The Honda B20A7 engine represents the most
powerful, refined, and performance-oriented evolution of Honda’s early
B20A family-a lineage that predates the later, more globally recognized
B-series VTEC engines such as the B16A, B18C1, and B18C5. Produced
primarily for European-market Honda Prelude 2.0 EX/2.0i-16 models, the
B20A7 stands at the top of the pre-VTEC B20 range, distinguished by a
significantly higher compression ratio, aggressively tuned camshafts,
improved port flow, and ECU calibration optimized for responsive torque
and enhanced upper-rpm performance.
Although the B20A7 does not feature VTEC, it demonstrates how Honda’s
engineers extracted impressive naturally aspirated performance through
sophisticated mechanical design rather than electronically controlled
cam-phasing. With its robust cast-iron block, crossflow aluminum DOHC
16-valve cylinder head, pent-roof combustion chambers, tuned intake and
exhaust structure, and precision-machined internals, the engine delivers
a smooth, torquey, and engaging driving experience. It is particularly
notable for its strong mid-range pull and clean high-rpm
operation-qualities that make the B20A7 a favorite among enthusiasts
restoring classic Preludes.
The B20A7 holds historical importance as a bridge between Honda’s
earlier DOHC engines and the later high-revving B-series VTEC units.
While mechanically incompatible with later B-series engines due to its
unique block architecture, lean angle, and mounting pattern, the B20A7
nevertheless shares the same commitment to engineering precision,
durability, and responsiveness that characterize all Honda performance
engines.
The Honda B20A7 is a four-stroke, inline-four gasoline engine featuring
dual overhead camshafts and a 16-valve crossflow aluminum cylinder head.
Total displacement is 1,958 cc (119.5 cubic inches), achieved through an
81.0 mm (3.19 in) bore and a 95.0 mm (3.74 in) stroke. This long-stroke
configuration provides strong mid-range torque and stable combustion
characteristics, while still allowing respectable top-end breathing.
Compression ratio is approximately 10.5:1, significantly higher than
that of the B20A5 and B20A base variants. This higher compression
improves thermal efficiency, low-speed torque, fuel economy, and
throttle response.
Factory power and torque figures:
- Maximum power: approx. 150 horsepower (112 kW) at 6,100 rpm
- Maximum torque: approx. 140 lb-ft (190 Nm) at 4,500–4,800 rpm
Idle speed: approx. 750 ± 50 rpm
Redline: approx. 6,800 rpm
Firing order: 1-3-4-2
The engine block is cast iron with integrated cylinder liners and a
forward lean angle (~18–20 degrees) specific to early B20A engines,
chosen to optimize vehicle packaging in the Prelude’s slanted-nose
engine bay.
The forged steel crankshaft is supported by five main bearings, ensuring
smooth rotation and durability under prolonged high-rpm use. Connecting
rods are forged steel with full-floating wrist pins, while pistons are
cast aluminum alloy with friction-reducing skirt coatings. The piston
ring pack includes two compression rings and one oil-control ring,
designed to stabilize sealing under both cold and high-temperature
conditions.
The aluminum DOHC cylinder head employs
four valves per cylinder:
- Intake valves: approx. 33 mm (1.30 in)
- Exhaust valves: approx. 28 mm (1.10 in)
Valve actuators are shim-over-bucket mechanical lifters-ideal for
high-rpm stability and precise timing control. Combustion chambers
follow a compact pent-roof design, which promotes efficient swirl, rapid
flame propagation, and detonation resistance even at high compression.
Port geometry emphasizes both flow velocity and high-rpm breathing,
giving the B20A7 an unusually wide usable powerband for a non-VTEC
engine.
The B20A7 uses Honda’s proven PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection)
multi-point electronic injection system. Fuel is drawn from the tank by
an electric in-tank pump and routed through a fine-element fuel filter
before reaching the fuel rail.
Fuel pressure is maintained at approx. 40–47 psi (275–325 kPa) by a
vacuum-referenced regulator. Excess fuel is returned to the tank.
Engine management relies on inputs from:
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Oxygen sensor (for closed-loop operation)
- Atmospheric pressure sensor
- Crank/cam position signals from sensors inside the distributor
Premium unleaded fuel is recommended, with a minimum of 95 RON (91 AKI)
preferred for optimal anti-knock resistance.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump configuration. A
crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump draws oil through a screened pickup,
pressurizes it, and routes it through a spin-on full-flow filter before
distributing it through internal galleries.
Oil capacity: approx. 4.0 liters (4.2 US quarts)
Recommended viscosity: SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 (hot climates: 10W-40)
Operating oil pressure: 50–70 psi (345–480 kPa) at speed
Idle oil pressure: >10 psi (69 kPa)
A PCV valve located on the valve cover ensures proper crankcase
ventilation and reduces oil vapor accumulation.
The cooling system is a liquid-based forced-circulation design with a
belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant flows through the block, the
aluminum cylinder head, radiator, and heater core. Thermostat operation
begins at approx. 82°C (180°F) and reaches full open near 95°C (203°F).
Cooling system capacity: approx. 5.5–6.0 liters (5.8–6.3 US quarts)
Radiator cap pressure: approx. 1.1 bar (16 psi)
Coolant mixture: 50% ethylene glycol, 50% distilled water
The electric cooling fan engages based on a thermal switch, while the
ECU monitors coolant temperature for calibration adjustments.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake manifold is a high-flow aluminum casting engineered for
balanced mid-range torque and high-rpm breathing. Runner lengths and
plenum volume are optimized for velocity and response. The throttle body
measures approx. 58–60 mm.
The airbox contains a dry-element filter and resonator chambers to
reduce noise while maintaining airflow efficiency. The exhaust manifold
is cast iron for durability and thermal stability.
Exhaust gases pass through:
- Oxygen sensor
- Catalytic converter
- Resonator
- Tuned muffler system
The overall layout ensures strong exhaust scavenging without excessive
noise or restriction.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is controlled electronically via a distributor-based system.
Inside the distributor are:
- Internal ignition coil
- Igniter (power transistor)
- Crank angle and cam angle pickup sensors
The ECU calculates spark advance based on rpm, load, coolant
temperature, and throttle input. Base ignition timing is adjustable by
rotating the distributor while the service connector is shorted to lock
the ECU in base-timing mode.
Typical spark plugs: NGK ZFR6F-11 or equivalent
Gap: 1.0–1.1 mm (0.039–0.043 in)
High-tension ignition wires deliver spark energy to each plug.
The B20A7 uses a 12-volt electrical system.
Alternator output: approx. 70–80 amperes
Starter: reduction-gear type
Ground straps between the block, chassis, and battery must remain clean
for stable ECU operation.
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
The dual overhead camshafts are driven by a rubber-reinforced toothed
timing belt. The belt also drives the water pump. A spring-loaded
tensioner maintains consistent belt tension. Timing belt service
interval: 90,000–100,000 km (55,000–62,000 miles). Valve actuation uses
shim-over-bucket lifters.
Valve clearance should be checked periodically to maintain performance
and prevent premature valvetrain wear. Timing marks are located on the
cam pulleys and crank pulley to assist with precise belt installation.
Length: 640 mm (25.2 in)
Width: 580 mm (22.8 in)
Height: 670 mm (26.4 in)
Dry weight: 145–155 kg (320–342 lb) depending on accessory
configuration.
