The Nissan RB25DE engine is a 2.5-liter,
inline-six, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine produced as part
of Nissan’s iconic RB-series. Introduced in the early 1990s and used
extensively throughout the decade and into the 2000s, the RB25DE served
as the naturally aspirated counterpart to the turbocharged RB25DET.
The engine powered a variety of rear-wheel-drive Nissan sedans and
coupes, including the Skyline R33 and R34, Laurel C34 and C35, Cefiro
A32/A33 in select markets, and Stagea variants. The RB25DE emphasizes
smoothness, mid-range torque, mechanical durability, and refined
operation. Its cast-iron block, aluminum DOHC cylinder head, multi-point
fuel injection system, and robust timing-belt-driven valvetrain give it
long service life and stable performance.
Designed for both comfort-oriented and sport-oriented applications, the
RB25DE is known for its characteristic inline-six smoothness,
predictable torque curve, and the ability to handle high mileage with
minimal wear when properly maintained.
Unlike the turbocharged models, the RB25DE prioritizes responsiveness
and linear power delivery rather than high-rpm boost-driven performance.
Its reliable cooling, stable oiling system, and conservative compression
ratio make it a long-lived engine suitable for daily use, enthusiast
modifications, and platform swaps.
The RB25DE engine displaces 2,498 cc (152.5 cu in). Bore is approx. 86.0
mm (3.39 in), and stroke is approx. 71.7 mm (2.82 in). This moderately
oversquare configuration provides a blend of mid-range torque and the
ability to rev smoothly. Compression ratio varies depending on
production generation, usually 9.0:1 - 10.0:1.
Power output varies by version:
- Early RB25DE (Series 1): 180-190 hp at 6,000-6,400 rpm
- Series 2 and NEO versions: 195-200 hp at 6,400-6,600 rpm
Torque output: 170-180 lb-ft (230-245 Nm) at 4,800 rpm. The firing order
is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Idle speed is 700-750 rpm. Redline varies depending on
ECU calibration but is generally approx. 7,000-7,200 rpm.
The cast-iron block ensures mechanical stiffness and long-term cylinder
stability. The crankshaft is forged steel with seven main bearings for
high-rpm stability and reduced vibration.
Pistons are cast aluminum with reinforced crowns and lightweight skirts.
Connecting rods are forged steel with floating wrist pins. The overall
rotating assembly is engineered for smoothness rather than extreme
high-rpm operation, although the engine is capable of revving safely
above factory limits under controlled conditions.
The RB25DE uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder head with four valves per
cylinder.
The head features:
- Dual overhead camshafts
- Belt-driven timing system
- Hydraulic lash adjusters
- Variable Cam Timing (NVCS) on the intake cam for certain versions
- Roller-type cam followers (NEO versions)
The combustion chamber is compact and shaped for efficient burn
characteristics. The intake ports are designed for velocity, promoting
swirl and stable mixture quality. The exhaust ports are short and robust
to support thermal discharge. NVCS (Nissan Variable Cam System) improves
low-end torque and drivability by adjusting intake-valve timing
according to load and rpm.
The RB25DE employs a multi-point electronic fuel-injection system.
Components include:
- Electric in-tank fuel pump
- High-pressure fuel rail
- Multi-hole injectors (approx. 250-270 cc/min depending on version)
- Mass-airflow (MAF) sensor
- Throttle body
- Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Fuel pressure ranges 36-43 psi.
The ECU controls dwell time and injector
pulse width using data from:
- Oxygen sensor
- Throttle-position sensor
- Coolant temperature sensor
- Intake-air-temperature sensor
- Crank-angle sensor
- Cam-angle sensor
The MPFI system provides smooth throttle response, stable idle, and
predictable mixture control.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump configuration using a
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: 4.0-4.5 liters (4.2-4.7 US qt)
- Oil pressure: approx. 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; approx. 15-20 psi at
idle
- Recommended oil: 5W-30, 10W-30, or 10W-40 synthetic depending on
climate
A spin-on oil filter handles full-flow filtration. Oil is routed to
crankshaft journals, connecting-rod bearings, camshafts, hydraulic
lifters, timing components, and NVCS system. Maintaining oil quality is
vital to NVCS and lifter longevity.
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled, forced-circulation type.
Components include:
- Belt-driven centrifugal water pump
- Aluminum radiator
- Thermostat
- Coolant overflow tank
- Heater core
- Optional oil cooler in some variants
Standard specs:
- Thermostat opens approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open approx. 95°C (203°F)
- Cooling-system capacity 7.0-7.8 liters (7.4-8.2 US qt)
The RB25DE is sensitive to cooling-system maintenance; air pockets or
clogged radiators can cause overheating.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system includes:
- Air-cleaner housing
- Replaceable paper filter
- MAF sensor
- Large-bore throttle body
- Long-runner aluminum intake manifold
The intake manifold is tuned for smooth throttle response and mid-range
torque. Early versions use side-feed injectors; later NEO versions use
top-feed injectors for improved distribution.
The exhaust system includes:
- Cast-iron or stainless-steel exhaust manifold depending on version
- O2 sensor
- Catalytic converter
- Muffler system with backpressure tuned for emissions compliance
The exhaust note is characteristic of RB inline-six engines - smooth,
linear, and refined.
The RB25DE uses an electronic ignition system with coil-on-plug ignition
in later variants.
Components include:
- Individual ignition coils (late models) or coil pack with igniter
(early models)
- Crank-angle sensor mounted at the crank pulley
- Cam-angle sensor integrated into the cam gear or distributor depending
on generation
- Knock sensor for detonation control
Spark-plug gap measures approx. 0.9-1.1 mm (0.035-0.043 in). Platinum or
iridium-tipped plugs are commonly used for long service life.
- Length: 780-830 mm (30.7-32.7 in)
- Width: 630-650 mm (24.8-25.6 in)
- Height: 690-720 mm (27.2-28.3 in)
Dry weight: 165-185 kg (364-408 lb) depending on generation and
accessories
Recommended intervals:
- Oil and filter: every 5,000-8,000 km (3,000-5,000 mi)
- Air filter: every 20,000 km
- Spark plugs: every 30,000-40,000 km
- Timing belt: every 100,000 km (60,000 mi)
