The Deutz TCD 2.2 L3 is a 4-cycle inline
3-cylinder turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine from the TCD 2.2
series. This engine is designed for demanding industrial applications
requiring high power density, low emissions compliance, and extended
maintenance intervals. The TCD designation indicates Turbocharged Common
Rail Diesel. The L3 designation indicates 3 cylinders in inline
configuration.
The engine incorporates a high-efficiency common rail injection system,
a DOC for Tier 4 or DPF for Stage V emissions compliance, and an
extended 1000-hour oil change interval. The robust engine design is
based on the successful TCD 2.2 platform, offering optimized performance
at low fuel consumption.
The Deutz TCD 2.2 L3 represents a modern high-speed diesel architecture
meeting the most stringent emission regulations while maintaining low
operating costs. Its inline 3-cylinder configuration with a 92 mm bore
and 110 mm stroke provides a long stroke design delivering high torque
at low engine speeds, with maximum torque of 280 Nm at 1600 rpm. The
water-cooled system enables consistent thermal management under varying
industrial loads.
The common rail injection system operates at high pressures, enabling
multiple injection events per cycle for reduced combustion noise and
optimized fuel efficiency. The DVERT aftertreatment system uses a DOC
(Tier 4) or DPF (Stage V) for maintenance-free compliance across all
ambient conditions. The maintenance-free valve train and extended
1000-hour oil change intervals reduce machine downtime. The firing order
of 1-2-3 provides balanced power impulses with reduced vibration in the
3-cylinder configuration.

The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron with a deep-skirt
design, providing structural rigidity for sustained industrial
operation. The block utilizes a parent-bore design with cylinder bores
machined directly into the cast iron casting. The cylinder bores are
induction-hardened to resist wear under extended 1000-hour oil change
intervals.
Four main bearings support the crankshaft (3-cylinder engines utilize 4
main bearings). The water jacket surrounds each cylinder with cast-in
coolant passages optimized for uniform thermal distribution. The
camshaft is located within the cylinder block, driven by a gear train or
timing chain depending on the specific variant. The engine mounting
points are positioned on the sides and front of the block.
The piston design is optimized for the high-efficiency common rail
combustion process. The ring pack includes compression rings and an oil
control ring designed for extended oil change intervals up to 1000
hours. The piston crown incorporates the re-entrant combustion bowl with
geometry matched to the injector spray angle.
The connecting rod is manufactured from forged steel, providing strength
for turbocharged diesel combustion pressures. The connecting rod cap is
secured with bolts or torque-to-yield fasteners depending on the
production variant.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron or aluminum alloy
depending on the application and weight requirements. The valvetrain is
maintenance-free, requiring no manual valve lash adjustment throughout
the engine service life. Hydraulic lash adjusters automatically maintain
zero valve clearance.
The combustion system utilizes direct injection with a re-entrant bowl
machined into the piston crown, optimized for the common rail injection
spray pattern. The cylinder head incorporates separate intake and
exhaust ports on opposite sides. The exhaust manifold is designed to
mount the DVERT aftertreatment system directly to the engine for compact
installation.
The engine is equipped with a powerful common rail injection system. A
high-pressure fuel pump delivers fuel to the common rail accumulator at
pressures up to 1,800 bar (26,100 psi). Piezoelectric or high-speed
solenoid injectors provide multiple injection events per combustion
cycle, including pilot injections for reduced combustion noise, main
injection for power delivery, and post-injections for exhaust
temperature management and DPF regeneration.
The engine control unit (ECU) manages injection timing, rail pressure,
and injection duration based on sensor inputs including the mass airflow
sensor, rail pressure sensor, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft
position sensor, and exhaust sensors.
The lubrication system is designed for extended 1000-hour oil change
intervals under standard operating conditions. A gear-type oil pump,
driven by the crankshaft, circulates engine oil through a full-flow
disposable spin-on filter. An optional service-friendly multi-V belt
drive is available for accessory drives.
Oil galleries within the block and cylinder head supply pressurized oil
to the main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
hydraulic lash adjusters, and turbocharger bearing housing. A pressure
relief valve maintains system pressure within specified limits. Total
oil capacity is 6.0 liters (6.3 qt).
The cooling system is water-cooled with forced circulation. A
belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the
cylinder block, cylinder head, turbocharger, and radiator. A wax-type
thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal operating
temperatures for emissions compliance and fuel efficiency.
The cooling system includes a charge air cooler (intercooler) for
reducing intake air temperature after the turbocharger. The engine is
designed for operation in ambient temperatures from -25°C to +45°C with
appropriate coolant specification.
Glow Plug System: The engine is equipped with ceramic or steel glow
plugs for cold-start assistance and post-heat operation. One glow plug
per cylinder is installed in the cylinder head, controlled by the ECU
based on coolant temperature, intake air temperature, and barometric
pressure.
Timing System: Gear-driven camshaft and injection pump from the
crankshaft. This arrangement provides durable, maintenance-free valve
timing.
Turbocharger System: A fixed geometry or variable geometry turbocharger
provides forced induction, depending on emission level and power rating.
An air-to-air or air-to-water charge air cooler (intercooler) reduces
intake air temperature.
DVERT Aftertreatment System: For EPA Tier 4 compliance, a DVERT
oxidation catalyst (DOC) is used. For EU Stage V compliance, a DVERT
particulate filter (DPF) is used. The system enables maintenance-free
operation under all application and ambient conditions.
ECU / Engine Management: Full authority electronic control unit
governing fuel injection, turbocharger boost, EGR operation (if
equipped), and aftertreatment regeneration.
Accessory Drive: Optional service-friendly multi-V belt drive for
alternator, water pump, cooling fan, and other accessories, designed for
easy replacement.
