The Deutz F4L1011 is a 4-cycle naturally
aspirated inline 4-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine from the renowned
Deutz FL1011 family. Developed in the 1980s as the successor to the
F3L912 series, the F4L1011 was engineered to provide a compact,
high-power-density solution for off-highway machinery, agricultural
equipment, and construction vehicles. The “F” designation indicates a
naturally aspirated engine, while “L” stands for air-cooling. This
engine is celebrated for its exceptional reliability in extreme
temperatures and dusty environments, where liquid-cooled systems risk
freezing or radiator clogging.
The F4L1011 features an integrated oil cooling system combined with
finned cylinders and cylinder heads. Air is drawn across the engine by a
large axial fan, dissipating heat directly to the atmosphere. This
design eliminates the need for radiators, hoses, expansion tanks, and
coolant pumps, significantly reducing parasitic power loss and failure
points. The cylinder block is constructed from grey cast iron, housing a
nodular cast iron crankshaft supported by five main bearings. The
Bosch-type fuel injection system utilizes individual injection pumps for
each cylinder - a configuration that provides redundancy and
field-serviceability without specialized diagnostic tools.
The engine operates on a four-stroke diesel cycle with a naturally
aspirated induction method. It is configured for vertical installation
in industrial and agricultural machinery. Engine management is
mechanical, utilizing a centrifugal governor integrated into the
injection pump.
Engine Type: Inline 4-cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke diesel.
Displacement: 2.73 liters (167 cu.in).
Bore x Stroke: 91.0 mm x 105.0 mm (3.58 in x 4.13 in).
Compression Ratio: 18.5:1.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Idle Speed: 650 - 700 rpm (high idle governed).
Maximum Power (Intermittent): 44.0 kW (59.5 hp) @ 3,000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 161 Nm (119 lb-ft) @ 1,800 rpm.
Max. Permissible Inclination During Operation: 20 degrees in any
direction.
The crankcase and cylinder block are constructed as a single unit from
grey cast iron. The cylinders are integrally cast into the block
(siamese bores) without removable liners. The open-deck design on the
top surface provides access to the valves. The block features integral
cooling fins machined on the external surfaces to maximize heat
dissipation.
Cylinder Bore Diameter: 91.0 mm (3.58 in).
Main Bearing Journal Diameter: 70.0 mm (2.76 in).
Number of Main Bearings: 5.
Piston Material: High-temperature aluminum alloy.
Piston Rings: Three-ring piston: two compression rings and one oil
scraper ring.
Crankshaft Material: Nodular cast iron (GGG).
Connecting Rods: Drop-forged steel rod.
Crankcase Breather: Closed-circuit crankcase breather system.
Cylinder Block Construction: Grey cast iron monoblock with integral
cooling fins.
The cylinder head is constructed as a single block-type casting from
cast iron, covering all four cylinders. It houses one inlet and one
exhaust overhead valve per cylinder (8 valves total). The valves are
actuated via rocker arms, pushrods, and a camshaft located in the
crankcase. Valve seats are replaceable inserts made of heat-resistant
alloy. Valvetrain: OHV (Overhead Valve), gear-driven camshaft located in
the crankcase. 8 valves total (2 valves per cylinder: 1 intake, 1
exhaust).
Intake Valve Diameter: 36.0 mm (1.42 in).
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 32.0 mm (1.26 in).
Valve Seat Material: Heat-resistant alloy steel (replaceable).
Camshaft Drive: Helical gear train driven from the crankshaft front
gear.
The fuel system utilizes mechanical direct injection. Individual
single-plunger injection pumps are integrated into the crankcase for
each cylinder, delivering fuel to five-hole injection nozzles. This
configuration allows each cylinder to operate independently; failure of
one pump does not stop the engine. A mechanical centrifugal governor
regulates engine speed by controlling the fuel rack. A serviceable feed
pump with an integrated strainer supplies fuel from the tank.
Fuel Injector: Five-hole nozzle.
Injection Pump: In-line pumps (Bosch-type), one per cylinder, integrated
in crankcase.
Injection Pressure: 25.0 - 26.0 MPa (3,625 - 3,770 psi).
Governor Type: Mechanical centrifugal governor (all-speed).
Fuel Lift Pump: Serviceable diaphragm pump with integrated strainer.
Injection Timing: 20 degrees before top dead center (adjustable via
shims).
Fuel Requirement: Diesel fuel meeting EN 590 or equivalent, minimum
cetane rating 45.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed circulation system utilizing a
rotary oil pump. Oil is drawn from the sump and passed through a
replaceable-cartridge full-flow paper microfilter before being
distributed to the crankshaft, camshaft, and rocker assembly. The system
integrates oil cooling via a finned oil cooler housing mounted at the
front of the engine, which uses the engine’s cooling air flow to
dissipate heat.
Oil Pump Type: Rotary gear pump.
Recommended Oil Viscosity: 15W-40 (mineral) or 5W-40 (synthetic).
Oil Capacity (with filter change): 6.0 liters (6.3 qt).
Oil Pressure (at rated speed, warm): 300 - 500 kPa (43.5 - 72.5 psi).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on or cartridge full-flow paper microfilter.
Oil Pan Material: Stamped steel with deep sump.000000000000000000000
Intake System: The intake system incorporates a heavy-duty air cleaner
suitable for dusty industrial environments. The intake manifold
distributes air evenly to all four cylinders.
Timing System: The camshaft and injection pump drives are gear-driven
from the crankshaft, eliminating belt or chain replacement intervals.
Exhaust System: A single-piece cast iron exhaust manifold collects gases
from all four cylinders.
Engine Configuration: All service points - including oil filter, fuel
filter, and dipstick - are located on one engine side for simplified
maintenance access.
