The Deutz TCD 2012 L06 4V is a 4-cycle inline
6-cylinder turbocharged intercooled diesel engine, part of the advanced
Deutz 2012 series. This engine platform is widely used in agricultural
tractors, combine harvesters, construction equipment, and industrial
machinery, including Fendt 716 Vario and 719 Vario tractors, Deutz-Fahr
6040 combines, and Atlas Copco CA3600 vibratory rollers. The TCD 2012
L06 4V is distinguished by its 4-valve-per-cylinder cylinder head
design, electronic Deutz Common Rail fuel system with injection
pressures up to 1,600 bar, and a wastegate turbocharger with air-to-air
charge air cooling.
The engine features a one-piece gray cast iron cylinder head, an
externally arranged lube oil cooler, and a forced-feed circulation
lubrication system with a full-flow paper-type microfilter. Designed to
meet Tier 3 emission standards, this powerplant delivers a combination
of high power density, low fuel consumption, and extended maintenance
intervals suited for demanding industrial and agricultural applications.
The Deutz TCD 2012 L06 4V is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged
and intercooled, inline 6-cylinder diesel engine. The cylinder
arrangement is vertical and in-line, designed for longitudinal mounting
in tractor frames, combine harvesters, and industrial equipment. The
engine block is constructed from cast iron, while the cylinder head is a
one-piece gray cast iron block type cylinder head.
The valvetrain is an overhead valve (OHV) design with pushrods and
rocker arms, actuated by a camshaft located in the cylinder block. Each
cylinder features four valves - two intake and two exhaust - as
indicated by the "4V" designation in the engine model name. The 24-valve
configuration provides improved volumetric efficiency and allows
centralized fuel injector placement within the combustion chamber.
Displacement is 6.07 liters (370 cu.in), achieved through a bore of
101.0 mm (3.98 in) and a stroke of 126.0 mm (4.96 in). The undersquare
design (stroke longer than bore) promotes high torque output at lower
engine speeds, essential for agricultural and industrial load
acceptance. The compression ratio is 18.0:1.
The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, a standard inline six sequence
providing perfect primary and secondary balance. The rated power output
is 155 kW (208 hp) at 2,400 rpm for Tier 3 configurations. The rated
speed is 2,400 rpm. In agricultural applications, power output is 155 hp
(ECE R24) or 167 hp (EC 97/98) at 2,100 rpm. The maximum torque is 810
Nm (597 lb-ft) at 1,600 rpm. With switched internal EGR (exhaust gas
return), the maximum torque increases to 850 Nm (627 lb-ft).
Specific fuel consumption is 208 g/kWh (0.342 lb/hp-h) at best full load
consumption, referring to diesel with a density of 0.835 kg/dm3 at 15°C.
The combustion process is direct injection. The injection system is the
Deutz Common Rail system with a pump-pipe-nozzle configuration. Two
high-pressure plug pumps with an electronic speed governor (EMR3) manage
fuel delivery. The fuel lift pump is an outer gear pump in belt drive.
The injector is a 7-hole nozzle type. The fuel filter is a replaceable
cartridge element.
The cylinder block is a cast iron, closed-deck design. This construction
provides high rigidity and excellent bore retention under the elevated
thermal and mechanical loads generated by turbocharged operation. The
water jacket surrounds each cylinder bore fully, promoting even cooling
across the engine.
The crankshaft is drop-forged steel. The crankshaft bearings are
bi-metal bearings with one fit bearing. The connecting rod bearings are
four-metal, tri-metal sliding bearings. Connecting rods are drop-forged
steel. The camshaft is manufactured from steel and runs in bi-metal
bearings. The camshaft drive is from the camshaft via straight,
high-toothed spur gears. The piston is a three-ring design with two
compression rings and one oil scraper ring. Piston cooling is oil-cooled
using dedicated spray nozzles directed at the underside of each piston
crown.
The cylinder head is a one-piece gray cast iron block type cylinder head
spanning all six cylinders. The combustion chamber is of the direct
injection type, with a re-entrant bowl machined into the piston crown.
The 24 valves are arranged in a straight line along the cylinder head,
with two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder.
The valve train includes adjustable rocker arms allowing precise valve
clearance setting. Valve seats are fitted with replaceable hardened
inserts. Valve guides are replaceable, extending cylinder head service
life. The cylinder head gasket is a multi-layer steel design capable of
withstanding cylinder pressures generated by the high-pressure common
rail system. Cylinder head tightening specifications are three-stage: 30
Nm, followed by 80 Nm, followed by a 90-degree angle torque.
The fuel system is the Deutz Common Rail electronic high-pressure direct
injection system. A high-pressure fuel pump (using two high-pressure
plug pumps) pressurizes fuel up to 1,600 bar. Pressurized fuel is stored
in a common rail accumulator that supplies all six injectors
simultaneously. The engine control unit (ECU) with electronic speed
governor (EMR3) regulates injection pressure and determines injection
timing and duration based on sensor inputs including crankshaft
position, camshaft position, boost pressure, coolant temperature, and
fuel temperature.
Each cylinder is equipped with an electronically actuated injector
featuring a 7-hole nozzle. The injector is a Bosch unit (part number
0445120067) designed for the TCD 2012 L06 4V engine. The system allows
multiple injection events per cycle (pilot injection, main injection,
and post-injection) for reduced combustion noise, improved fuel
efficiency, and optimized emissions control. The fuel lift pump is an
outer gear pump driven by the belt drive. The fuel filter is a
replaceable cartridge element.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed circulation lubrication system
with a gear-type pump. The oil pump is driven by the crankshaft gear
train. Oil is drawn from the oil pan and passed through the pump before
being routed through a full-flow oil filter. The lubricating oil filter
is a paper-type microfilter as a replaceable cartridge, full-flow type.
Pressurized oil travels to main galleries machined into the cylinder
block, delivering to the crankshaft main bearings and connecting rod
bearings through drilled passages. A separate oil passage directs
pressurized oil upward through the cylinder block and cylinder head to
the rocker shaft assembly. The system includes a pressure relief valve.
The system also supplies pressurized oil to the turbocharger bearing
housing through a dedicated feed line. A drain line returns oil from the
turbocharger to the crankcase. An externally arranged lube oil cooler
maintains stable oil temperature under sustained high loads. The total
oil capacity is 24.0 liters (25.4 US qt).
The cooling system is a thermostatically controlled, pressurized liquid
cooling system with a belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant is
circulated through the cylinder block and cylinder head before passing
through the externally arranged oil cooler and returning to the
radiator. A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain
stable operating temperatures between 80°C and 95°C (176°F to 203°F).
A belt-driven fan draws air through the radiator core. The charge air
cooler (air-to-air type) is separate from the engine coolant circuit,
reducing intake air temperature after turbocharger compression. The
total coolant capacity is 7.3 liters (7.7 US qt) for the engine block
only. Complete system capacity including radiator and hoses depends on
the installation.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: The intake system consists of a dry-type replaceable
paper air filter, a wastegate turbocharger, an air-to-air charge air
cooler (intercooler), and a cast iron intake manifold. The intake system
provides cooled, dense charge air to the cylinders for efficient
combustion and reduced exhaust emissions.
Exhaust System: A cast iron exhaust manifold collects gases from all six
cylinders and feeds the turbocharger turbine inlet. The system includes
an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system on some variants for internal
exhaust gas return to reduce NOx emissions. The engine meets Tier 3
emission standards without requiring a diesel particulate filter.
The engine is equipped with a 12-volt or 24-volt electrical system
depending on the application. The starter motor is an electric
gear-reduction type. The standard alternator is a three-phase
alternator, 14 V / 55 A. The engine control unit (EMR3) provides
electronic governing with diagnostic facilities and CAN-bus optional
connectivity.
Turbocharger System: The turbocharger is a wastegate turbocharger with
charge air cooling (air/air). The wastegate controls maximum boost
pressure. The turbocharger is oil-lubricated from the engine's forced
lubrication system.
