The Yanmar 6EY22ALW is a medium-speed,
four-stroke inline-six marine auxiliary engine specifically designed for
generator set (genset) applications. As the larger evolution within the
EY series, this engine was engineered to provide reliable electrical
power generation aboard ocean-going vessels, including bulk carriers,
container ships, tankers, and large passenger vessels. The Yanmar
6EY22ALW is configured for continuous operation at fixed speeds of 720,
750, or 900 rpm, corresponding to 60 Hz or 50 Hz power output.
The engine’s architecture centers on a robust inline-six cylinder
configuration with direct injection, turbocharging, and a charge air
intercooler. The bore and stroke dimensions - 220 mm and 320 mm
respectively - produce a displacement of 72.98 liters per engine. This
long-stroke design prioritizes thermal efficiency and fuel economy,
allowing the engine to operate on marine diesel oil (MDO) or heavy fuel
oil (HFO) depending on the vessel’s fuel supply system.
The Yanmar 6EY22ALW is certified to IMO Tier II emissions standards in
standard configuration, with aftertreatment options available for Tier
III compliance. The engine is supplied as a complete genset package,
including the generator, base frame, cooling system, and control panel,
with total dry weights ranging from 18,500 kg to 23,200 kg depending on
generator specification.

Rated Speed: 720 rpm for 60 Hz (six-pole generator).
Rated Speed: 750 rpm for 60 Hz (four-pole generator).
Rated Speed: 900 rpm for 50 Hz (four-pole generator).
Mean Effective Pressure: 1.81-2.50 MPa (262-363 psi).
Piston Speed: 7.68-9.60 m/s (25.2-31.5 ft/s).
The cylinder block is manufactured from cast iron using high-strength
alloy formulations. The block incorporates an integral bedplate design,
combining the cylinder block and crankshaft main bearing support
structure into a single casting. This configuration maximizes rigidity
and maintains main bearing alignment under the high cylinder pressures
generated during turbocharged operation.
The cylinder bores are machined directly into the block casting with
replaceable gray iron liners. Each liner is centrifugally cast, machined
to final specification, and installed with a sealing ring arrangement to
prevent coolant leakage into the crankcase. The liner bores are finished
with a plateau honing process that optimizes oil retention and piston
ring sealing. Bore diameter measures 220.0 mm (8.66 in). The piston
stroke is 320.0 mm (12.60 in), yielding a total displacement of 72.98 L
(4,454 cu.in). This long-stroke configuration strongly favors thermal
efficiency and low-speed torque generation, aligning with the
constant-speed generator application.
The crankshaft is forged from chromium-molybdenum steel with
induction-hardened journal surfaces. Seven main bearings support the
crankshaft. Thrust bearings positioned at the center main bearing
control axial crankshaft play. The crankshaft is fitted with
counterweights to balance the reciprocating forces of the six-cylinder
configuration. Connecting rods are forged from high-carbon steel with an
I-beam cross-section and a split big end design. Pistons are
manufactured from high-silicon aluminum alloy with a steel crown ring
carrier to withstand the elevated thermal loads of sustained high-output
operation. The piston ring pack comprises three compression rings and
one oil control ring.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron with a cross-flow
design positioning intake ports on one side and exhaust ports on the
opposite side. Each cylinder has its own individual cylinder head
casting, a modular design that simplifies maintenance and replacement
compared to a single multi-cylinder head casting.
Each cylinder head contains four valves: two intake valves and two
exhaust valves. Intake valve diameter measures 56.0 mm (2.20 in), while
exhaust valve diameter measures 52.0 mm (2.05 in). The exhaust valves
are sodium-filled to enhance heat transfer from the valve head to the
valve guide. The valvetrain utilizes a single overhead camshaft with
pushrods and rocker arms. The camshaft is driven by gears from the
crankshaft.
Valve clearance adjustment is accomplished via threaded adjusters with
locknuts at the rocker arm. Cold valve clearance specifications are as
follows: intake valves, 0.35 mm (0.014 in); exhaust valves, 0.45 mm
(0.018 in). Inspection interval is 1,000 operating hours.
The 6EY22ALW employs a direct injection fuel system with a mechanically
governed in-line injection pump. The injection pump is a plunger-type
unit with individual plunger-and-barrel assemblies for each cylinder,
mounted to the side of the cylinder block and driven by the camshaft
gear train. The pump incorporates an isochronous governor that maintains
constant engine speed under varying generator loads, a requirement for
stable AC power frequency.
Injection timing is adjustable by rotating the injection pump relative
to its drive gear. Static injection timing specification is 12-14
degrees before top dead center (BTDC) for marine diesel oil operation.
For heavy fuel oil operation, injection timing is advanced by 2-3
degrees.
Fuel injectors are of the multi-hole type with five nozzle holes. Nozzle
opening pressure is set to 320-340 bar (4,640-4,930 psi). Injectors are
installed into the cylinder head with a copper sealing washer.
The lubrication system utilizes a forced-feed, full-flow design with a
gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft. A pressure
relief valve integrated into the pump maintains system pressure within
design parameters. Main bearing oil pressure is 4.0-5.0 bar (58-73 psi)
at rated speed.
Total oil capacity is 350 L (370 qt) for engine sump and lubrication
circuit. Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 30 or SAE 40 for marine diesel
oil operation. For heavy fuel oil operation, an alkalinity-matched
cylinder oil is required. Oil pressure specifications require a minimum
of 1.5 bar (22 psi) at warm idle.
The oil filter system includes full-flow replaceable cartridge filters
and a bypass centrifugal oil cleaner (purifier). A liquid-to-oil
tube-type oil cooler utilizes fresh water coolant to stabilize oil
temperature.
The cooling system is a closed-loop fresh water system with a separate
seawater circuit for heat rejection. A centrifugal fresh water pump
circulates coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and oil
cooler. A separate seawater pump draws raw water through a strainer,
then circulates it through the fresh water heat exchanger and the charge
air intercooler before discharge overboard.
The thermostat is a wax-pellet unit with an opening temperature of 78-82
°C (172-180 °F). A bypass circuit allows fresh water circulation within
the engine during warm-up. Total fresh water coolant capacity is 240 L
(254 qt). The heat exchanger is a shell-and-tube design with a
seawater-cooled tube bundle.
Aspiration System: The 6EY22ALW is equipped with a turbocharger
manufactured by Mitsubishi or ABB. The turbocharger is a single-unit
design sized for the constant-speed generator application. A
seawater-cooled charge air intercooler reduces intake air temperature by
40-60 °C (72-108 °F) under sustained boost conditions. Maximum boost
pressure is 2.0-2.5 bar (29-36 psi) absolute depending on load.
Starting System: Compressed air starting is provided. An air starter
motor engages with the flywheel ring gear. Air supply pressure
requirement is 15-30 bar (218-435 psi) with a minimum reservoir capacity
of 500 L (132 gal) for the specified starting sequence.
Governor System: An electronic or hydraulic isochronous governor
maintains constant engine speed under varying generator loads. Speed
droop is adjustable from 0 to 5 percent. The governor receives inputs
from the magnetic pickup sensor on the flywheel housing.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is manufactured from cast iron. An
exhaust gas bypass arrangement may be fitted for emissions control.
