The Isuzu 8PC1 is a heavy-duty, naturally
aspirated V8 diesel engine belonging to the Isuzu P family. This engine
represents a larger-displacement evolution of the 8PA1, with an
increased stroke that delivered significantly higher low-end torque for
demanding applications. Produced throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the
8PC1 powered heavy-duty trucks such as the Isuzu Giga (C-Series), large
buses including the Isuzu Super Cruiser, and various marine and
industrial installations. The engine features a 90-degree V8
architecture with a cast iron block, dry-type cylinder liners, and a
5-bearing crankshaft.
Direct injection and a mechanical in-line injection pump (Bosch P-type)
provide fuel delivery. The naturally aspirated design prioritizes
mechanical simplicity and reliability over maximum power density. For
higher power requirements within the same engine family, Isuzu offered
10-cylinder (10PC1) and 12-cylinder (12PC1) variants derived from this
architecture. The 8PC1 earned a reputation for durability under
sustained high-load conditions, including heavy-haulage operations and
steep-grade climbing.
The Isuzu 8PC1 is a 4-cycle, water-cooled, naturally aspirated,
90-degree V-type diesel engine with overhead valve (OHV) configuration.
The V8 cylinder bank angle of 90 degrees provides inherent primary and
secondary balance without requiring a balance shaft. The engine operates
on the four-stroke principle and is designed for continuous heavy-duty
service.
Engine Type: 4-cycle, 90° V-type, OHV naturally aspirated diesel.
Number of Cylinders: 8 (V8 configuration, 2 banks of 4 cylinders).
Displacement: 12,011 cc (12.0 L, 732.9 cu.in).
Bore x Stroke: 119 mm x 135 mm (4.68 in x 5.31 in).
Compression Ratio: 17.0:1.
Firing Order: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.
Power Output: 240 to 270 hp (179 to 201 kW) at 2600 rpm.
Peak Torque: 810 to 835 Nm (597 to 616 lb-ft) at 1400 rpm.
Rated Speed: 2600 rpm.
Idling Speed: 550 to 600 rpm for manual transmission applications.
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated. Combustion air is drawn through a
dry-type paper air cleaner without any forced induction.
Combustion System: Direct injection. Fuel is injected directly into a
re-entrant combustion bowl machined into the piston crown.
Rotation (flywheel end): Counterclockwise when viewed from the front of
the engine.
The cylinder block is constructed from high-strength cast iron with a
deep-skirt design that extends below the crankshaft centerline. The V8
configuration incorporates a 90-degree bank angle with a siamesed bore
arrangement. The block houses five main bearing bulkheads supporting the
forged steel crankshaft. The cylinder bores utilize replaceable dry-type
cylinder liners.
Each liner is pressed into the parent block bore and finished with a
plateau hone. The dry liner design eliminates coolant contact with the
liner exterior, reducing cavitation erosion risks compared to wet liner
engines. The block includes machined mounting surfaces for the air
compressor, power steering pump, and other accessories on the front gear
train housing. A structural oil pan, fabricated from pressed steel,
attaches to the lower flange of the block.
Two separate cylinder heads are used, one for each cylinder bank. Each
head is a single-piece, cast-iron cross-flow unit covering four
cylinders. The overhead valve (OHV) configuration places the camshaft
within the cylinder block V-valley. Pushrods transfer motion from the
camshaft to the rocker arms. Two valves per cylinder (one intake, one
exhaust) produce a total of 16 valves.
Valve seats are pressed-in, with intake seats made of wear-resistant
iron alloy and exhaust seats of heat-resistant steel alloy. Valve guides
are press-fit. The valvetrain uses mechanical lash adjusters (screw and
locknut type) requiring periodic manual valve clearance adjustment.
Cylinder head gaskets are composite construction with steel fire rings
at each cylinder bore. The intake manifold is centrally mounted in the
V-valley between the cylinder heads, while exhaust manifolds are mounted
on the outer sides of each cylinder head.
The fuel system is a mechanical direct injection design. An in-line
injection pump, Bosch P-type or Isuzu-licensed equivalent, is mounted on
the right side of the cylinder block and driven by the engine gear
train. The pump features one plunger and barrel assembly per cylinder,
arranged in line. A mechanical centrifugal governor integrated into the
pump housing regulates engine speed by controlling fuel rack position. A
manual stop control and a fuel cut-off solenoid are provided.
A gear-type transfer pump, mounted on the injection pump, draws fuel
through a primary fuel filter with a water separator (capacity
approximately 200 cubic cm). High-pressure fuel lines route fuel from
the injection pump to eight mechanical injectors, one per cylinder.
Injector opening pressure is factory-set at 19.6 MPa (2,850 psi). Excess
fuel from the injectors and pump returns to the fuel tank via a
low-pressure return line.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, force-feed circuit
designed for sustained high-load operation. A gear-type oil pump, driven
from the crankshaft nose, draws oil through a strainer from a pressed
steel sump. The sump capacity is enlarged for heavy-duty truck
applications. Oil passes through a full-flow spin-on canister filter
mounted on the side of the block. A bypass valve opens if the filter
becomes restricted.
Pressurized oil then travels to the five main bearings, eight connecting
rod bearings, camshaft bearings, rocker shafts, and valve tappets. A
piston cooling jet system is installed: eight individual nozzles direct
oil at the underside of each piston crown to manage thermal loads. A
water-cooled oil cooler, stacked within the engine coolant circuit, is
integrated into the oil filter housing.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 20.0 to 25.0 L (21.1 to 26.4 qt). The
exact capacity depends on the oil pan design and vehicle chassis.
Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 15W-40 for temperate climates, or SAE 30 for
sustained high ambient temperatures above 30°C (86°F). API
classification CD or higher. Oil Pressure (rated speed, warm engine):
350 to 450 kPa (51 to 65 psi). Oil Pressure (idle, warm engine): Minimum
100 kPa (15 psi).
The cooling system is a pressurized, sealed, thermostatically controlled
circuit. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through
both cylinder banks. The system operates with a bypass circuit that
permits circulation within the block and heads during warm-up. Two
thermostats are used, one for each cylinder bank discharge.
Each thermostat is a wax-pellet, single-stage unit. Coolant exits each
cylinder head through separate thermostat housings, merges in a
crossover pipe, and returns to the radiator top tank. The radiator fan
is belt-driven and may incorporate a viscous fan clutch in some vehicle
applications.
Engine Coolant Capacity (engine only, without radiator): 38.0 L (40.2
qt). Thermostat Opening Temperature (each): 76°C to 80°C (169°F to
176°F) for standard tropical climates. A 82°C (180°F) thermostat is
available for temperate regions. Thermostat Fully Open Temperature: 95°C
(203°F). Radiator Pressure Cap Rating: 0.9 bar (13 psi).
Recommended Coolant: Ethylene glycol antifreeze mixed 50% with distilled
water. Supplemental coolant additive (SCA) required for wet liner
protection; however, note that the 8PC1 uses dry liners, reducing but
not eliminating cavitation risk at the water pump and block passages.
Electrical System: 24-volt negative ground. The system includes a
gear-reduction starter motor rated at 7.5 kW and a belt-driven
alternator with 45 to 60 amp output. Two 12-volt batteries are connected
in series.
Starting Aid: An intake air grid heater (electric resistance type) or a
thermostart flame-type heater for cold climates. Activation is automatic
below 5°C (41°F) via a temperature switch.
Governor: Mechanical, centrifugal-type governor integrated into the
in-line injection pump. Provides speed control from idle to maximum
rated load. A separate pneumatic or electric governor may be fitted for
marine or generator applications.
Air Cleaner: Dry-type, two-stage paper element filter with a dust
evacuation valve. A restriction indicator (mechanical pop-up type) is
mounted on the air cleaner housing.
Exhaust System: Dual exhaust manifolds, one per cylinder bank. A single
exhaust pipe may merge the two banks, or separate pipes may be used for
chassis clearance. A muffler with 5-inch (127 mm) inlet/outlet diameter
is standard for truck applications.
Compressed Air System (truck applications): A gear-driven
single-cylinder air compressor (Bendix or Isuzu equivalent) mounted on
the front gear train. Compressor output: 400 to 500 liters per minute at
governed engine speed.
Dry Weight (without flywheel, starter, alternator, or air compressor):
780 kg (1,719 lb).
Overall Length (front pulley to flywheel face): 1,220 mm (48.0 in).
Overall Width (exhaust manifold outer left to exhaust manifold outer
right): 850 mm (33.5 in).
Overall Height (oil pan bottom to rocker cover top): 1,050 mm (41.3 in).
Crankshaft Centerline Height (from bottom of oil pan rail): 380 mm (15.0
in).
Oil Change Interval: 10,000 km (6,200 mi) or 250 hours for heavy-duty
truck operation. Reduce to 5,000 km (3,100 mi) or 125 hours for severe
conditions such as sustained high ambient temperatures, dusty
environments, or frequent stop-start operation. Oil Filter Replacement:
