The Honda D14Z2 engine belongs to Honda’s
fuel-efficient D-series family and was primarily installed in
European-market sixth-generation Honda Civic models produced from the
late 1990s into the early 2000s. Designed as an economical SOHC
1.4-liter powerplant using multi-point fuel injection, the D14Z2
emphasizes reliability, low emissions, fuel efficiency, smooth
operation, and minimal running costs.
Although not intended as a performance engine, it provides predictable
torque, excellent cold-start characteristics, and the long-term
durability that Honda engines are famous for. Its lightweight aluminum
head and block, efficient combustion chambers, stable cooling layout,
balanced rotating assembly, and simple valvetrain make it easy to
maintain and exceptionally long-lived.
The D14Z2’s engineering reflects Honda’s commitment to mechanical
simplicity, efficiency, and long-term serviceability. The engine uses an
aluminum block with cast-iron cylinder sleeves for optimal heat
dissipation and stable wear characteristics. The bore and stroke
combination of 75.0 mm and 79.0 mm produces a slightly long-stroke
geometry that favors mid-range responsiveness, good cylinder filling at
low rpm, and excellent everyday drivability.
The forged-steel crankshaft is supported by five main bearings, ensuring
low vibration and dependable rotation even at high mileage. Connecting
rods are forged steel units, chosen for their resistance to fatigue and
bending stresses. Lightweight aluminum pistons with friction-reducing
skirts maintain smooth operation and limit heat absorption. The cylinder
head is a SOHC crossflow design with four valves per cylinder-two intake
and two exhaust. Valve actuation takes place through rocker arms driven
by the single overhead camshaft.
Airflow management is optimized for fuel efficiency, stable combustion,
and strong swirl patterns at lower engine speeds. The combustion chamber
shape promotes efficient flame propagation while limiting detonation
risk. Honda engineered the D14Z2 to provide smooth, quiet,
vibration-free operation ideal for daily commuting and urban driving,
delivering reliability over hundreds of thousands of km without major
internal repairs.
Engine type: Inline-4, SOHC, 16-valve, naturally aspirated
Displacement: 1,396 cc (85.2 cu in)
Bore: 75.0 mm (2.95 in)
Stroke: 79.0 mm (3.11 in)
Compression ratio: approx. 9.0:1 to 9.2:1
Power output: approx. 90–92 hp (66–68 kW) at ~6,300 rpm
Torque output: approx. 116–120 Nm (85–89 lb-ft) at ~4,600 rpm

Firing order: 1-3-4-2
The aluminum head and sleeved-aluminum block provide a balanced thermal
profile. The crankshaft’s five-bearing support increases longevity and
reduces torsional vibration. The rotating assembly uses low-friction
rings and pressured oiling to maintain compression and stability
throughout the service life.
The D14Z2 uses Honda’s PGM-FI multi-point electronic fuel injection.
Fuel is supplied by an electric in-tank pump, filtered through a
fine-element filter, and delivered to a high-pressure rail feeding four
injectors. Fuel pressure: 43–47 psi (300–325 kPa).
ECU sensors include:
- MAP sensor
- TPS sensor
- IAT sensor
- ECT sensor
- Primary oxygen sensor
- Atmospheric pressure sensor
- Crank/cam sensors (in distributor)
The PGM-FI system enables smooth warm-ups, accurate fuel metering, and
reliable emissions control.
The lubrication system uses a full-pressure wet-sump layout with a
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump.
Oil passes through a spin-on filter and
into pressurized galleries feeding:
- Main bearings
- Rod bearings
- Camshaft journals
- Rocker arms
- Cylinder walls
Oil capacity: 3.5–3.7 L (3.7–3.9 US qt)
Viscosity: 5W-30 or 10W-30 recommended
Oil pressure: 50–70 psi (345–480 kPa)
Idle pressure: >10 psi (69 kPa)
PCV system ensures clean crankcase ventilation and consistent internal
pressure.
Cooling is via a liquid-based forced-circulation system using a
belt-driven water pump. Coolant flows through block passages, head
cooling jackets, radiator, and heater core.
Thermostat characteristics:
- Begins opening: 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open: 95°C (203°F)
Cooling system capacity: 4.8–5.2 L (5.1–5.5 US qt)
Radiator cap pressure: 1.1 bar (16 psi)
Coolant mixture: 50% ethylene glycol / 50% distilled water
An electric radiator fan is controlled by a thermal switch or ECU.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake manifold is aluminum and optimized for low-to-mid-range
torque. Throttle body diameter typically ranges from 52–56 mm.
Air intake includes:
- Resonated airbox
- Dry-element air filter
- Flow-optimized inlet duct
Exhaust manifold is cast iron for durability.
Exhaust flow passes through:
- Primary oxygen sensor
- Catalytic converter
- Resonator
- Muffler
This ensures quiet operation and emissions compliance.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is electronically controlled and distributor-based.
The distributor contains:
- Internal ignition coil
- Igniter module
- Crank angle sensor
- Cam angle sensor
Spark plugs: NGK BKR6E-11 or equivalent
Gap: 1.0–1.1 mm (0.039–0.043 in)
The ECU controls spark advance based on load, rpm, coolant temperature,
throttle input, and emissions requirements.
Electrical system voltage: 12 V
Alternator output: 70–80 A
Starter motor: reduction gear type
Proper grounding between engine, chassis, and battery ensures correct
ECU and sensor operation.
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
The SOHC camshaft is driven by a reinforced rubber timing belt. The belt
also drives the water pump. A spring-loaded tensioner maintains belt
tension. Timing belt service interval: 90,000–100,000 km (55,000–62,000
mi). Different trims may include hydraulic lash adjusters; others
require mechanical valve clearance adjustment.
Length: 600 mm (23.6 in)
Width: 520 mm (20.5 in)
Height: 630 mm (24.8 in)
Dry weight: 110–120 kg (243–265 lb)
Service intervals:
- Oil + filter: 5,000–7,500 km
- Air filter: 20,000–30,000 km
- Fuel filter: 40,000–50,000 km
- Spark plugs: 20,000–30,000 km
