The Volvo Penta MD2030 is a three-cylinder,
naturally aspirated marine diesel engine produced by the Swedish
manufacturer Volvo Penta. As a flagship model within the 2000-series,
this power unit was engineered for medium-sized sailing yachts,
displacement cruisers, and light commercial marine applications where a
balance of power output and compact dimensions is required.
The MD2030 succeeded earlier models in the Volvo Penta lineage, offering
improved refinement, lower vibration levels, and enhanced
serviceability. Marine operators and yacht builders recognized this
engine for its smooth three-cylinder operation, freshwater cooling
system with integrated heat exchanger, and availability with either
reverse gear or saildrive configurations, making it a preferred choice
for sailboats between 32 and 38 feet in length.
The MD2030 engine is a four-stroke, compression-ignition diesel unit
featuring an inline three-cylinder configuration. The engine operates on
a naturally aspirated principle, relying on atmospheric pressure for air
intake without forced induction. The bore and stroke dimensions are
nearly square, a design that provides a balance between torque
characteristics and engine speed capability. The engine employs indirect
injection with a pre-combustion chamber design, promoting smooth
combustion and reduced noise compared to direct injection alternatives.

The cylinder block is constructed from high-grade cast iron, a material
choice that provides exceptional structural rigidity and resistance to
corrosion in the marine environment. The block features a tunnel-type
crankcase design, where the crankshaft is supported by a continuous
bearing surface rather than individual bearing caps, resulting in high
rigidity and reduced vibration transmission to the hull structure.
The cylinder bores are cast directly into the block as integral liners,
eliminating the need for separate replaceable liners and simplifying the
block casting. The crankshaft is manufactured from forged steel and is
supported by the tunnel-type bearing arrangement. The three-cylinder
configuration inherently produces lower vibration levels than
single-cylinder units, with a balance shaft system further reducing
operational harshness.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron and features a
cross-flow design with intake and exhaust ports on opposite sides of the
head. The MD2030 employs indirect fuel injection using a swirl-type
pre-combustion chamber, where the injector sprays fuel into an
antechamber before combustion propagates into the main cylinder. This
design reduces combustion noise and allows for a wider range of fuel
qualities. The valvetrain operates on an overhead valve (OHV)
configuration with a single camshaft located in the cylinder block,
driving the valves through pushrods and rocker arms. Two valves per
cylinder - one intake and one exhaust - are provided.
Valve Arrangement: 2 valves per cylinder (1 intake, 1 exhaust), OHV.
Valve Head Diameter (Intake): 34.0 mm (1.34 in).
Valve Head Diameter (Exhaust): 30.0 mm (1.18 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 7.0 mm (0.28 in) for both intake and exhaust.
Camshaft Drive: Gear-driven from the crankshaft.
Valve Lifters: Mechanical flat tappets.
Combustion Chamber: Pre-combustion chamber (indirect injection) with
swirl-generating geometry.
Valve Clearance Adjustment: Screw-and-locknut adjuster on rocker arms.
The fuel system is an indirect injection design utilizing a mechanical
in-line injection pump. The pump is driven by the engine timing gears
and contains a mechanical governor that maintains engine speed under
varying loads, a critical feature for marine propulsion where propeller
load changes with vessel resistance. Each cylinder has a dedicated
pumping element within the injection pump. High-pressure fuel lines
deliver fuel to the mechanical injectors mounted in the cylinder head. A
manual primer lever on the fuel feed pump facilitates bleeding air from
the system after filter changes. The fuel system includes a spin-on
primary fuel filter with an integral water separator.
Injection Pump Type: In-line mechanical with individual pumping elements
per cylinder.
Governor Type: Mechanical centrifugal governor.
Injector Type: Mechanical pintle-type with opening pressure of 12.0 MPa
(1740 psi).
Injection Timing: 12°-14° before top dead center.
Fuel Feed Pump: Mechanical diaphragm type with integral manual primer
lever.
Fuel Filter: Spin-on type with integral water separator and replaceable
element.
Injection Order: 1-2-3.
Fuel Type: Marine diesel fuel meeting EN 590 specification.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, wet-sump design engineered
for marine operating conditions, including sustained operation at
varying angles of inclination encountered in sailing vessels. A
gear-type oil pump, driven directly from the crankshaft via a gear
train, draws oil from the cast aluminum oil pan through a strainer-type
pickup tube.
The oil is pressurized and directed through a full-flow spin-on oil
filter before circulating through main oil galleries to the crankshaft
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and valve
mechanism. The system incorporates a pressure relief valve to maintain
oil pressure within operating limits. The oil pan is designed with
internal baffles to maintain oil pickup during vessel heeling.
Oil Capacity (with filter): 3.5 L (3.7 qt).
Oil Capacity (without filter): 3.0 L (3.2 qt).
Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 15W-40, 20W-50; API CF, CF-4, or CG-4.
Oil Pressure (Rated Speed): 300-400 kPa (3.0-4.0 bar; 44-58 psi).
Oil Pressure (Hot Idle): 70 kPa minimum (0.7 bar; 10 psi).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on, full-flow with replaceable cellulose or
synthetic element.
The MD2030 features a thermostat-controlled freshwater cooling system
with an integrated heat exchanger, a design that isolates the engine
block from direct contact with seawater. An engine-driven centrifugal
fresh water pump circulates coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder
head, and heat exchanger.
A separate seawater pump, mounted on the front of the engine, draws
seawater through a through-hull fitting, passes it through the heat
exchanger to absorb heat from the freshwater circuit, and discharges it
into the exhaust system. The heat exchanger is a tubular type with a
removable bundle for cleaning. An integrated expansion tank maintains
system pressure and accommodates coolant expansion.
Coolant Capacity (freshwater circuit): 3.5 L (3.7 qt).

bundle.

injected into the exhaust elbow to cool exhaust gases before they enter
the rubber exhaust hose and waterlock/silencer.

The Volvo Penta MD2030 engine was utilized exclusively in marine
propulsion applications, with no automotive or industrial applications
outside the marine sector.
Sailing Yachts (32-38 feet): Extensively installed as the primary
inboard diesel engine in production sailboats from Bavaria Yachts
(Bavaria 32, 34, 36), Beneteau (Oceanis 323, 331, 343), Jeanneau (Sun
Odyssey 32, 34.2, 36.2), and Hallberg-Rassy (HR 31, 34). The compact
dimensions and low vibration of the three-cylinder configuration made
this engine a preferred choice in the medium-sized sailing yacht
segment.
Small Motor Cruisers: Fitted in small displacement motor cruisers and
semi-displacement launches requiring approximately 20-30 hp of
propulsion power.
Light Commercial Vessels: Installed as auxiliary power in small fishing
boats, pilot vessels, and workboats where diesel reliability and fuel
efficiency are required.
Saildrive Configuration (120S): The 120S saildrive variant is specified
for sailboats where reduced noise and vibration transmission through the
hull is desired. The saildrive unit incorporates a vertical drive shaft,
a bevel gear set, and a propeller mounted directly beneath the hull.
Reverse Gear Configuration (MS2): The MS2 reverse gear variant is used
in motor cruisers and commercial vessels where a conventional shaft
drive arrangement is preferred.
