The Deutz F3L1011F is a 2.05-liter,
inline-three, air-cooled diesel engine from the FL1011 family, produced
from the late 1980s through the early 2000s. This power unit was
engineered for industrial, agricultural, and construction equipment
where reliability in high-temperature environments and simplicity of
installation were prioritized over water-cooled alternatives. The
F3L1011F uses a cast iron block with a block-type cylinder head,
integrated oil cooling, and a forced-feed lubrication system with a
rotary pump.
The engine features individual injection pumps for each cylinder
integrated into the crankcase, a mechanical centrifugal governor, and
five-hole injection nozzles. The air-cooled design eliminates the
radiator, water pump, hoses, and coolant, reducing the number of failure
points in dusty or remote operating conditions. The F3L1011F was widely
installed in small wheel loaders, skid steer loaders, compaction
equipment, and generator sets requiring compact dimensions and high
reliability.
The Deutz F3L1011F is a four-stroke, air-cooled, inline-three diesel
engine with a total displacement of 2.05 L (125 cu.in). The bore and
stroke dimensions are 91 mm (3.58 in) and 105 mm (4.13 in),
respectively, creating an undersquare configuration that emphasizes
low-end torque production. The valvetrain employs an overhead valve
(OHV) design with one intake valve and one exhaust valve per cylinder
for a total of six valves. The camshaft is positioned within the
cylinder block and actuates the valves through pushrods and rocker arms.
Valve arrangement is one inlet and one exhaust overhead valve per
cylinder.
The combustion system uses direct injection with individual injection
pumps for each cylinder integrated into the crankcase. Induction is
naturally aspirated. Cooling is provided by forced air from an
engine-driven fan directed over finned cylinders and cylinder heads.
Integrated oil cooling supplements the air-cooling system.
The compression ratio is set at 18.5:1, a value providing reliable
cold-start performance and high thermal efficiency. Rated power is 33 kW
(44.5 hp) at 3,000 rpm. Maximum torque is 121 Nm (90 lb-ft) at 1,800
rpm. The engine speed range for continuous operation extends from idle
to the rated 3,000 rpm.
The crankcase is constructed from grey cast iron, a material selected
for its rigidity, wear resistance, and ability to dampen vibration. The
inline-three configuration incorporates four main bearings supporting a
nodular cast iron crankshaft. The connecting rods are drop-forged steel.
The crankshaft is dynamically balanced.
Cylinders are machined directly into the cast iron block without
removable liners. Each cylinder has cooling fins cast integrally with
the block, providing increased surface area for air cooling. A generous
fin depth and optimized spacing maximize heat dissipation. The
closed-circuit crankcase breather recirculates blow-by gases into the
intake system, reducing emissions. The crankcase breather is designed to
prevent oil carryover into the intake air stream.
Pistons are of the three-ring design: two compression rings and one oil
scraper ring (oil control ring). The piston crown incorporates a
re-entrant combustion bowl optimized for the direct injection system.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron as a single block-type
head covering all three cylinders. This block-type construction provides
uniform sealing across all cylinders and simplifies the valve actuation
system. The overhead valve (OHV) arrangement positions the camshaft
within the block, with valve actuation provided by pushrods and rocker
arms.
Valves are arranged with one intake valve and one exhaust valve per
cylinder. The cylinder head incorporates cast cooling fins identical to
the cylinder block, with forced air flowing over both components. Valve
seat inserts are pressed into the cylinder head. The valve springs are
of the single-coil type. The cylinder head gasket is a composite or
steel design, providing reliable sealing between the cast iron head and
cast iron block. Valve clearance is adjustable via set screws and
locknuts on the rocker arms.
The fuel system is a mechanical direct injection system utilizing
individual injection pumps for each cylinder integrated into the
crankcase. This design eliminates external high-pressure fuel lines
between the pump and injector for each cylinder. A mechanical
centrifugal governor maintains engine speed under varying loads,
automatically adjusting fuel delivery to hold the set speed. The
governor is designed for precise speed regulation in generator and
industrial applications.
A serviceable fuel lift pump incorporates an integrated strainer to
protect the injection pumps from contaminants. The fuel lift pump draws
fuel from the equipment-mounted tank through a primary filter. The
injection nozzles are of the five-hole type designed for direct
injection into the piston bowl. The five-hole nozzle provides a finely
atomized spray pattern for complete combustion.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed circulation system utilizing a
rotary pump. The pump draws engine oil through a strainer screen before
directing it through a paper-type microfilter as a replaceable-cartridge
full-flow filter. An oil pressure relief valve maintains system
pressure.
The main oil gallery distributes pressurized oil to the crankshaft main
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and rocker arm
assemblies. Integrated oil cooling is accomplished through an oil cooler
mounted in the cooling air stream, with engine oil circulating through
the cooler before returning to the engine.
The cooling system is forced-air cooling, eliminating the need for a
radiator, water pump, hoses, and coolant. An engine-driven fan mounted
to the front of the crankshaft draws air over the cylinder and cylinder
head cooling fins. A fan cowl directs airflow uniformly across all three
cylinders.
Integrated oil cooling supplements the air-cooling system, with an oil
cooler positioned in the fan airflow. The thermostat is absent in the
air-cooling system; operating temperature is controlled by the fan
airflow rate and oil cooling circuit. The air-cooled design provides
reliable operation in high ambient temperatures and dusty conditions
where water-cooled engines may overheat or suffer radiator clogging.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: The intake manifold is constructed from cast iron or
aluminum. The naturally aspirated induction system draws air through a
dry-type paper air filter with a primary and safety element. An intake
silencer reduces induction noise.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is constructed from cast iron, with
individual ports from each cylinder merging into a single outlet. The
exhaust system includes a muffler sized to the application.
The electrical system operates on 12 volts for most applications, with
24-volt systems available for construction equipment. A starter motor is
mounted to the flywheel housing. Glow plugs are installed in the
cylinder head for cold-start assistance, with glow duration controlled
by a manual switch or automatic timer.
Timing Drive: The camshaft and injection pumps are driven by a gear
train from the crankshaft. This gear drive system eliminates the need
for timing belt or chain replacements. The gear train is housed in a
cast aluminum front cover.
Governor System: The mechanical centrifugal governor is driven from the
camshaft gear train. Governor weights act on a control sleeve connected
to the injection pump rack. A spring-loaded control lever allows the
operator to set the desired engine speed, with the governor adjusting
fuel delivery to maintain that speed under varying loads.
The F3L1011F’s air-cooled, inline-three architecture provides a compact
package without the space requirements of a radiator. The overall length
is 519 mm (20.4 in). Width is 450 mm (17.7 in). Height is 678 mm (26.7
in). The dry weight is 160 kg (353 lb) for the base engine configuration
without accessories.
The F3L1011F requires regular maintenance aligned with industrial and
agricultural service intervals. The engine oil and filter must be
replaced after the first 50 hours of operation (break-in), then every
250 operating hours or annually. The oil capacity is 5.5 L (5.8 qt).
The fuel filter and fuel lift pump strainer require cleaning or
replacement every 250 operating hours. The air filter primary element
requires service when the restriction indicator shows elevated vacuum
levels; the safety element is replaced every third primary element
change.
Valve clearance adjustment is required at intervals of 500 operating
hours, with cold clearances specified in the service manual (typically
0.20 mm for intake and 0.25 mm for exhaust). The cooling fan belt
requires tension inspection every 250 hours and replacement as needed.
The oil cooler fins must be cleaned of debris at each service interval
to maintain cooling efficiency.
