range. Maximum boost pressure is approximately 1.2 bar (17.4 psi) above atmospheric.
The compressed air is cooled in an air-to-air intercooler mounted at the front of the vehicle, reducing intake air temperature and improving charge density. The turbocharger’s turbine is cooled by engine oil and water circuits for durability. The wastegate and vane position sensors feed data to the ECU for closed-loop boost control, ensuring response and preventing overboost.
EXHAUST AND EMISSIONS SYSTEM
The exhaust system integrates an oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) module. The DPF traps soot particles and periodically regenerates by raising exhaust gas temperature to burn the accumulated carbon. The SCR system uses a urea-based AdBlue solution injected into the exhaust stream before the catalyst to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx).
The ECU monitors differential pressure, temperature, and NOx sensors to optimize regeneration cycles and dosing rates. The EGR system uses a high-capacity cooler and valve to route controlled exhaust gas quantities back to the intake manifold, reducing peak combustion temperature and NOx formation.
Electrical and Starting Systems
The electrical system is 12 volts negative ground. A high-output alternator rated between 90 and 130 amperes supplies electrical power, and a 12-volt maintenance-free battery stores energy. The engine control unit receives signals from sensors including crankshaft position, camshaft position, boost pressure, intake temperature, coolant temperature, fuel rail pressure, and oxygen sensors.
Actuators include injectors, turbo vane control solenoid, EGR valve, and throttle valve motor. The starter motor has a power rating of approximately 2.2 kW. Glow plugs are controlled automatically during cold starts to aid ignition.
Other Systems
The timing drive is by a single-row roller chain with hydraulic tensioner and guide rails, designed for the engine’s service life. The crankshaft is forged steel with induction-hardened journals and eight counterweights. Pistons are aluminum with anodized crowns and graphite-coated skirts for reduced friction. The connecting rods are high-strength forged steel with fracture-split big ends for precise alignment.
The cylinder liners are integral in the cast-iron block and finished by plateau honing for oil retention. The camshafts operate four valves per cylinder through direct-acting tappets. Intake valves measure 34 mm (1.34 inches) in diameter, exhaust valves 29 mm (1.14 inches). The head gasket is multi-layer steel for durability under high cylinder pressure.
The engine mounts use fluid-filled rubber elements to minimize
vibration. The crankcase ventilation system is closed-type, venting
blow-by gases through an oil separator back to the intake. The throttle
valve, though unusual for diesel engines, is electronically controlled
to manage EGR flow and smooth shutdown. A balance shaft assembly is
integrated in the lower block to reduce secondary vibration inherent to
inline-four designs.
The engine management system complies with OBD-II and EOBD standards.
Diagnostic trouble codes can be retrieved via the data link connector
using a scan tool. Parameters monitored include boost pressure, rail
pressure, air mass flow, exhaust temperature, DPF differential pressure,
EGR position, and coolant temperature. The ECU supports adaptive
learning for fuel quantity correction based on injector feedback values.
