The Deutz BF4M1013EC is a 4-cylinder, 4-cycle
inline diesel engine from the 1013 family. This power unit is
turbocharged and intercooled, designed for industrial, agricultural, and
construction machinery applications. The engine operates in the power
range of 118-140 kW, meeting emission standards up to EU Stage II / EPA
Tier 2.
The BF4M1013EC employs a monobloc construction high cast iron crankcase
with single injection pumps for each cylinder, a configuration deviating
from common rail systems. A closed-circuit crankcase breather reduces
environmental emissions. The engine uses a mechanical centrifugal
governor as standard equipment, with an optional electronic engine
governor (EMR).
Forced-feed circulation lubrication with a gear pump and a paper-type
microfilter supports extended service intervals. The six-hole injection
nozzle and three-ring piston design contribute to combustion efficiency.
This engine shares its bore and stroke dimensions with other 1013 family
engines, offering parts commonality across the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder
variants.

The cylinder block is manufactured from high-grade cast iron with a
monobloc construction. This design integrates the cylinders, crankcase,
and timing case into a single casting. Four cylinder bores are machined
directly into the parent metal without replaceable wet liners. The block
features a closed-deck design with a siamese bore configuration where
each cylinder shares a common wall with the adjacent cylinder, reducing
overall engine length and increasing rigidity. The crankcase extends
below the crankshaft centerline with a deep skirt design.
Five main bearing bulkheads support the crankshaft. The water jacket
surrounds the full height of each cylinder bore. Cast oil galleries run
the length of the block, supplying the main bearings and camshaft
bearings. A closed-circuit crankcase breather system routes blow-by
gases from the block to the intake system, preventing atmospheric
venting. The block incorporates mounting points for the single injection
pumps for each cylinder, which are integrated into the crankcase side.
The cylinder head is a single-piece block-type component manufactured
from grey cast iron. This design houses the valve train, injector
nozzles, and intake/exhaust passages in a common casting. Each cylinder
receives two valves: one intake valve and one exhaust valve, arranged in
a parallel valve layout. The valve train is an overhead valve (OHV)
configuration with pushrods and rocker arms. The camshaft is located in
the cylinder block, not the cylinder head.
Valve stem seals are positive-type on intake valves only for the 1013
series. Hardened valve seat inserts on both intake and exhaust sides
resist wear under elevated temperatures from turbocharged operation. The
cylinder head incorporates an integrated exhaust passage that routes
gases to the turbocharger mounting flange. Valve clearance adjustment
uses a screw-and-locknut arrangement on the rocker arms. The cylinder
head gasket is a multi-layer steel (MLS) design.
The fuel system is a mechanical unit pump injection design. Single
injection pumps for each cylinder are integrated directly into the
crankcase, a distinctive feature of the 1013 family. Each pump is a
plunger-type unit injecting fuel at pressures up to 1000 bar (14,500
psi). A Bosch in-line injection pump serves as the combined feed and
distribution unit.
The injection timing is adjustable via shims under the pump plungers.
Steel injection lines route individually from each unit pump to the
corresponding injection nozzle in the cylinder head. Injection nozzles
are six-hole type (6 x 0.21 mm diameter) with an opening pressure of
22.0-22.5 MPa (3190-3260 psi).
A fuel lift pump is integrated into the V-belt tensioner housing. A
mechanical centrifugal governor is standard equipment. An optional
electronic engine governor (EMR) replaces the mechanical governor for
applications requiring isochronous speed control or interfacing with
vehicle electronics. A hand primer lever on the fuel lift pump permits
manual bleeding of air after filter changes.
The lubrication system uses a gear-type oil pump driven directly from
the crankshaft gear. The pump draws oil through a wire mesh suction
strainer positioned at the bottom of the oil pan. Oil passes through a
replaceable-cartridge full-flow filter of paper-type microfilter design.
The filter element is a spin-on canister with a bypass valve opening at
2.5 bar (36 psi). A pressure relief valve in the oil pump opens at
0.65-0.72 MPa (94-104 psi) to prevent over-pressurization.
Piston cooling oil jets are present; four jets thread into the main oil
gallery, each directing a solid stream to the underside of each piston
crown for thermal management under turbocharged operation. The engine
oil cooler is a plate-type heat exchanger cooled by engine coolant. Oil
pressure at rated speed measures 0.40-0.48 MPa (58-70 psi). A low oil
pressure switch triggers a warning at 0.08 MPa (12 psi). Standard oil
pan capacity is 12.5 L (13.2 qt) including the filter.
The cooling system is pressurized liquid-cooled with thermostatic
control. A belt-driven centrifugal coolant pump circulates engine
coolant through the cylinder block water jacket, cylinder head, and
turbocharger (if water-cooled bearing housing is specified). The coolant
flows to the engine-driven fan cooling system (air-to-liquid) or a
remote radiator. A wax-pellet thermostat begins opening at 82°C (180°F)
and reaches full opening at 95°C (203°F).
A bypass circuit permits coolant circulation within the engine when the
thermostat remains closed. The intercooler is an air-to-air unit mounted
externally, not integrated with the engine coolant system. Coolant
capacity (engine only) is 7.5 L (7.9 qt). Total system capacity,
including radiator and external hoses, ranges from 14.0 to 20.0 L
(14.8-21.1 qt) depending on installation. A removable pressure cap
relieves excess pressure at 1.0 bar (14.5 psi).
Aspiration: Fixed-geometry turbocharger manufactured by KKK or
BorgWarner. The turbocharger is flange-mounted to the exhaust manifold.
Wastegate valve limits maximum boost pressure to 1.2 bar (17.4 psi) at
rated speed.
Intercooler: Air-to-air intercooler (charge air cooler) mounted in the
vehicle radiator stack. Intake air temperature is reduced from 160°C
(320°F) at turbocharger outlet to 50°C (122°F) at intake manifold.
Combustion System: Direct injection with bowl-in-piston. Piston bowl
volume is 26.5 cc ± 0.5 cc. The piston uses a three-ring pack: two
compression rings and one oil scraper ring.
Electrical System: 12 V negative ground (standard) or 24 V (optional).
Starter motor power rating is 3.0 kW (12V) or 4.0 kW (24V). Alternator
output ranges from 55 A to 95 A depending on specification.
Crankcase Breather: Closed-circuit system. Blow-by gases are routed from
the crankcase to the intake air duct before the turbocharger compressor
inlet. An oil separator in the breather line returns condensed oil to
the crankcase.
Governor: Mechanical centrifugal governor in standard configuration. The
governor provides 8-10% droop from no-load to full-load. Optional EMR
(Electronic Motor Regulator) replaces the mechanical governor for
applications requiring precise speed control and interface with CAN bus
systems.
