The John Deere 6619AF is a 10.1-liter inline
6-cylinder diesel engine from the 500 Series family. The "AF"
designation signifies a Turbocharged and Aftercooled (Air-to-Water)
configuration, engineered for high-output demands in industrial and
agricultural machinery. This power unit was designed to deliver
sustained torque and thermal efficiency in heavy-duty applications,
including four-wheel drive (4WD) tractors and self-propelled harvesters.
Its architecture reflects an era of robust, serviceable design
prioritizing mechanical durability and field maintainability.
The John Deere 6619AF is a naturally aspirated, 4-stroke cycle diesel
engine enhanced with turbocharging and an air-to-water aftercooler. It
features an inline 6-cylinder configuration with a cast iron block and a
replaceable wet cylinder liner design. The valvetrain is a
pushrod-actuated overhead valve (OHV) system with 2 valves per cylinder.
The engine utilizes an inline mechanical fuel injection pump for precise
fuel metering.
Its construction emphasizes structural rigidity with a forged steel
crankshaft and fracture-split connecting rods. Cooling is managed by a
gear-driven centrifugal water pump, while lubrication relies on a
full-flow filtration system with a gear-type oil pump. This engine omits
electronic engine controls, relying instead on mechanical governor and
injection timing systems.

The cylinder block is constructed from high-strength cast iron with a
deep-skirt design, providing rigid support for the main bearing webs.
The block incorporates replaceable wet cylinder liners, a feature
enabling overhaul without block replacement. Each liner seals at the top
with a compressed gasket and at the bottom with elastomeric O-rings.
The liner protrusion above the block deck is a controlled dimension:
0.025 mm to 0.102 mm (0.001 in to 0.004 in) to ensure proper cylinder
head gasket compression. The block houses seven main bearings with the
thrust bearing located at the center position (No. 4). Oil galleries are
cast integrally to supply the main bearings, camshaft journals, and
piston cooling jets.
Crankshaft: Forged from micro-alloy steel with induction-hardened fillet
radii. The crankshaft features seven main journals and six rod journals.
Main journal diameter range: 95.2 mm to 95.3 mm (3.748 in to 3.750 in).
Rod journal diameter range: 79.3 mm to 79.4 mm (3.123 in to 3.125 in).
The crankshaft incorporates integrated counterweights and a torsional
vibration damper at the front end.
Connecting Rods: Manufactured as fracture-split (cracked) powder metal
components for precise cap alignment. The rod beam features an I-beam
profile. The piston pin bore has a bushing of bronze alloy.
Pistons: Cast aluminum alloy with a high-silicon content. The piston
crown incorporates a shallow re-entrant combustion bowl. Three piston
rings: two compression rings (top ring chrome-plated, second ring
tapered) and one oil control ring with an expander. Piston pin diameter:
47.6 mm (1.875 in), full-floating type retained by circlips.
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast iron component, housing the
overhead valve train and combustion chambers. Each cylinder features two
valves: one intake and one exhaust. The valve arrangement is symmetrical
relative to the cylinder bore centerline. Intake valves have a head
diameter of 47.6 mm (1.875 in) and a stem diameter of 11.1 mm (0.4375
in).
Exhaust valves are constructed from a high-temperature nickel-chromium
alloy with a head diameter of 47.4 mm (1.865 in) and an overall length
of 168.1 mm (6.620 in), fitted with a 45-degree face angle. The valve
seats are induction-hardened directly into the cylinder head material.
Valve guides are replaceable and manufactured from powdered metal. The
cross-flow port design positions the intake manifold on one side of the
head and the exhaust manifold on the opposite side to reduce thermal
loading on the intake charge.
The fuel system is a mechanical high-pressure inline injection system. A
Robert Bosch P-Series injection pump is driven by the engine camshaft
gear. The pump contains individual plungers and barrels for each
cylinder, with fuel delivery metered by a mechanical governor that
regulates engine speed in response to load changes.
Injection timing is fixed by shim adjustment between the pump and its
drive housing, with a static setting of 18° BTDC. High-pressure
injection lines of equal length deliver fuel to spring-loaded
pintle-type injectors mounted in the cylinder head. Excess fuel returns
to the tank via a return line. A primary fuel filter (water separator)
and a secondary spin-on filter are installed in the supply line.
The lubrication system is a pressurized, full-flow filtration design. A
gear-type oil pump is mounted on the front timing gear cover and driven
directly by the crankshaft gear. Oil is drawn from a structural steel or
cast aluminum oil pan through a suction screen. The pump delivers oil to
a full-flow spin-on filter mounted externally on the cylinder block.
A bypass valve within the filter housing opens at a differential
pressure of 172 kPa (25 psi) to maintain flow if the filter becomes
restricted. Piston cooling jets are integral to the main bearing
saddles; each jet directs an oil stream upward to the underside of the
piston crown for thermal management. The system is calibrated to
maintain 310 kPa to 448 kPa (45 psi to 65 psi) at rated engine speed.
The cooling system is a pressurized, thermostatically controlled liquid
circuit. A gear-driven centrifugal water pump is mounted on the front of
the cylinder block and driven by the camshaft gear. The pump circulates
coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and the air-to-water
aftercooler core integrated into the intake manifold.
A wax-pellet thermostat, located in the thermostat housing at the
coolant outlet, begins to open at 82°C (180°F) and reaches full open at
94°C (202°F). The cooling system operates at a pressure cap rating of 69
kPa (10 psi). A separate coolant circuit supplies the turbocharger
center housing for bearing cooling.
Timing Drive: All auxiliary drives (camshaft, injection pump, oil pump,
water pump) are driven by helical-cut gears from the crankshaft gear.
This gear train is enclosed in the front timing case. No timing chain or
belt is used.
Aftercooler: The air-to-water aftercooler is integrated into the intake
manifold casting. Engine coolant circulates through the aftercooler
core, reducing intake air temperature after the turbocharger compressor.
This cooled intake charge increases air density for improved combustion
efficiency and lower exhaust gas temperatures.
Emission Control: This engine predates electronic emission control
systems. Combustion management relies on mechanical injection timing,
turbocharger boost characteristics, and precise valve timing.
Length: 1194 mm (47.0 in) measured from front of accessory drive to
flywheel housing rear face.
Width: 711 mm (28.0 in) at maximum engine envelope.
Height: 1245 mm (49.0 in) from oil pan rail to top of rocker arm cover.
Dry Weight: 975 kg (2150 lb) without clutch, flywheel, or attached
fluids.
Engine Oil Capacity (with filter): 32 L to 36 L (34 qt to 38 qt).
Recommended Oil: SAE 15W-40, API CI-4 or higher, John Deere Plus-50 II.
Coolant Capacity (engine only): 20 L (21 qt).
