General Technical Data
The Honda F18B2 is a 1.8-liter inline-four, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine developed for European and select international variants of the Honda Accord during the late 1990s. Designed as a balance between fuel efficiency, reliability, and moderate performance, the F18B2 uses an aluminum cylinder head paired with a cast-iron block. This combination provides strong structural durability with excellent thermal stability.
The engine employs a single overhead camshaft
configuration with Honda's VTEC system depending on calibration. It is
known for smooth running, long-term dependability, and low operating
cost. The firing order is 1-3-4-2, ensuring balanced firing impulses and
smooth operation across the usable RPM range. While not intended as a
high-output performance engine, it excels at providing predictable
torque, clean emissions, and efficient daily operation.
The F18B2 displaces 1849 cc (1.849 liters / 112.8 cubic inches). Bore is
85.0 mm (3.35 inches), and stroke is 81.5 mm (3.21 inches), producing a
long-stroke layout optimized for mid-range torque. Compression ratio
averages approximately 9.2 to 1. Power output is typically around 136
horsepower (101 kW / 138 PS) at roughly 6000 rpm. Maximum torque is
about 124 lb-ft (168 Nm) at around 5000 rpm. Idle speed is set between
650 and 750 rpm.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings for structural rigidity. Aluminum pistons with a three-ring pack provide effective sealing and efficient combustion. The aluminum head houses the SOHC valvetrain with rocker arms actuating sixteen valves. Valve timing is belt-driven using a reinforced rubber timing belt.
Fuel System
Fuel delivery is handled by Honda's programmed multi-point fuel injection system. An in-tank electric fuel pump supplies fuel to a fine-element filter and then to the fuel rail feeding four solenoid-type injectors.
Fuel pressure is regulated at approximately 300 kPa (43 lbs per square inch). The ECU controls injector timing and duration using input from the throttle position sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, intake air temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, and engine coolant temperature sensor.
The throttle body is cable-operated and includes idle air control circuits. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKI (91 to 92 RON). Proper injector maintenance ensures stable combustion and optimal fuel economy.
Lubrication System
0The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump type using a crankshaft-mounted trochoid oil pump. Oil is drawn through a pickup screen, pressurized, and routed through a spin-on full-flow filter. Pressurized oil reaches the crankshaft bearings, connecting rod journals, camshaft journals, and valvetrain components.
Oil capacity with filter is approximately 4.0 to 4.3 liters (4.2 to 4.5 US quarts). Recommended viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on climate. Typical cruising oil pressure ranges from 300 to 400 kPa (44 to 58 psi). A PCV system ensures proper crankcase ventilation.
Cooling System
The engine uses a liquid-cooled system with a belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulating coolant through the block, cylinder head, radiator, and heater core. Thermostat opening temperature is around 82 C (180 degrees F) and full opening occurs near 95 C (203 degrees F). Cooling system capacity generally ranges from 6.0 to 6.8 liters (6.3 to 7.2 US quarts).
Radiator cap pressure is usually between 88 and 108 kPa. A 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol and distilled water is recommended. Coolant replacement is advised every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake system includes a sealed airbox, dry paper filter, and aluminum intake manifold designed for efficient airflow. Air filter replacement is recommended every 20,000 km (12,400 miles). The exhaust system uses a cast-iron manifold feeding into a catalytic converter and downstream resonators and mufflers. Oxygen sensors provide feedback to maintain proper air-fuel mixture during closed-loop operation.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is controlled by a distributor assembly mounted to the head. The distributor contains the coil, sensor pickups, and advance mechanisms. Spark plug specification includes NGK or Denso equivalents with a gap of 1.1 mm (0.043 inches).
Replacement is recommended every 20,000 to 40,000 km depending on plug type. The alternator generates approximately 80 to 90 amperes. The starter motor is a reduction-gear type. System voltage is 12 volts.
Valve Timing and Drive Mechanism
A reinforced rubber timing belt synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft. Replacement interval is 90,000 to 100,000 km (56,000 to 62,000 miles). A spring-loaded tensioner maintains belt tension. Timing alignment requires precision matching of cam and crank pulley marks.
