General Technical Data
The Honda F20A4 is a 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine produced for select Honda Accord and regional market models during the 1990s. Developed as part of Honda’s F-series engine family, the F20A4 emphasizes reliability, smooth operation, and efficient performance for everyday driving. With its cast-iron cylinder block and aluminum alloy cylinder head, it combines long-term durability with enhanced thermal management.
The dual overhead camshaft layout with four
valves per cylinder provides improved breathing efficiency, stable
combustion, and balanced torque characteristics. The firing order is
1-3-4-2. The engine is known for its dependable behavior, low
maintenance requirements, and suitability for a wide range of driving
conditions.
The engine displaces 1997 cc (1.997 liters / 121.9 cubic inches). Bore
is 85.0 mm (3.35 inches), and stroke is 88.0 mm (3.46 inches), forming a
mildly long-stroke configuration that supports strong mid-range torque.
Compression ratio typically ranges from 9.0 to 9.5 to 1 depending on
market calibration. Power output is approximately 148 to 150 horsepower
(110 to 112 kW / 150 to 152 PS) around 6000 rpm. Maximum torque averages
137 to 142 lb-ft (186 to 193 Nm) near 5000 rpm.
Idle speed is typically set between 700 and 750
rpm. The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings to ensure stable
rotation under varying loads. Aluminum alloy pistons use a three-ring
arrangement for effective sealing and controlled oil consumption. Forged
steel connecting rods provide strong resistance to long-term mechanical
fatigue.
The cast-iron cylinder block provides long-term dimensional stability
and durability. It contains integrated coolant passages and oil
galleries to ensure controlled lubrication and temperature regulation.
The cylinders are machined to precise tolerances, allowing consistent
ring sealing and minimal friction losses. The block houses the
crankshaft, main bearings, connecting rods, and piston assemblies.
The aluminum alloy cylinder head incorporates dual overhead camshafts
(DOHC) that operate four valves per cylinder via rocker arms. This
configuration improves airflow and combustion stability across the rpm
range. Intake and exhaust ports are cast and machined for optimized
mixture flow.
Valve sizes, seat angles, and port shapes are engineered to deliver efficiency, durability, and predictable wear characteristics. The DOHC valvetrain uses camshaft-driven rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters depending on market version. The camshafts are belt-driven.
Fuel System
0The F20A4 uses an electronically controlled multi-point fuel injection system. An electric in-tank fuel pump supplies fuel through a high-pressure line and filter to the fuel rail. Solenoid-operated injectors meter fuel into each intake port. Fuel pressure is regulated at approximately 300 kPa (43 lbs per square inch).
The engine control unit adjusts fuel delivery using inputs from sensors including manifold absolute pressure, throttle position, intake air temperature, engine coolant temperature, crank angle, and oxygen content. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKI (91 to 92 RON).
Lubrication System
A full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system supplies oil to all major rotating and sliding surfaces. A crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump circulates the oil through a pickup screen, oil filter, and main oil galleries. Lubrication reaches the crankshaft bearings, connecting rod journals, camshaft journals, and valvetrain components.
Total oil capacity ranges from 4.0 to 4.3 liters (4.2 to 4.5 US quarts). Recommended oil viscosity includes SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on environmental conditions. Typical oil pressure at cruising speed ranges from 300 to 400 kPa (44 to 58 psi).
Cooling System
The cooling system uses a liquid-based forced-circulation design. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump pushes coolant through the block, cylinder head, radiator, heater core, and bypass passages. Thermostat initial opening occurs at approximately 82 C (180 degrees F) and full opening occurs at approximately 95 C (203 degrees F).
Cooling system capacity ranges from 6.2 to 6.8 liters (6.5 to 7.2 US quarts). A 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol and distilled water is recommended. Radiator cap pressure typically ranges from 88 to 108 kPa.
Other Systems
0Additional systems include the positive crankcase ventilation system for vapor management, an evaporative emissions system for fuel vapor control, and an exhaust gas recirculation system for emissions reduction depending on market requirements. The intake system consists of a sealed airbox, dry paper filter, intake ducting, and an aluminum manifold engineered for mid-range torque.
The exhaust system uses a cast-iron exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, resonators, and mufflers. Ignition is distributor-based with internal coil and pickup sensors. Spark plug gap is approximately 1.1 mm (0.043 inches). Alternator output ranges from 80 to 90 amperes. Electrical system voltage is 12 volts.
Dimensions and Weight
Approximate engine dimensions include a length of 660 to 690 mm (26.0 to 27.2 inches), width of 600 to 640 mm (23.6 to 25.2 inches), and height of 660 to 690 mm (26.0 to 27.2 inches). Dry weight ranges from 130 to 150 kg (287 to 331 lbs) depending on configuration.
Maintenance Data
Routine maintenance includes oil changes every 5000 to 7500 km (3000 to 4500 miles), air filter service every 20,000 km (12,400 miles), fuel filter replacement every 40,000 km (25,000 miles), and coolant replacement every 40,000 km or two years.
Spark plugs should be replaced every 20,000 to 40,000 km. Valve clearance inspection is recommended every 40,000 to 50,000 km (25,000 to 31,000 miles). Timing belt replacement is required every 90,000 to 100,000 km (56,000 to 62,000 miles).
Tightening Torques
Cylinder head bolts require 29 Nm (21 lb-ft) followed by 59 Nm (44 lb-ft) plus an additional 90 degrees. Main bearing caps require 60 to 70 Nm (44 to 52 lb-ft). Connecting rod bolts require 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) plus 90 degrees.
Flywheel bolts require 85 to 95 Nm (63 to 70 lb-ft) plus 90 degrees. Crankshaft pulley bolt requires 180 to 200 Nm (133 to 148 lb-ft). Spark plugs require 18 Nm (13 lb-ft). Oil drain plug requires 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
Vehicle Applications
The Honda F20A4 engine was used in specific Accord models tailored for European and international markets. It is valued for refined performance, dependable operation, efficient combustion, and long-term durability.
