The Isuzu 4EE1 is a 1.7-liter, four-cylinder,
water-cooled diesel engine produced by Isuzu Motors. Introduced as the
successor to the 4EC1, this powerplant became known for its longevity
and fuel efficiency across a range of applications. The 4EE1
architecture forms the foundation for the later Circle L (4EE2) 1.7L DTI
and CDTI engines developed in collaboration with General Motors.
The engine appears in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged
configurations, with the turbocharged 4EE1-T and 4EE1-TC variants being
more common. The combustion system utilizes indirect injection via a
swirl chamber design, a technology that promotes complete fuel mixing
and smooth combustion at the expense of some cold-start ease.
A cast iron cylinder block provides structural rigidity, while an
aluminum alloy cylinder head reduces overall mass. The single overhead
camshaft (SOHC) valvetrain operates eight valves. The 4EE1 found its
most prominent application in the Isuzu Gemini, as well as in numerous
Opel and Vauxhall vehicles including the Corsa, Astra, and Vectra. The
engine also appeared in the Mazda 323/Familia under collaborative
arrangements between manufacturers.
The Isuzu 4EE1 is a four-cycle, water-cooled, inline, four-cylinder
diesel engine. The cylinder bore measures 79.0 mm (3.11 in), while the
piston stroke extends to 86.0 mm (3.39 in), creating an undersquare
configuration that favors torque production at lower engine speeds.
Total displacement is 1,686 cc (102.9 cu.in). The compression ratio is
22.0:1, a value characteristic of indirect injection diesel engines. The
firing order is 1-3-4-2, a conventional sequence for inline-four
engines. Maximum power output for the turbocharged version is 65 kW (82
hp) at 4,500 rpm. Peak torque reaches 167-168 Nm (123-124 lb-ft) at
2,400-2,500 rpm.
The naturally aspirated version produces lower output figures, with
44-48 kW (60-65 hp). The turbocharged engine utilizes a turbocharger for
forced induction, with no aftercooler present on most configurations.
The engine management system employs a Bosch VE rotary injection pump
for fuel metering and distribution. The valvetrain is a single overhead
camshaft (SOHC) design operating eight valves, two per cylinder. The
engine dry weight is approximately 150 kg (330 lb).
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron, a material selected
for its high strength, wear resistance, and dimensional stability under
the high compression pressures characteristic of diesel combustion. The
block features a conventional inline-four configuration with the
cylinders cast directly into the iron matrix. Unlike some diesel
engines, the 4EE1 does not use replaceable wet liners; the bores are
machined directly into the block casting.
The cylinder bore surface is hardened through the use of a plateau
honing process. The block incorporates five main bearing bulkheads to
support the crankshaft, each reinforced with vertical ribs connecting to
the side walls. An oil gallery is drilled along the right side of the
block to supply pressurized oil to the main bearings, camshaft bearings,
and hydraulic lash adjusters.
The water jacket surrounds the cylinders and extends upward to the block
deck. The block deck height is set to accommodate the 86.0 mm (3.39 in)
stroke. The engine number is stamped on a machined pad located on the
intake side of the block, near the injection pump mounting surface.
Freeze plugs are pressed into the block at three locations, two on the
intake side and one on the exhaust side.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast aluminum alloy, a material
choice that provides reduced weight compared to cast iron while offering
excellent thermal conductivity for heat dissipation. The head utilizes a
single overhead camshaft (SOHC) configuration operating eight valves,
with two valves per cylinder: one intake and one exhaust. The intake
valve head diameter measures 34.0 mm (1.34 in), while the exhaust valve
head diameter is 30.0 mm (1.18 in).
Valve stems are 7.0 mm (0.276 in) in diameter and are chrome-plated for
wear resistance. The combustion chamber is of the swirl chamber
(indirect injection) type, featuring a separate pre-chamber cast into
the cylinder head where the initial combustion event occurs. This design
promotes complete fuel-air mixing and reduces combustion noise but
imposes a slight penalty in cold-start performance.
The camshaft is supported by four bearings and is driven by a rubber
timing belt. Valve lash adjustment is performed via threaded adjusters
and locknuts on the rocker arms. Valve clearance is measured with the
engine cold. Intake valve clearance is 0.15 mm (0.006 in), and exhaust
valve clearance is 0.25 mm (0.010 in). The cylinder head gasket is a
multi-layer steel (MLS) design. Ten cylinder head bolts retain the head
to the block, arranged in two rows of five bolts.
The fuel system employs indirect injection with a swirl chamber
combustion system. A Bosch VE type rotary distribution pump, mounted to
the engine block on the intake side, meters and distributes fuel to the
four injectors. The injection pump is mechanically governed and includes
an automatic timing advance mechanism. Injection pressure ranges from
120 to 135 bar (1,740 to 1,960 psi) depending on engine speed and load.
Each cylinder is served by a nozzle holder assembly with a pintle-type
nozzle. Injector opening pressure is set to 115 bar (1,668 psi) for the
4EE1-T. The injection lines are steel tubes of equal length, each
measuring 2.5 mm (0.098 in) internal diameter. A gear-type transfer
pump, integrated into the injection pump housing, draws fuel from the
tank through a primary filter with a water separator.
A secondary spin-on fuel filter of 5-micron rating is located between
the transfer pump and the injection pump. Static injection timing for
the 4EE1 is set to 8-10° before top dead center (BTDC), measured at the
injection pump drive shaft. A hand primer pump is located on the
secondary filter head for system priming after filter replacement. The
fuel return system routes excess fuel from the injection pump and
injectors back to the fuel tank through a cooling circuit.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump design. A
gear-type oil pump, driven directly by the crankshaft via a splined
drive shaft, is mounted inside the front cover of the engine. Oil
pressure at rated engine speed (4,500 rpm) is maintained between 40 and
65 psi (276 and 448 kPa). Total oil capacity, including the oil filter,
is 4.5 L (4.8 U.S. qt).
A spin-on full-flow oil filter is mounted to the engine block on the
intake side, accessible from above. The system incorporates a bypass
valve that opens at 25 psi (172 kPa) differential pressure if the filter
becomes restricted. The oil pump relief valve is set to 71 psi (490
kPa). The oil pan is constructed from stamped steel with a capacity of
4.0 L (4.2 U.S. qt).
A windage tray is not fitted on most 4EE1 engines. A dipstick is located
on the intake side of the block, forward of the injection pump.
Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40 meeting API CF or
higher diesel rating. The turbocharged 4EE1-T includes a water-to-oil
cooler integrated into the oil filter mounting base to control oil
temperature under sustained high-load operation.
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled design with a
belt-driven centrifugal water pump. The pump circulates coolant through
the cylinder block, upward into the cylinder head, and through the
radiator. Coolant capacity for the engine alone, without the radiator
and heater core, is 6.0 L (6.3 U.S. qt). A wax-pellet thermostat, rated
at 82°C (180°F), controls coolant flow to the radiator.
A bypass circuit allows coolant circulation inside the engine when the
thermostat is closed, preventing thermal shock during warm-up. The
radiator cap pressurizes the system to 88-108 kPa (12.8-15.7 psi). An
electric cooling fan, controlled by a thermoswitch mounted in the
radiator, activates at 92°C (198°F) and deactivates at 87°C (189°F) on
most passenger car applications. The water pump shaft is sealed with a
ceramic-carbon seal. Coolant recommendations call for a 50/50 mixture of
ethylene glycol antifreeze and distilled water. Freeze plugs are
installed at three locations on the block.
Electrical System: The electrical system operates at 12 volts. The
starter motor is a gear-reduction type with a solenoid-actuated pinion
engaging the flywheel ring ring gear. Starter motor power rating is 1.4
kW (1.9 hp). The alternator is a brushless, internally regulated unit
rated at 60-70 amperes depending on the vehicle application.
Timing System: The valvetrain and injection pump are driven by the
crankshaft via a rubber timing belt. The belt is reinforced with
fiberglass cords and features a Kevlar backing. An automatic
spring-loaded tensioner maintains correct belt tension. The timing belt
replacement interval is 96,000 km (60,000 mi). The 4EE1 is an
interference engine; timing belt failure results in contact between the
valves and piston crowns, causing significant engine damage requiring
cylinder head replacement.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is a cast iron log-type design
merging the four cylinders into a single outlet. The turbocharger on
4EE1-T versions mounts directly to the manifold outlet. A three-way
catalytic converter is not present on diesel 4EE1 engines. An EGR
(exhaust gas recirculation) system is fitted on later versions to reduce
NOx emissions.
The complete engine dry weight without accessories is 150 kg (330 lb).
Overall engine length, measured from the timing belt cover to the
flywheel housing mounting face, is 540 mm (21.3 in). Maximum width,
measured across the injection pump and exhaust manifold, is 610 mm (24.0
in). Height, from the oil pan rail to the top of the valve cover, is 650
mm (25.6 in). The crankshaft flange height (centerline above the oil pan
rail) is 165 mm (6.5 in).
Engine oil and oil filter change intervals are recommended every 7,500
km (4,700 mi) or six months under normal operating conditions. The
timing belt requires replacement every 96,000 km (60,000 mi). The fuel
filter is replaced every 40,000 km (25,000 mi). The air cleaner element
is replaced every 20,000 km (12,500 mi). Valve lash inspection and
adjustment are performed every 40,000 km (25,000 mi). Coolant
replacement is required every 80,000 km (50,000 mi) or 48 months.
Glow plugs are inspected every 60,000 km (37,500 mi) and replaced as
necessary. The water pump is inspected at timing belt replacement
intervals. Piston ring end gap for new rings is 0.20-0.35 mm
(0.008-0.014 in) for compression rings and 0.25-0.45 mm (0.010-0.018 in)
for oil rings. Valve stem-to-guide clearance service limit for intake
valves is 0.10 mm (0.004 in) and 0.15 mm (0.006 in) for exhaust valves.
