The Yanmar TS130 is a horizontal,
single-cylinder, water-cooled 4-stroke diesel engine from the revered TS
series, produced from the 1970s through the 1990s. This engine was
engineered for stationary agricultural and industrial applications where
extreme durability, fuel adaptability, and sustained low-speed operation
are required. The Yanmar TS130 features a swirl-type pre-combustion
chamber indirect injection system - a design providing smoother
operation, reduced combustion noise, and tolerance for lower-grade fuels
compared to direct injection engines.
With a bore and stroke of 95 mm x 95 mm, the engine displaces 0.666
liters and produces 13.0 hp at 2,400 rpm (maximum output) and 11.0 hp at
2,400 rpm (continuous rating). The lubrication system uses forced
lubrication via a trochoid pump. Available in two cooling
configurations: the TS130H with a hopper tank (evaporative cooling) and
the TS130C with a radiator. The TS130 became a standard powerplant for
rice hullers, heavy irrigation pumps, and large-scale power tillers,
establishing a reputation for decades of service life with proper
maintenance.

The cylinder block is constructed from heavy-duty cast iron, a material
choice providing the structural rigidity, vibration damping, and thermal
mass required for sustained stationary diesel operation. The block
features a horizontal configuration with the cylinder bore machined
directly into the casting. The crankshaft is supported by two main
bearings.
The connecting rod is forged steel. The piston is aluminum alloy with a
combustion bowl designed to work with the indirect injection
pre-combustion chamber system. The heavy-duty cast iron construction
contributes to the engine's reputation for extreme durability, often
lasting decades with proper maintenance.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron, ensuring uniform
thermal expansion with the cylinder block. The valve arrangement is
overhead valve (OHV) with two valves - one intake and one exhaust -
actuated by pushrods and rocker arms from a camshaft located within the
cylinder block. The valvetrain incorporates mechanical lash adjusters,
requiring periodic valve clearance inspection and manual adjustment.
The defining feature of the cylinder head is the integrated swirl-type
pre-combustion chamber - a compact antechamber where fuel is partially
burned before entering the main combustion chamber. This indirect
injection system enables smoother engine operation, reduced combustion
noise, and tolerance for lower-grade fuels, making the engine suitable
for agricultural settings where fuel quality varies. The cylinder head
incorporates intake and exhaust passages and is drilled with dedicated
cooling channels.
The fuel system employs indirect injection with a mechanical in-line
injection pump. The injector is a mechanical, spring-loaded pintle-type
nozzle. The swirl-type pre-combustion chamber creates air motion that
promotes complete combustion of the injected fuel.
A mechanical centrifugal governor controls fuel delivery based on engine
speed and load demand. The system includes a fuel filter between the
fuel tank and injection pump. The injection pump includes a manual
shut-off lever for stopping the engine.
0The lubrication system is a pressurized, full-flow wet-sump design
utilizing a trochoid-type oil pump - a compact, positive-displacement
pump with inner and outer rotors. The oil pump is driven from the
crankshaft and draws fluid from a cast iron oil pan.
A full-flow spin-on oil filter is mounted to the engine. The total oil
capacity is 2.4 liters (2.5 qt). Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 30 or
15W-40, conforming to API CC, CD, or higher diesel specifications.
The TS130 is available in two cooling
configurations:
TS130H (Hopper-cooled): This variant uses an evaporative cooling system
with a hopper tank mounted above the engine. Water circulates by natural
convection; as water absorbs heat from the cylinder, it rises into the
hopper where evaporative cooling reduces temperature. This system
operates without a water pump or thermostat, providing extreme
simplicity in remote agricultural locations where maintenance access is
limited.
TS130C (Radiator-cooled): This variant uses a conventional pressurized
cooling system with a belt-driven centrifugal water pump, thermostat,
and front-mounted radiator. This configuration provides more precise
temperature control for applications requiring sustained high-load
operation.
Both systems use fresh water or ethylene glycol-based coolant depending
on climate conditions.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
0Intake System: The intake system includes a dry-type pleated paper air
filter suitable for agricultural environments. The horizontal intake
manifold draws air through the filter before entering the cylinder head.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is constructed from cast iron with
a single outlet flange. A muffler reduces exhaust noise for operator
comfort in stationary applications.
Starting System: The engine is available with either a manual hand-crank
starting system or an optional electric starter with 12-volt battery.
The electric start configuration includes a starter motor and a small
alternator or dynamo for battery charging.
Governor System: The mechanical centrifugal governor within the
injection pump maintains engine speed under varying loads, calibrated
for stationary power applications such as pumps and mills.

Rice Hullers: The TS130 serves as a stationary powerplant for rice
milling equipment, where the engine operates at continuous rated output
for extended periods. The swirl-type pre-combustion chamber provides
smooth operation and fuel adaptability for agricultural-grade diesel.
The engine is paired with gearboxes such as the 06 Manufacturing model.
Heavy Irrigation Pumps: The TS130 powers centrifugal and turbine
irrigation pumps for agricultural water supply. The horizontal
configuration allows direct coupling to pump shafts without right-angle
drives. The hopper-cooled TS130H variant is preferred in remote
locations where radiator maintenance is impractical.
Power Tillers: Large-scale power tillers (two-wheel tractors) use the
TS130 as their primary propulsion and PTO power source. The engine's
low-speed torque characteristic suits soil preparation tasks including
plowing, harrowing, and rotary tilling.
Rice Mills: The TS130 provides mechanical power for small- to
medium-scale rice milling operations, driving huskers, polishers, and
separators through belt drives.
Industrial Gearbox Applications: The TS130 is specified as a recommended
engine for gearbox models including the 06 Manufacturing unit (2.5:1 to
3.5:1 ratios) and the 16A Manufacturing unit (2.1:1 to 4:1 ratios).
These gearboxes provide speed reduction for high-torque stationary
applications including conveyors, winches, and processing equipment.
Generator Drive: The TS130 powers small single-phase or three-phase
diesel generators for remote agricultural facilities and rural workshops
lacking grid electricity. The engine's governed speed of 2400 rpm
translates to 50 Hz output at the generator head.
