General Technical Data
The Honda D15B7 is a 1.5-liter inline-four, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine developed as part of Honda's long-running D-series family during the early to mid 1990s. Installed primarily in Honda Civic models, the D15B7 gained recognition for its dependable performance, fuel efficiency, and low running cost.
The engine features a cast-iron block paired with an aluminum cylinder head, providing an ideal balance of durability and thermal stability. Its single overhead camshaft design with four valves per cylinder offers smooth operation and easy maintenance.
The firing order is 1-3-4-2, and the engine is
known for stable combustion, moderate torque, and reliable long-term
operation. Although not intended for high-performance applications, the
D15B7 excels as a highly practical and efficient commuter engine.
The D15B7 displaces 1493 cc (1.493 liters / 91.1 cubic inches). It uses
a bore of 75.0 mm (2.95 inches) and a stroke of 84.5 mm (3.33 inches),
forming a mildly undersquare layout that enhances torque in the low and
mid RPM ranges. Compression ratio averages around 9.2 to 1. Power output
typically reaches 102 horsepower (76 kW / 103 PS) at approximately 5900
rpm.
Peak torque is roughly 98 lb-ft (133 Nm) at around 4000 rpm. Idle speed is generally set between 700 and 750 rpm. The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings to stabilize rotating mass and reduce vibration. Aluminum alloy pistons with a three-ring package provide effective sealing.
Forged steel connecting rods promote long-term durability. The aluminum cylinder head houses a SOHC valvetrain actuating sixteen valves through rocker arms. Valve timing is driven by a reinforced rubber timing belt.
Fuel System
The D15B7 uses Honda’s programmed multi-point fuel injection system. An electric in-tank pump supplies fuel through a filter to the fuel rail feeding four solenoid injectors. Fuel pressure is regulated at approximately 270 to 300 kPa (39 to 44 psi).
The ECU monitors data from the manifold absolute pressure sensor, throttle position sensor, intake air temperature sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor, and oxygen sensor to determine fuel delivery. The throttle body is mechanically actuated and includes idle air control functions. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with a minimum rating of 87 AKI (91–92 RON).
Lubrication System
Lubrication is handled by a full-pressure wet-sump design. A crankshaft-driven trochoid pump draws oil from the sump, routing it through a pickup screen, forcing it through a full-flow spin-on filter, and distributing pressurized oil to the crankshaft bearings, connecting rod journals, camshaft journals, and rocker assemblies.
Oil capacity, including filter, is typically 3.5 to 3.7 liters (3.7 to 3.9 US quarts). Recommended viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on environmental conditions. Normal cruising oil pressure ranges from 300 to 400 kPa (44 to 58 psi). The PCV system ensures stable crankcase ventilation.
Cooling System
Cooling is provided by a liquid-cooled, forced-circulation design. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the block, head, radiator, and heater core. Thermostat opening temperature is approximately 82 C (180 degrees F) and full open occurs near 95 C (203 degrees F).
Cooling system capacity ranges from 4.8 to 5.3 liters (5.1 to 5.6 US quarts). Radiator cap pressure varies between 88 and 108 kPa. A 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol and distilled water is recommended. Coolant replacement interval is every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two years.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake system includes a sealed airbox, dry paper filter, ducting, and an aluminum intake manifold tuned for steady mid-range torque. Air filter replacement is recommended every 20,000 km (12,400 miles).
The exhaust system uses a cast-iron manifold connected to a catalytic converter followed by resonators and mufflers. Oxygen sensor feedback regulates mixture under closed-loop operation.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is controlled by a distributor mounted to the cylinder head, driven by the camshaft. The distributor contains the ignition coil, pickup sensors, and mechanical advance components. Spark plug specification includes NGK or Denso equivalents with a 1.1 millimeter (0.043 inch) gap.
Replacement interval ranges from 20,000 to 40,000 km depending on plug material. The alternator produces around 70 to 80 amperes. A reduction-gear starter motor provides reliable cranking. System voltage is 12 volts.
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
A reinforced rubber timing belt synchronizes crankshaft and camshaft rotation. Replacement is recommended every 90,000 to 100,000 km (56,000 to 62,000 miles). Belt tension is controlled by a spring-loaded tensioner.
Proper alignment requires matching timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft sprocket. The D15B7 is considered non-interference, but belt failure can still cause operational problems.
