The Deutz F4L1011F is a 4-cylinder inline
air-cooled diesel engine from the Deutz 1011 series, produced from the
early 1990s through the 2000s. This powerplant was engineered for
heavy-duty applications in construction machinery, agricultural
equipment, industrial pumps, and ground support equipment. The engine is
distinguished by its integrated oil cooling system - an air-cooled
design that circulates oil through an external cooler - eliminating the
need for a liquid coolant system. This configuration improves
reliability in extreme temperatures and reduces maintenance
requirements.
The F4L1011F employs a naturally aspirated direct injection combustion
system with individual injection pumps for each cylinder. The cast iron
crankcase and block-type cylinder head provide the durability required
for continuous industrial operation. The four cylinders are arranged
in-line, with a bore of 91 mm and stroke of 105 mm producing a
displacement of 2.73 L. The compression ratio of 18.5:1 is calibrated
for cold-start capability and efficient combustion. The mechanical
centrifugal governor maintains stable engine speed under varying loads,
while the closed-circuit crankcase breather reduces emissions.
Power output is rated at 44 kW (59.5 hp) at 3,000 rpm for automotive
applications , with continuous ratings available for industrial
equipment such as the Powerscreen MDS 4 density separator and Kaeser
Mobilair M 56 air compressor. Maximum torque is 161 Nm (119 lb-ft) at
1,800 rpm. The engine meets the power requirements of equipment
including the Wirtgen W 350 cold milling machine. The dry weight is 249
kg, with overall dimensions of 710 mm length, 495 mm width, and 703 mm
height.
The F4L1011F operates on a four-stroke diesel cycle with compression
ignition and direct injection. The engine utilizes an inline 4-cylinder
configuration with overhead valves and air-cooling.

Rated Power (automotive): 44.0 kW (59.5 hp) @ 3,000 rpm.
Power (continuous operation): 42.0 kW (56.3 hp) @ 3,000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 161 Nm (119 lb-ft) @ 1,800 rpm.
Fuel System: Direct injection with individual injection pumps for each
cylinder.
Injection Nozzle: Five-hole nozzle type.
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated.
Cooling System: Integrated oil cooling with external oil cooler.
The cylinder block is constructed from grey cast iron with a deep-skirt
design. This material provides the structural rigidity required for
continuous industrial operation at elevated cylinder pressures. The
crankcase is acoustically optimized to reduce operational noise.
The cylinder bores are integrally cast into the block with replaceable
or honed liners depending on the overhaul specification. The integrated
oil cooling system passages are cast into the block, directing oil to
the external cooler for heat dissipation.
Main bearing caps are manufactured from cast iron and are secured with
two bolts each. The main bearing structure incorporates reinforcing ribs
from the bearing bulkheads to the lower crankcase.
Crankshaft: Nodular cast iron, induction-hardened bearing surfaces,
fully counter-weighted. Connecting Rods: Drop-forged steel with machined
mating surfaces. Piston: Three-ring design consisting of two compression
rings and one oil scraper ring. Piston Cooling: Oil splash from
connecting rod bearings with additional cooling from the integrated oil
circulation system.
The cylinder head is a cast iron block-type head spanning all four
cylinders. This construction provides the thermal stability required for
air-cooled diesel operation. The valve train operates two valves per
cylinder (total 8 valves) in an overhead valve (OHV) configuration with
pushrods and rocker arms actuated by a camshaft located in the cylinder
block.
Valvetrain: OHV with pushrods and rocker arms, 2 valves per cylinder (1
intake, 1 exhaust). The camshaft is located in the cylinder block and
driven by gears from the crankshaft. Camshaft Drive: Gear-driven system
with steel timing gears. The crankshaft gear drives the camshaft gear
and the injection pump drive directly.
Valve Clearance (cold): Intake 0.30 mm (0.012 in); Exhaust 0.50 mm
(0.020 in).
Valve Seat Material: High-strength sintered alloy with
induction-hardened contact surfaces.
Valve Spring Material: High-tensile steel with conventional cylindrical
design.
Camshaft: Steel shaft running in bi-metal bearings.
The fuel system is a mechanical direct injection system with individual
injection pumps. Each cylinder has its own injection pump integrated
into the crankcase. Injection Pumps: Individual inline plunger pumps for
each cylinder, driven by the camshaft gear train. Governor: Mechanical
centrifugal governor integrated with the injection pump, providing speed
regulation under varying loads.
Fuel Injectors: Five-hole nozzle type.
Fuel Lift Pump: Serviceable pump with integrated strainer.
Fuel Filter: Paper-type microfilter as a replaceable-cartridge full flow
filter.
Fuel Requirement: Diesel fuel meeting ASTM D975 No. 1-D or No. 2-D.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed circulation system with a rotary
pump. The engine features an integrated oil cooling system where oil is
circulated through an external oil cooler for heat dissipation,
eliminating the need for liquid coolant.
Oil Pump Type: Rotary pump driven by the engine’s gear train.
Oil Cooler: External oil cooler integrated into the cooling circuit.
Recommended Oil Viscosity: SAE 10W-30, 15W-40 or synthetic as specified.
Oil Capacity: 11.5 L (12.2 qt) total system.
Oil Filter Type: Paper-type microfilter as replaceable-cartridge full
flow filter.
Crankcase Breather: Closed-circuit crankcase breather system.
The cooling system is an integrated oil cooling system, a distinctive
feature of the 1011 series. Engine cooling is accomplished by
circulating oil through an external oil cooler, rather than using a
separate liquid coolant system. The engine is supplied complete with the
oil cooler assembly.
Cooling Medium: Engine oil circulated through external oil cooler.
Cooling Fan: Engine-driven fan providing airflow across the oil cooler
and engine fins.
Thermostatic Control: Oil temperature regulation via bypass valve in the
cooling circuit.
Timing Drive: Gear-driven system with steel timing gears. The crankshaft
gear drives the camshaft gear, injection pump drive, and oil pump drive
directly.
Accessory Drive: Belt-driven system for the alternator and cooling fan;
front PTO options for additional equipment.
Starting System: 12V or 24V electric starter motor depending on
application.
Glow Plug System: Cold-start glow plugs in each cylinder for
pre-combustion chamber heating.
Governor: Mechanical centrifugal governor maintains stable engine speed
under varying load conditions.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with single outlet. All
service points are located on one engine side for accessibility.
