The Nissan QD32 engine is a 3.2-liter,
inline-four, four-stroke, water-cooled diesel engine designed for light
commercial trucks, vans, utility vehicles, and SUV applications. As part
of Nissan’s QD-series, the QD32 emphasizes durability, strong low-speed
torque, simple mechanical serviceability, and long operating life under
heavy-duty conditions.
It was introduced during the 1990s and continued into the 2000s in
multiple variants, including naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms.
Known for its excellent reliability, the QD32 is often found in Nissan
Caravan, Homy, Terrano, Atlas, and regional commercial vehicles.
The QD32 succeeded earlier engines such as the TD series while
maintaining Nissan’s reputation for robust mechanical diesel
powerplants. It uses a cast-iron block, cast-iron OHV head, mechanical
fuel-injection pump (in most variants), gear-driven timing components,
and thermally stable combustion-chamber design. The QD32 provides
dependable power delivery, outstanding longevity, and ease of overhaul
in fleet and commercial environments.
The Nissan QD32 engine displaces approx. 3,247 cc (3.25 liters / approx.
198 cu in depending on variant). Bore is approx. 99.2 mm (3.91 inches),
and stroke is approx. 102.0 mm (4.02 inches). The long-stroke layout
reinforces high torque at modest rpm. Compression ratio ranges from
21.0:1 - 22.0:1. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Idle speed ranges from
650-750 rpm.
Power output varies significantly by
version:
- QD32 (naturally aspirated): 98-105 hp at 3,600-4,000 rpm
- QD32ETi (turbo and electronically controlled): 130-150 hp at
3,600-4,000 rpm
Torque characteristics:
- Naturally aspirated QD32: 155-170 lb-ft (210-230 Nm) at 2,000 rpm
-- Turbocharged QD32ETi: 180-200 lb-ft (245-270 Nm) at 2,000-2,400 rpm
Variants include:
- QD32 (basic mechanical IDI/NON-DI version depending on market)
- QD32Ti (mechanical turbo)
- QD32ETi (electronically controlled turbo with intercooler)
The cast-iron block is engineered with thick cylinder walls, wide
bearing webs, and large coolant passages. The crankshaft is forged steel
with five main bearings. Connecting rods are forged steel with hardened
big-end surfaces. Pistons are cast aluminum with reinforced crowns,
combustion bowls, and three-ring packs. Wrist pins are fully floating.
The bottom end is designed for high-load commercial use, long-term
reliability, and excellent rebuildability. Cylinder liners are
integrated into the block and can be re-bored during overhauls.
The cylinder head is cast iron and uses an overhead-valve (OHV) layout.
A single camshaft is mounted inside the block and operates valves
through hardened pushrods and rocker arms. Valve lash is adjusted
manually with screw-and-locknut adjusters. Valves are arranged in a
simple two-valve-per-cylinder configuration.
Combustion system:
- Earlier QD32 variants: indirect-injection (IDI) pre-chamber design for
quieter combustion
- Later QD32 variants: improved direct-injection combustion chamber
geometry
Glow plugs aid cold starting. The head’s durable casting ensures thermal
stability even under sustained high operating temperatures.
The QD32 uses a fully mechanical diesel fuel system in most versions.
Components include:
- Mechanical lift pump
- Fuel-sediment bowl
- Primary and secondary fuel filters
- Inline mechanical injection pump (Bosch-style)
- Mechanical multi-hole injectors
- High-pressure steel fuel lines
- Fuel-return system
Injection timing is set by rotating the injection pump. Turbocharged
versions (QD32Ti) may use different injection curves. The QD32ETi
includes electronic control of the fuel pump for improved emissions,
fuel economy, and power output. Fuel pressure and timing are governed
mechanically or electronically depending on version.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design using a
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump. Lubrication covers crankshaft
journals, connecting-rod journals, camshaft bearings, rocker mechanisms,
and - on turbocharged versions - turbocharger bearings.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: 6.5-7.5 liters (6.9-7.9 US qt) depending on model
- Oil pressure: approx. 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; approx. 15-20 psi at
idle
- Recommended oil: 15W-40 diesel-rated (API CF-CI)
Turbocharged versions may include oil coolers. Consistent oil changes
extend engine and turbocharger life.
The QD32 cooling system uses liquid cooling with a belt-driven water
pump.
Specifications:
- Thermostat begins opening at approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open at approx. 95°C (203°F)
- Cooling-system capacity: 9.0-11.0 liters (9.5-11.6 US qt)
- Radiator cap pressure: approx. 13-15 psi
Large coolant passages ensure stable operation during prolonged towing
and heavy-load use. QD32ETi versions may include larger radiators and
additional cooling components.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Naturally aspirated QD32 versions use:
- Large-capacity air cleaner
- Replaceable paper-air filter

- Cast-iron manifold
- Downpipe
- Catalytic converter (emission-regulated markets)
- Optional EGR valve depending on region
Turbocharged versions feature robust manifolds and high-temperature
gaskets.
