The Volvo B4204T is a 2.0-liter turbocharged
inline-four gasoline engine belonging to the Volvo Modular engine family, known
colloquially as the "Whiteblock" series. Introduced in the late 1990s, this
power unit was developed to deliver a balance of performance and efficiency,
specifically targeting markets where displacement-based taxation made engines
over 2.0 liters financially prohibitive.
As a four-cylinder derivative of the renowned five-cylinder T5 engine found in
the Volvo 850 and V70, the B4204T incorporates the same advanced engineering
principles, including all-aluminum construction, double overhead camshafts, and
a low-pressure turbocharging system designed to provide responsive power
delivery across a broad rpm range.
The B4204T engine is a four-stroke, spark-ignition unit characterized by its
under-square bore-to-stroke ratio, which contributes to its torque-rich
character. The engine utilizes a low-pressure turbocharger to enhance volumetric
efficiency while maintaining a relatively high compression ratio for a
forced-induction engine of its era. The power output was calibrated to provide
seamless acceleration with minimal perceptible turbo lag, aligning with the
premium character of the vehicles in which it was installed.

The cylinder block is constructed from cast aluminum
alloy, a defining feature of the Modular engine family. This open-deck design
utilizes cast-in iron cylinder liners to provide a durable wear surface for the
piston rings. The block is of a deep-skirt configuration, extending below the
crankshaft centerline to enhance structural rigidity and reduce noise,
vibration, and harshness.
The crankshaft is manufactured from nodular cast iron and is supported by five
main bearings. The bearing caps are integrated into a robust ladder frame that
bolts to the block, reinforcing the lower end to manage the increased loads
associated with turbocharging. Piston cooling is achieved through oil jets
directed at the underside of the piston crowns to manage combustion temperatures
under boost.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast aluminum
alloy and features a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) arrangement. The DOHC
design enables a four-valve-per-cylinder configuration with a pent-roof
combustion chamber, optimizing flow characteristics for both naturally aspirated
and forced-induction operation.
The camshafts are driven by a toothed rubber timing belt from the crankshaft
sprocket. Valve actuation is managed by hydraulic lash adjusters in conjunction
with roller finger followers, eliminating the need for periodic valve clearance
adjustments and reducing friction in the valvetrain.
Valve Arrangement: 4 valves per cylinder (2 intake, 2 exhaust)
Valve Head Diameter (Intake): 32.0 mm (1.26 in)
Valve Head Diameter (Exhaust): 28.5 mm (1.12 in)
Valve Stem Diameter (Intake): 6.0 mm (0.24 in)
Valve Stem Diameter (Exhaust): 6.0 mm (0.24 in)
Camshaft Drive: Toothed timing belt
Valve Lifters: Hydraulic lash adjusters with roller finger followers
The fuel system employs sequential multi-point
electronic fuel injection managed by either a Siemens Fenix 5.1 or EMS 2000
engine control unit, depending on the vehicle application and market. A fuel
pump located within the fuel tank delivers fuel at a controlled pressure to the
fuel rail, which is mounted to the intake manifold. The fuel rail supplies four
individually controlled injectors that deliver fuel immediately upstream of the
intake valves.
The engine management system utilizes inputs from a mass airflow sensor,
throttle position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, and oxygen sensors to
calculate the precise fuel delivery required for all operating conditions,
enabling closed-loop fuel control for emissions compliance.
The lubrication system is a pressurized, wet-sump
design engineered to accommodate the thermal and mechanical demands of a
turbocharged engine. A gear-type oil pump, driven directly by the crankshaft,
circulates engine oil throughout the system. Oil is drawn from the aluminum oil
pan through a strainer-type pickup tube.
The system incorporates a full-flow oil filter with an integrated bypass valve.
A dedicated oil supply line routes pressurized oil to the turbocharger center
housing to lubricate and cool the rotating assembly. The oil cooler, integrated
into the oil filter housing, utilizes engine coolant to maintain stable oil
temperatures under sustained high-load conditions.
Oil Capacity (with filter): 5.8 L (6.1 qt).
Oil Capacity (without filter): 5.5 L (5.8 qt).
Recommended Oil Grade: SAE 5W-30 or SAE 10W-30 VCC 95200356 or ACEA A3/B3.
The cooling system is a sealed, pressurized system
engineered to manage the increased thermal load generated by turbocharging.
Coolant circulation is driven by a belt-driven water pump mounted to the front
of the cylinder block. A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant temperature by
controlling flow between the engine and the cross-flow radiator. The system
includes a plastic expansion tank with a pressure-rated cap to manage system
pressure and accommodate coolant expansion.
A dual-speed electric cooling fan, mounted to the radiator, provides forced
airflow during low-speed operation. The turbocharger is integrated into the
cooling system, with coolant circulating through the turbocharger center housing
to prevent localized overheating and coking of the lubricating oil after engine
shutdown.
Coolant Capacity (total system): 7.2 L (7.6 qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 90 °C (194 °F)
System Pressure Cap Rating: 140 kPa (1.4 bar; 20 psi)
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Features a plastic composite intake
manifold designed to reduce weight and minimize heat soak. The intake system
incorporates an intercooler mounted ahead of the radiator to reduce intake air
temperature after compression by the turbocharger.
Exhaust System: A cast iron exhaust manifold collects exhaust gases from the
cylinder head and directs them to the turbocharger. A heated oxygen sensor
mounted upstream of the catalytic converter provides feedback for closed-loop
fuel control.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
Ignition System: The engine employs a distributorless
ignition system with individual ignition coils for each cylinder. The
coil-on-plug configuration eliminates high-tension spark plug wires. The engine
control unit manages ignition timing based on engine speed, load, coolant
temperature, and knock sensor input. Spark Plug Gap: 0.70-0.80 mm (0.028-0.031
in).
Electrical System: 12-volt with a liquid-cooled alternator rated at 120 amperes.
Overall Length: 640 mm (25.2 in)
Overall Width: 620 mm (24.4 in)
Overall Height: 700 mm (27.6 in)

Valve Clearance: Hydraulic lash adjusters; no
adjustment required. Timing Belt Replacement Interval: 120,000 km (75,000 mi) or
8 years, whichever occurs first. This is an interference engine; timing belt
failure results in valve-to-piston contact. Engine Oil and Filter: Replacement
interval of 12 months or 15,000 km (9,300 mi) under normal conditions; reduced
intervals for severe service conditions including frequent turbocharger
operation.
