The Honda F22C1 is a 2.2-liter high-performance
inline-four gasoline engine developed exclusively for the Honda S2000
AP2, produced from 2004 to 2009. As the successor to the earlier F20C
engine, the F22C1 was designed to deliver improved mid-range torque,
enhanced drivability, and long-term durability while preserving the
S2000’s reputation as one of the highest-revving naturally aspirated
production cars ever built.
Although the F22C1 reduces the original engine’s legendary 9,000-rpm
redline, it gains a larger displacement, stronger low- and mid-range
power, and improved throttle response - characteristics that better suit
real-world driving and track usage.
The engine retains the essential attributes that define Honda’s
racing-inspired engineering: a lightweight aluminum block, DOHC VTEC
valvetrain, forged internal components, and a precision-balanced
rotating assembly capable of sustained high-rpm operation. Even decades
after its release, the F22C1 remains one of the most respected naturally
aspirated performance engines, known for its responsiveness, structural
rigidity, and remarkable reliability under demanding operation.
The Honda F22C1 is a four-stroke, water-cooled inline-four gasoline
engine with a displacement of 2,157 cc (131.7 cubic inches). Bore is
87.0 mm (3.43 inches), and stroke is 90.7 mm (3.57 inches), giving it a
long-stroke configuration compared to the F20C. The compression ratio is
11.1:1 for most model years.
Factory output is rated at 237-242 Hp (177-181 kW) at 7,800 rpm,
depending on market and year. Peak torque is approximately 221-225 Nm
(163-166 lb-ft) at around 6,800 rpm. The redline is 8,200 rpm, with fuel
cutoff occurring near 8,300 rpm. Idle speed is generally set at 800 ± 50
rpm. Firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The engine uses a high-strength forged steel crankshaft supported by
five main bearings, forged steel connecting rods, and lightweight
aluminum pistons with molybdenum-coated skirts. The rotating assembly is
designed to maintain precise balance under extreme engine speeds.
The F22C1 uses an aluminum open-deck block with fiber-reinforced metal
(FRM) cylinder liners. FRM technology combines aluminum alloy with
ceramic fibers to provide extremely high wear resistance while keeping
weight low. This allows the cylinders to withstand high side-loading
forces during high-rpm operation and maintain dimensional stability.
The long-stroke design increases torque and improves drivability
compared to the F20C. The block incorporates deep skirts and reinforced
webs to enhance rigidity. Oil jets beneath the pistons help maintain
stable crown temperatures under extended high-rpm operation. The block
also features optimized coolant jackets to evenly dissipate heat across
all cylinders.
The cylinder head is an aluminum DOHC design with four valves per
cylinder, actuated through roller rockers. The F22C1 uses Honda’s VTEC
system on both intake and exhaust camshafts, switching to aggressive
high-lift lobes at high rpm.
Valve sizes:
- Intake valves: approx. 36 mm (1.42 in)
- Exhaust valves: approx. 31 mm (1.22 in)
The combustion chamber is a pent-roof design that enhances tumble flow
for efficient air-fuel mixing. The camshafts are driven by a silent-type
chain with a hydraulic tensioner. The valvetrain is engineered for
extreme rpm reliability, featuring lightweight components and
low-friction roller followers.
The F22C1 employs Honda’s PGM-FI sequential multi-point fuel injection
system. Fuel pressure is maintained between 350-380 kPa (51-55 psi)
using a returnless system with an in-tank regulator.
Fuel management sensors include:
- MAP sensor
- IAT sensor
- ECT sensor
- TPS (electronic)
- Knock sensor
- Wideband upstream oxygen sensor
- Downstream oxygen sensor
- CKP and CMP position sensors
Injectors are high-flow, multi-hole units sized to support high-rpm
volumetric efficiency. Premium unleaded gasoline (minimum 95 RON or 91
AKI) is recommended to prevent knock at high compression.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design with a
high-capacity trochoid oil pump driven directly by the crankshaft.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity with filter: 4.6 liters (4.9 US quarts)
- Oil pressure at 3,000 rpm: 350-500 kPa (51-72 psi)
- Idle oil pressure: 80-120 kPa (12-17 psi)
High-rpm durability is improved through piston oil jets and precise
internal oil routing. Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 10W-30 or 5W-30
depending on climate. Oil and filter should be changed every
8,000-10,000 km (5,000-6,000 miles) or sooner under high-rpm use.
The cooling system circulates coolant through the block, head, radiator,
and heater core using a belt-driven centrifugal water pump.
Cooling specifications:
- Coolant capacity: 6.0-6.5 liters (6.3-6.9 US quarts)
- Thermostat opening: 78-82°C (172-180°F)
- Fully open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System pressure: 90-110 kPa (13-16 psi)
The radiator is aluminum with dual electric fans for temperature control
during track-level operation. Honda recommends coolant replacement every
40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The F22C1 uses a tuned long-runner aluminum intake manifold designed to
optimize mid-range torque while preserving high-rpm breathing. The
throttle body is cable-actuated and sized to minimize restriction.
The exhaust system includes:
- Stainless steel tubular exhaust manifold
- High-flow catalytic converter
- Stainless steel downpipe and mid-section
- Wideband primary O2 sensor
The tuned exhaust header is a major contributor to the F-series engines’
high-rpm power.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
The ignition system uses coil-on-plug modules controlled by the ECU.
Specifications:
- Spark plug gap: approx. 1.0 mm (0.039 in)
- Alternator output: approx. 90-110 A
- Starter motor: approx. 1.2-1.4 kW
- System voltage: 12 V
Ignition timing is dynamically adjusted based on input from knock,
temperature, and airflow sensors.

- OBD-II diagnostics
- Electronic idle-air control
- High-rpm oil pressure fail-safe
- Tuned crankcase ventilation baffling
- Length: 660 mm (26.0 in)
- Width: 610 mm (24.0 in)
