The Deutz BF4M1012E is a turbocharged,
liquid-cooled inline 4-cylinder diesel engine from the 1012 family,
known for its compact dimensions and robust construction. The "B" in the
model designation indicates turbocharging (Aufladung), while "F" stands
for liquid cooling (Flüssigkeitskühlung). This engine is engineered for
a wide range of off-highway applications, including agricultural
tractors, wheel loaders, excavators, and generator sets.
It features a monobloc cast-iron crankcase (high grey cast iron) with
integrated cylinder banks, a block-type cylinder head, and has a
displacement of 3.19 Liters. Fuel is delivered via individual injection
pumps for each cylinder, integrated directly into the crankcase, and
controlled by a mechanical centrifugal governor.
The Deutz BF4M1012E is a four-stroke, compression-ignition diesel
engine. The inline 4-cylinder configuration provides inherent primary
balance. Direct injection and turbocharging are used to achieve high
thermal efficiency and power density.
Engine Type: 4-cycle inline 4-cylinder turbocharged liquid-cooled diesel
Number of Cylinders: 4
Displacement: 3.19 Liters (194.6 cu.in)
Bore x Stroke: 94 mm x 115 mm (3.70 in x 4.52 in)
Compression Ratio: 17.5 : 1
Aspiration: Turbocharged, without intercooler/charge air cooler
Valves per Cylinder: 2 (1 inlet, 1 exhaust)
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2 (standard for inline 4-cylinder engines)
Rated Power (Industrial): 65 kW (88 hp) at 2500 RPM
Maximum Torque: 298 Nm (220 lb-ft) at 1500 RPM
Governed Idle Speed: 700-800 RPM (approx.)
The crankcase is constructed from high grey cast iron in a monobloc
design. The open-deck block integrates the cylinder bores directly into
the casting (parent bore design) without separate liners. The deep-skirt
design provides high rigidity and reduces noise emissions. The crankcase
features an integrated housing for the individual injection pumps. A
closed-circuit crankcase breather system routes blow-by gases back into
the intake to reduce emissions.
Crankcase Material: High grey cast iron
Crankcase Design: Monobloc construction
Crankcase Breather: Closed-circuit
The cylinder head is a grey cast iron block-type head spanning all four
cylinders. It features a cross-flow design with overhead valves. The
camshaft is positioned in the cylinder block and operates the valves via
pushrods and rocker arms. There are one inlet valve and one exhaust
valve per cylinder. The valve seats are made of heat-resistant material
to withstand the high temperatures of turbocharged operation.
Cylinder Head Material: Grey cast iron
Valve Arrangement: Overhead valve (OHV), 1 inlet, 1 exhaust per cylinder
Pistons: Three-ring design (two compression rings, one oil scraper ring)
Connecting Rod: Forged steel rod
Crankshaft: With integral counterweights for vibration damping
Camshaft: Forged steel shaft
The BF4M1012E uses a mechanical Unit Pump System (UPS). Individual,
mechanically controlled single-plunger injection pumps are integrated
directly into the crankcase for each cylinder. This design allows very
high injection pressures independent of the engine’s lubrication system.
A mechanical centrifugal governor integrated into the injection system
controls the fuel quantity to maintain stable engine speed under varying
loads. An electronic engine governor (EMR - Electronic Motor Regulation)
was optionally available for applications requiring more precise speed
control.
Injection Pump Type: Individual mechanical pumps for each cylinder
integrated in crankcase
Injection Nozzle Type: Five-hole nozzle
Governor: Mechanical centrifugal governor (standard); Electronic
governor (EMR) optional
Fuel Lift Pump: Integrated in V-belt tensioner
Filtration: Paper-type microfilter as replaceable-cartridge full flow
filter
Injection Timing: 14° ± 1° BTDC (approximate, check manual for exact
value)
The engine utilizes a forced-feed circulation lubrication system. A
gear-type oil pump draws oil from the sump and pushes it through a
full-flow paper microfilter before distributing it to the main bearings,
connecting rods, and valve train.
Lubrication Type: Forced-feed circulation with gear pump
Oil Filter: Paper-type microfilter, replaceable-cartridge full flow
Oil Capacity (including filter): 9.0 Liters (9.5 U.S. qts)
Oil Change Interval: 500 hours (Normal conditions)
Oil Grade: SAE 15W-40 (API CF-4 or higher)
The cooling system is liquid-cooled and thermostatically controlled. A
centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the cylinder block,
cylinder head, and the turbocharger housing. A wax-type thermostat
regulates the coolant temperature by controlling flow to the radiator.
Type of cooling: Liquid cooling, thermostatically controlled
Water Pump: Belt-driven centrifugal
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 80-85°C (176-185°F)
Turbocharging: The engine is equipped with an exhaust gas turbocharger
to increase air intake density and power output. The turbocharger is
driven by exhaust gas energy and compresses the intake air before it
enters the cylinders.
Electrical System: System Voltage: 24V DC (common in industrial and
agricultural applications). Alternator: 40A / 24V (three-phase). Starter
Motor: 24V, high-torque.
Generator Set Variant: When installed in a generator set, the BF4M1012E
is configured for constant speed operation (1500 RPM for 50 Hz / 1800
RPM for 60 Hz).
