The Yanmar TF160 is a horizontal,
single-cylinder, 4-stroke water-cooled diesel engine from the TF series.
This model is the high-power variant within the family, specifically
engineered for heavy-duty agricultural and industrial tasks requiring
more torque than the lower-rated 10-12 hp units. The engine is available
in two primary configurations: the TF160H equipped with a hopper tank
for cooling, and the TF160M featuring a radiator cooling system.
The engine employs a direct injection combustion system, a feature that
ensures dynamic power generation and efficient fuel utilization. The
substantial displacement of 0.857 L (857 cc) is achieved through a large
102 mm bore and 105 mm stroke, providing the necessary leverage for high
torque output at low engine speeds. To manage the increased vibration
generated by the large single piston, the TF160 is equipped with a
dual-shaft balancer system. The forced lubrication system utilizes a
trochoid pump to deliver oil under pressure, enhancing reliability and
reducing maintenance requirements compared to simpler splash-lubricated
designs.
The Yanmar TF160 operates on a four-stroke diesel cycle with compression
ignition and direct injection. The engine utilizes a horizontal
single-cylinder configuration.

Displacement: 0.857 L (857 cc / 52.3 cu. in)
Bore x Stroke: 102.0 mm x 105.0 mm (4.016 in x 4.134 in)
Compression Ratio: 17.7:1
Firing Order: Single cylinder - fires every 720°
Maximum Output: 11.8 kW (16.0 hp) @ 2,400 rpm
Continuous Output: 10.3 kW (14.0 hp) @ 2,400 rpm
Max Torque: 59.8 Nm (44.1 lb-ft) @ 1,600 rpm
Fuel System: Direct Injection (DI) with Bosch-type injection pump
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
The cylinder block is constructed from high-strength cast iron, forming
the backbone of the engine. The heavy-duty construction provides the
structural rigidity required to contain the high cylinder pressures
generated by the direct injection combustion of a large single piston.
The cylinder liner is cast directly into the block, featuring a
replaceable or integrated design typical for industrial engines of this
class. The crankcase is integral with the cylinder block, housing the
crankshaft and the forced lubrication system.
Crankshaft: Forged or high-grade cast iron, designed to withstand heavy
torsional loads, supported by two or three main bearings. Connecting
Rods: Forged steel construction with a precisely machined mating
surface.
Pistons: Cast aluminum alloy with anodized ring grooves, designed for
the thermal load of direct injection combustion. Balancer System:
Dual-shaft balancer system integrated into the crankcase to counteract
the primary and secondary inertia forces of the large single-piston
design.
The cylinder head is constructed from cast iron, bolted to the cylinder
block. Valvetrain: Overhead valve (OHV) configuration with pushrods and
rocker arms, actuated by a camshaft located in the cylinder block. The
design operates 2 valves per cylinder (1 intake, 1 exhaust).
Valve Clearance (Cold): Intake: 0.15 - 0.25 mm (0.006 - 0.010 in);
Exhaust: 0.15 - 0.25 mm (0.006 - 0.010 in). Camshaft Drive: Gear-driven
system. The crankshaft gear drives the camshaft gear and the injection
pump gear directly, providing precise and maintenance-free timing.
The fuel system is a mechanical direct injection system. Injection Pump:
Bosch-type in-line injection pump, driven by the engine’s gear train. It
provides precise fuel metering for efficient combustion. Fuel Injectors:
Multi-hole nozzle type, mounted in the cylinder head.
Injection Timing: Adjustable. Standard setting is specified in the
technical service manual for the specific application. Fuel Filter:
Cartridge or spin-on type with integral water sedimenter. Fuel
requirement: Diesel fuel meeting ASTM D975 No. 1-D or No. 2-D.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, fully pressurized system
utilizing a trochoid-type oil pump.
Oil Pump Type: Trochoid pump driven by the camshaft or gear train.
Recommended Oil Viscosity: SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40, API grade CD or higher.
Oil Capacity (Total system): 3.5 L (3.7 qt)
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on full-flow filter or centrifugal filter
depending on the specific variant.
The cooling system configuration varies by model variant.
TF160H: Thermosiphon hopper tank cooling system. Water circulates via
convection, requiring no water pump.
TF160M: Forced circulation radiator cooling system. This variant
includes a centrifugal water pump driven by the engine’s internal gears
or belt.
Timing Drive: Gear-driven. All auxiliary drives (camshaft, injection
pump, oil pump) are gear-driven, ensuring reliability and precise
timing.
Accessory Drive: Some variants include a front PTO (Power Take-Off)
shaft for belt-driving external equipment such as pumps or generators.
Starting System: Manual hand-crank starting is standard. An optional 12V
electric starter motor is available for TF160M variants.
Governor: Mechanical centrifugal governor integrated with the fuel
injection pump, responsible for maintaining stable engine speed under
fluctuating loads.
Overall Length: Approx. 766 mm (30.16 in)
Overall Width: Approx. 380 mm (15.0 in)
Overall Height: Approx. 621 mm (24.4 in)
Dry Weight (Hopper Model): 140 kg (308 lbs)
Dry Weight (Radiator Model): 145 kg (319 lbs)
Engine Oil and Filter Change: Use API CD or higher grade oil.
Engine Oil and Filter Change: Every 100 hours (severe duty).
Engine Oil and Filter Change: Every 250 hours (normal duty).
Valve Clearance Inspection: Every 250 hours. Adjust if necessary.
Fuel Filter Replacement: Every 200 hours or annually.
Cooling System (M Model): Coolant change every 1,000 hours..
Air Filter Cleaning (Dusty conditions): Check daily, clean every 50
hours.
Injection Timing Check: Periodically, or if hard starting or excessive
smoke occurs.
Cylinder Head Nuts: 98 - 108 Nm (72 - 80 lb-ft)
Connecting Rod Cap Nuts: 58 - 64 Nm (43 - 47 lb-ft)
Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 78 - 88 Nm (58 - 65 lb-ft)
