General Technical Data
The Honda A20A2 is a 2.0-liter inline-four, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine produced during the mid-to-late1980s as part of Honda's A-series family. It was installed mainly in the Honda Accord and Prelude, serving as a durable, practical, and efficient powerplant. The A20A2 features a cast-iron block paired with an aluminum cylinder head, providing strong rigidity with efficient heat transfer. The engine incorporates a single overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder, and Honda’s early PGM-FI electronic fuel-injection system.
Known for reliability, smoothoperation, and
ease of maintenance, the A20A2 was engineered for everyday drivability,
moderate performance, and long service life. The firing order is
1-3-4-2, ensuring balanced mechanical operation. While not designed for
high performance, the A20A2 remains appreciated for its longevity and
predictable behavior.
The A20A2 displaces 1955 cc (1.955 liters / 119.3 cubic inches). Bore is
82.7 mm (3.26 inches), and stroke is 91.0 mm (3.58 inches), forming a
long-stroke configuration optimized for torque in the low and mid RPM
ranges. The compression ratio is approximately 9.0 to 1 depending on
production year and market. Power output typically reaches 110 to 120
horsepower (82 to 89 kW / 112 to 122 PS) at around 5500 rpm.
Peak torque is approximately 120 to 130 lb-ft (162 to 176 Nm) at about 3500 to 4000 rpm. Idle speed is generally 700 to 750 rpm. The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings. Aluminum alloy pistons use a three-ring arrangement. Connecting rods are forged steel. The aluminum head contains a SOHC valvetrain with rocker arms actuating sixteen valves.
Fuel System
The A20A2 uses Honda's PGM-FI programmed electronic fuel-injection system. An in-tank electric fuel pump supplies fuel through a filter to the fuel rail feeding four solenoid injectors. Fuel pressure is maintained at approximately 280 to 300 kPa (41 to 44 lbs per square inch).
The ECU adjusts fuel delivery using inputs from sensors including manifold absolute pressure, throttle position, intake air temperature, coolant temperature, and oxygen. The throttle body is cable-operated and incorporates idle air control components. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 AKI (91 to 92 RON).
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump type. A crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump delivers oil through a pickup strainer and into a spin-on full-flow oil filter. Pressurized oil lubricates the crankshaft bearings, connecting rods, camshaft journals, rocker system, and internal galleries. Oil capacity with filter is approximately 4.0 to 4.3 liters (4.2 to 4.5 US quarts).
Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on climate and driving conditions. Normal oil pressure at operating speed ranges from 300 to 400 kPa (44 to 58 psi). A positive crankcase ventilation system routes blow-by gases to the intake for combustion.
Cooling System
The A20A2 uses a liquid-cooled, pressurized cooling system. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the block, head, radiator, and heater core. The thermostat begins opening at approximately 82 C (180 degrees F) and is fully open near 95 C (203 degrees F).
Cooling system capacity ranges from 6.0 to 6.5 liters (6.3 to 6.9 US quarts). Radiator cap pressure is typically 88 to 108 kPa. A 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol and distilled water is recommended. Coolant service interval is every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake system includes a sealed airbox, dry paper air filter, intake ducting, and an aluminum intake manifold engineered for smooth mid-range torque. Air filter replacement is recommended every 20,000 km (12,400 miles).
The exhaust manifold is cast iron and channels gases to the catalytic converter. Downstream components include resonators and mufflers. Oxygen sensors aid in closed-loop operation.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is controlled by a distributor assembly mounted on the cylinder head. It contains the ignition coil, pickup sensors, and mechanical advance mechanisms. Spark plug specification includes NGK or Denso equivalents with a gap of 1.1 mm (0.043 inches).
Replacement intervals range from 20,000 to 40,000 km depending on plug type. The alternator produces approximately 70 to 80 amperes. System voltage is 12 volts. The starter motor is a reduction-gear unit.
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
A reinforced rubber timing belt synchronizes crankshaft and camshaft rotation. Replacement interval is 90,000 to 100,000 km (56,000 to 62,000 miles). Belt tension is regulated by a spring-loaded tensioner. Accurate alignment requires matching timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft sprocket.
