The Honda D14A4 engine is a member of the
well-known Honda D-series family, which powered millions of Honda Civics
throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Produced mainly for the
European-market sixth-generation Honda Civic, the D14A4 was engineered
to meet the needs of everyday drivers seeking reliability, fuel
efficiency, and low running costs. It is a simple, durable, economical,
and easy-to-maintain SOHC (single-overhead-cam) gasoline engine
featuring a 1.4-liter displacement, multi-point fuel injection, and a
lightweight aluminum cylinder head.
The D14A4 was designed to deliver balanced performance for commuting and
daily use. Though modest in power output compared to larger D- and
B-series engines, it excels in drivability, mechanical longevity, and
fuel efficiency. Its compact size, light weight, smooth operation, and
low vibration levels made it an ideal match for the Civic models it
powered. It represents Honda’s commitment to intelligent
engineering-optimized combustion, careful port design, reliable ignition
management, and efficient fuel delivery.
While not intended for racing or performance applications, the D14A4
remains popular with Honda enthusiasts, restorers, and owners who value
a sturdy, simple, economical engine. Many examples continue to operate
reliably after hundreds of thousands of km, a testament to Honda’s
engineering quality.
The Honda D14A4 is a four-stroke, inline-four gasoline engine with a
displacement of 1,396 cc (85.2 cubic inches). It uses a single overhead
camshaft with 16 valves-two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder.
It is part of the later generation of D-series engines that incorporate
electronic fuel injection and improved combustion efficiency.
Bore is 75.0 mm (2.95 in) and stroke is 79.0 mm (3.11 in), producing a
relatively long-stroke design that improves torque delivery and low-rpm
drivability. Compression ratio generally ranges from 9.0:1 to 9.2:1,
depending on market specifications.
Factory power output: 90–92 PS (66–68 kW / 88–91 hp) at approx. 6,300
rpm
Factory torque rating: 116–120 Nm (85–89 lb-ft) at approx. 4,600 rpm
Idle speed: 650–750 rpm
Redline: approx. 6,800 rpm
Fuel cutoff: approx. 6,900 rpm
Firing order: 1-3-4-2.
The engine block is cast aluminum with cast-iron cylinder liners. These
liners provide hard wearing surfaces for long service life. The
crankshaft is a cast-steel, five-main-bearing design that ensures smooth
rotation and stability. Connecting rods are forged steel with press-fit
wrist pins, while pistons are lightweight aluminum alloy with
low-friction coated skirts.
The aluminum cylinder head features a crossflow pattern and compact
pent-roof combustion chambers. The SOHC valvetrain operates through
rocker arms. Depending on production year, the D14A4 may use hydraulic
lash adjusters or conventional adjustable rocker arms. The valvetrain is
designed for quiet operation and long-term reliability.
The intake ports are tuned for high air velocity at low rpm, improving
throttle response and fuel economy. The exhaust ports encourage
efficient scavenging without sacrificing emissions performance.
The Honda D14A4 uses Honda’s PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) system,
a proven multi-point electronic injection design.
Fuel delivery consists of:
- Electric in-tank fuel pump
- Fine-element fuel filter
- High-pressure steel fuel rail
- Multi-point fuel injectors
Fuel pressure: approx. 43–47 psi (300–325 kPa) regulated by a
vacuum-controlled return-type regulator.
The ECU monitors sensor inputs including:
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT)
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT)
- Primary oxygen sensor (for closed-loop mixture control)
- Atmospheric pressure sensor
- Crankshaft/cam position signals (inside the distributor)
The system maintains precise fuel metering under all load and
temperature conditions. Recommended fuel: unleaded gasoline, 91–95 RON
(87–91 AKI).
The D14A4 uses a full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system. The
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump draws oil from the sump via a
screened pickup and routes it through a spin-on oil filter before
distributing it throughout the engine.
Oil lubricates:
- Main bearings
- Rod bearings
- Camshaft journals
- Rocker arms
- Valve stems
- Cylinder walls
Oil capacity: approx. 3.5–3.7 liters (3.7–3.9 US qt)
Recommended oil: 5W-30 or 10W-30 (10W-40 for high-temperature regions)
Operating oil pressure: 50–70 psi (345–480 kPa)
Idle oil pressure: >10 psi (69 kPa)
The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system maintains crankcase
pressure equilibrium and reduces oil vapor emissions.
Cooling is accomplished through a liquid-cooled, forced-circulation
design using a belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Thermostat begins
opening at approx. 82°C (180°F). Fully open at approx. 95°C (203°F).
Coolant capacity: approx. 4.8–5.2 liters (5.1–5.5 US qt). Radiator cap
pressure: approx. 1.1 bar (16 psi).
The cooling system includes:
- Radiator
- Coolant passages in block and head
- Thermostat
- Heater core
- Electric radiator fan (thermoswitch or ECU-controlled)
Coolant mixture should be 50% ethylene glycol and 50% distilled water.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake manifold is cast aluminum with runners tuned for low- and
mid-rpm torque. The throttle body measures between 52 mm and 56 mm
depending on model year.
Air enters through:
- Resonated airbox
- Fresh-air duct
- Dry-element paper air filter
The exhaust manifold is cast iron for durability.
Exhaust flow passes through:
- Primary oxygen sensor
- Catalytic converter
- Resonator
- Rear muffler
These components emphasize emissions control and quiet operation rather
than performance.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is managed electronically through a distributor-based system.
The distributor contains:
- Internal ignition coil
- Igniter (power transistor)
- Crank position sensor
- Cam position sensor
The ECU calculates spark advance based on throttle input, rpm, coolant
temperature, and load. Base timing can be manually adjusted by rotating
the distributor after placing the ECU in timing-set mode.
Standard spark plugs: NGK BKR6E-11 or equivalent
Spark plug gap: 1.0–1.1 mm (0.039–0.043 in)
Proper ignition maintenance is critical for fuel efficiency and smooth
acceleration.
Electrical system voltage: 12 V
Alternator output: approx. 70–80 A
Starter motor: reduction-gear type
Proper grounding between engine, chassis, and battery is essential to
avoid ECU and sensor irregularities.
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
The single overhead camshaft is driven by a reinforced rubber timing
belt. The belt also drives the water pump. A spring-loaded tensioner
maintains proper belt tension. Timing belt replacement interval:
90,000–100,000 km (55,000–62,000 mi).
For variants without hydraulic lash adjusters, valve clearance must be
checked periodically. Timing marks are stamped into the crank pulley and
camshaft sprocket for accurate alignment during belt servicing.
Length: 600 mm (23.6 in)
Width: 520 mm (20.5 in)
Height: 630 mm (24.8 in)
Dry weight: 110–120 kg (243–265 lb) depending on accessory
configuration.
Recommended maintenance intervals:
- Engine oil + filter: every 5,000–7,500 km (3,000–4,600 mi)
